John George Haigh. No this speech isn’t about the English footballer who died at 101 years old. This is about a man who killed people then disposed of their bodies in barrels of acid. Yes, you heard me right, acid. In the reports it says that Haigh killed 6 people, but he told the police that it was 9. Because we have probably never heard of this man I will inform you about his time before the murders, the actual murders, his last victim, and then finally his trial.
CHANGE SLIDE
Before I start getting into the murderers, I am going to give you some information about his life. John George Haigh was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire on July 24th 1909. He had no siblings and was said to be lonely by the ones who knew him. His father built a 10 foot wall around their garden to keep the rest of the world out, so can you blame him for getting lonely? His family was also very religious so references to the Lord wasn’t unusual. He was always being reminded that there was a higher power watching over his

every move. His father had lied to him as a child and told him that if he sinned he would grow a blue blemish, marking that he had sinned. Later in life he realized no such thing would happen to him, so he thought he was invincible. That event was said to be a turning point in Haigh's psyche. In 1934 he stopped attending his parents church and got married to a 21 year old he barely knew. Her name was Beatrice Hammer, even though she was uncertain of his character since had became known as a manipulative and a compulsive liar, she married him anyway. I guess you could say she was really in love with him. Before he started his killings, he had been to jail multiple times for fraud. While in jail his “wife” gave birth to his daughter, which she gave up for adoption upon finding out they were not actually married because already had a wife. While in Jail Haigh kept thinking of ways to make money. He thought of multiple different ways other than fraud, but he settled on going after rich older women. Since he still believed he was somewhat invincible he figured he could get away with it. CHANGE SLIDE Now, moving on to 1944. Haigh had just got out of a 4 year sentence for fraud. And at the time actually believed that he couldn’t be convicted of murder if there wasn’t a body. At this point he knew what he wanted to do, but it wasn’t until September 6th when he put his plans into action. Haigh had ran into a former employer, William McSwan, he was with his parents and introduced haigh to them. On the night of September 6th, Haigh was able to lure McSwan into the basement of 79 Gloucester Road in Kensington, southwest London. There in the basement, he set up a little workshop that had all the tools he needed to do the job. John Haigh claimed that when he was in the basement he hit McSwan in the head with a hammer along with slit his throat. After killing Mr. McSwan he put his body in a 50 gallon drum then tipped sulphuric acid into it. A couple days later he figured out that it completely turned the evidence into sludge, so he disposed of it in a manhole. In order to fully get away with the murder, he told McSwan’s parents that he went into hiding so he didn’t have to serve in the war. With the war coming to an end McSwan’s parent got suspicious. So Haigh felt like he needed to kill them too. So he did in 1945. Haigh didn’t stop at the McSwan’s, he kept killing rich people since he had a thirst for money. He had a gambling problem, so whenever he would run low on money he would go out and kill a different couple. Another victim of his is Dr Archibald Henderson and his wife Rose. Before the murder Haigh was invited into their flat to play the piano for their housewarming party. At the party Haigh stole Henderson's revolver. He did the same thing with every victim. He lured them into whatever place he was renting and killed them there, then put them in the drums filled with sulphuric acid. CHANGE SLIDE These are the things he used and teeth found CHANGE SLIDE Haigh was doing great, he hadn’t been caught yet.
So he figured he murder another person to get the money he wanted. His last victim, Olive Durand-Deacon, was a wealthy widow who knew Haigh as an engineer and wanted to meet up to talk about a new idea she had for him. Haigh suggested they meet at Leopold Road workshop. Right as they got there Haigh shot her in the back of the neck, took all of her belongings then put her in the drum. John Haigh was doing great, he hadn’t been caught yet and nobody asked around about the people who had been murdered. But, on of Mrs. Deacons friends noticed she had been gone longer than normal. So they filed a missing person's report. Detectives soon discovered Haigh’s record of theft and fraud and searched the workshop. Police found Haigh’s attaché case containing a dry cleaner’s receipt for Mrs. Durand-Deacon’s coat, and also papers referring to the Hendersons and McSwans. They took him into questioning shortly after discovering these
things CHANGE SLIDE Now that Haigh had finally be caught he had to put on trial. Haigh was held in a cell at the Horsham Police Station until they were able to charge him. While being questioned before the trial he asked a police officer what the chancer were of him getting out of Broadmoor (psychiatric prison) He of course was charged with murder at the courthouse not too far from his holding cell. During the trial he pleaded insanity. Saying that as a young boy his dreams were mainly about blood, and that his insanity was caused by a car wreck he was in. After only 15 minutes of arguing his case the jury said he was guilty. He was sentenced to death. On the day of August 10th 1949 Haigh was hanged at the Wandsworth Prison. CHANGE SLIDE John George Haigh may have really been insane during the time of his murders. But we do know for sure that how he disposed of the bodies was pretty cool. While researching I was able to gather enough information to inform you about his early life, the murders, his last victim, and his trial. Now, since you know that you can still be convicted without a body, I suggest finding another way to dispose of a body.
The Army CID sent a new, inexperienced investigator named William Ivory to investigate the scene. Ivory decided after looking around the house that MacDonald made up the story of the killers. He also persuaded everyone that he was the culprit. This meant that everyone in Ivory’s chain...
General Colin Powell did the Commencement speech at Howard University on May 25, 1994. He did the speech after a cloud of controversy had happen at the university. A racist Black Muslim made a speech at Howard University. Howard policy is that anybody can express his or her freedom of speech on there campus. As you can figure out, the white community did not think of that very well. Connie Chung did a report saying that Howard University was a racist institution. All of this pressure was coming down at once. Howard said that they did not agree with the Black Muslims beliefs but will let them speak and express their opinions.

Be on the lookout for the two boys with the description of one that has long light-brown hair, green eyes, and is about five feet tall and another has long jet-black hair, large black eyes, and is about four feet six inches. The first one is considered to be Ponyboy and the second one is considered to be Johnny. The two are now on the run they were last seen at a party with Dally. Investigators report that Dally says he has no idea where these two are but he thinks that they are going to Mexico. A woman was taking a walk through the park and discovered the bloody corpse she said “I was hesitant at first because I thought they were watching me, but I gained some courage and called 911” the friends that were their helping Bob bully the 2 said they were there during the homicide, but decided not to call the police because they were drunk and they were scared after seeing him dead. They said, the murderer was a 16 year old boy named Johnny Cade.
How many Americans recognize the man on the back of the one hundred dollar bill? Do you know who he is and why he is on the back of that bill? If you said George Washington then you are right! It is said that when one begins something that others will follow behind you and in George Washington's case that is correct. George Washington paved the way for many other presidents that followed after him up until the one we currently have today. Without our first president we would not have our current president. George Washington made huge contributions and achievements to our country that still stand today.
“Climb on one’s back and stand on their shoulders to reach the top” this is what the Coronel Colin Powell hints to recent graduate from the Howard University in 1994. The Commencement Speech was long enough to motivate the graduating students. Also, it was proper and formal. When the speech began, Powell was exciting by ending on sharing his own experiences and giving great advices for those future professionals. Powell´s Commencement Speech demonstrates his interest by sharing his thoughts, and its language was uplifting and captivating. (502).
It’s early 1977, and New York is in a state of panic. For the past year, a serial killer has been prowling the streets. He owns no known name or face; the public cannot identify him. He could be someone’s next door neighbor or the guy that delivers their mail every morning. Maybe he’s the one who always complains about the barking dog down the street. Or maybe, just maybe, he’s all of the above. But for the state of New York, he’s simply known as the “.44 Caliber Killer,” named after his weapon of choice. Someone opens their newspaper that afternoon, they see the astonishing news: the killer has finally given himself a name in a letter written to police. The .44 Caliber Killer, whose true identity still will not be known by police for a couple more months, has declared that he shall be called the Son of Sam.
George Washington, the first president of the United States, had written a very important historical speech and document towards the end of his time in office. He had written the Farewell address which focused on helping America understand the importance of preserving unity, acknowledging the rise of political parties forming, strengthening religion and morality, and he stated his position on American foreign policy. He addressed these ideas with strong tone and used incredible amount of dictions that strengthens his tone as well as representing his appeal to ethos to a strong degree. However, today’s society seemed to forget Washington’s position on foreign policy and has created a new form of the policy. But nonetheless as time grew, change occurs. In today’s society Washington’s foreign policy would include many positive and negative manifestations, but it is still a speech and document that will always apply to America.
Millions of viewers tuned into the National Broadcasting Company television network for a special broadcast on the 27th of October. Viewers were anticipating Ronald Reagan’s “A Time for Choosing” speech. Reagan was acknowledged for his acting in motion pictures and television episodes since 1937, and was now being seen in an unfamiliar role. Reagan emerged in support of the Republican nominee Barry Goldwater. Barry Morris Goldwater was a businessman and five-term United States Senator from Arizona and the Republican Party's nominee for president in the 1964 election. “A Time for Choosing” was effective, because he gave personal examples to capture the audiences’ attention, and gave humor to a tough subject.
In 1987, the President of the United States at the time was Ronald Reagan. Everyone has their differing opinions when it comes to judging the quality of the job a President has done. There are many factors that cause biased opinions. Some of these include your political party affiliation, your viewpoint on the social matters that were going on at the time, and your economic standing. Despite all these varying viewpoints, people can agree upon one thing when it comes to Ronald Reagan. That one thing is that in 1987, when turmoil due to post-war political issues split Germany into two sides, Reagan made a speech that is known as “The Speech at Brandenburg Gate” that altered the course of history. His exalted rhetoric was highly touted at the
The central idea of Reagan's Speech for the Challenger incident was that all the people in the space program like the Challengers are brave, dedicated, good, admirable people, serving and helping us advance to the future. The Challengers that died, had great courage to go on the spaceship knowing all the possible dangers,as Reagan put it, “ And perhaps we’ve forgotten the courage it took for the crew of the shuttle… But we feel the loss, and we’re thinking about you so very much. Your loved ones were daring, brave and they had that special grace, the special spirit that says, ‘ Give me a challenge, and I’ll meet it with joy… They wished to serve and they did. They served all of us” ( Reagan 1). This uses all the positive/good connotations and
On January 28th, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded upon takeoff murdering seven astronauts in it. The NASA space shuttle Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986, only 75 seconds after liftoff, conveying an overwhelming end to the spacecraft's tenth mission. The disaster killed each of the seven astronauts aboard, including Christa McAuliffe, a teacher from New Hampshire who would have been the main non military personnel in space (Howell). It was later confirmed that two elastic O-rings, which had been designed to isolate the sections of the rocket booster, had flopped because of cold temperatures on the morning of the launch. The catastrophe and its aftermath got broad media coverage and prompted NASA to temporarily suspend all shuttle
For three hours and a half in a courtroom at Boise, Ohio, Harry Orchard assembled in the witness chair at the Haywood trial and recounted a record of offenses, slaughter, and murder… the like of which no individual in the overcrowded courtroom had ever thought of. Not in the entire scope of "Bloody Gulch" literature will there be exposed anything that approaches an equivalent to the atrocious narrative so motionlessly, coolly, and composedly voiced by this audacious, disimpassioned man-slaughterer.
In the end we find out that John had not raped and killed the two little girls he was found with, but instead he had happened upon them and tried to bring them back to life; only it was too late. Seeing the fantastical nature of the situation the guards who knew the truth were unable to free John of the charges he was facing and they had to kill him anyways.
As you may have noticed, his article started with murderers Robert Lee Willie and Joseph Carl Shaw who both were about to be killed from the death penalty. Both, were pleading for their lives as in hopes
When attempting to explain the conditions Myers' lives in, straightforward, realistic statements are usually the most effective way to do so. "Near my house in the 1990s we had drive-by killings, run-by killings, sneak-up killings, gunfights and battles, car chases. We had drug killings, vengeance killings, the killing of witnesses to other crimes, accidental killings, and killings that enforce values we can only vaguely fathom" (73). Myers' illustrates the violence he sees on a daily basis, which allows someone like myself, who comes from a small suburban town and is not familiar with killings of any sort, to better understand the nature of the violence he is describing. It is a very bold statement that sets the tone of the essay, for this type of violence is common to Myers and is something he has become accustomed to. For those of us who are lucky enough to live in areas sheltered from violence and death, there is a need for outside sources to make us aware of the condition of the world around us.
