Women-The Object of Your Eye In 1972, John Berger, author of The Ways of Seeing, constructed the idea that men were objectifying women in a majority of old European oil paintings. According to Berger, when men started observing women like this, so did the women. Berger states that “men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at. This determines not only most relations between man and woman but also the relation of women to themselves” (47). This means that even though men objectify women, most women also objectify themselves. Even though this argument was made in 1972, it is still very valid in 2015. An ad for Skyy Vodka shows a woman lying down and she is wearing revealing clothing. You can see the woman’s face but the main focus of the woman is her breast. A man is standing above her, wearing a nice suit, and he is holding a bottle of Skyy Vodka and two glasses. The man’s face is not shown, but you can see him from the waist down. This ad shows that a man’s presence says more than a woman’s does and this hasn’t changed since Berger argued that “by contrast, a woman’s presence expresses her own attitude to herself, and defines what can and cannot be done to her. Her presence is manifest in her gestures, voice, opinions, expressions, clothes, chosen surroundings, taste-indeed there is nothing she can do which does not contribute to her presence” (46). In most ads, the woman is barely wearing any clothing. If she is wearing some sort of clothing, it is very revealing. This makes people tend to judge women on what they look like and what they think they can do for them, instead of what women can do for society or the ideas they have. People also think that if they buy the object that is being sold in the ad, then they might get a woman’s attention. They also think when they buy the object, then they might get a woman’s attention. When they buy the object, they think about what the woman in the ad can do for them, not what the object can do for them. The way the world, men and women, objectify women is unbelievable. A woman’s face can be covered up, she can be turned into the object being sold, or she can just be a pair of legs. A woman is never supposed to be seen as an object, but in these ads she is. These ads are a good representation of how our society thinks and acts today. Rosewarne reveals that “In both a workplace and a public space setting audiences are held captive to such images; and both sets of images work to masculinise space in a way that makes women feel excluded” (Rosewarne 314). Take beer advertisements as an example of this. Beer advertisements have been utilizing the female body to draw the interest of males for centuries. This materialization of women has been verified to not only have a discouraging effect on women, but an unfavorable effect on civilization. The documentary Killing Us Softly 4 discusses and examines the role of women in advertisements and the effects of the ads throughout history. The film begins by inspecting a variety of old ads. The speaker, Jean Kilbourne, then discusses and dissects each ad describing the messages of the advertisements and the subliminal meanings they evoke. In Susan Bordo’s “Beauty (Re)discover The Male Body, she uses advertisement as a form of her argument on how we observe images through the views of the female and male body in advertisement. Also, the many assumption we come across in Bordo’s argument is how the female and male body is objectified in a sexual content in advertisement that has an effect on how we view the portrayed images. In this essay I’ll be exploring various concepts of women and will deeply criticise the way women are seen and portrayed through advertising. My primary resource I’ll be referring to throughout this essay is a book called ‘Ways of seeing’ by John Berger, which highlights the role women during the early renaissance and onwards. In addition to this I will explore the various beliefs of women from a wide range of secondary resources, and will include references from books, websites, and various images to help clarify my statements.
While societies change and old forms of patriarchy corrode, new ones concentrate and develop (Bartky 94). A woman’s feminity is no longer restricted to certain forms of disciplinary practices such as her dressing and her smile. However, the center of attention in today’s modern society is a female’s body and its appearance. Bartky argues that when this anonymous power controls a woman about how she should feel about her body, oversees everything she does and directs her to change what is not good enough, she immediately becomes objectified (Bartky, 94). In the essay “Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body,” author and philosopher Susan Bordo discusses the history and current state of male representation in advertisements. While using her feminist background, Bordo compares and contrasts the aspects of how men and women are portrayed in the public eye. She claims that there has been a paradigm shift the media with the theory that not just women are being objectified in the public eye, but also men too. Since the mid-1970s, with the introduction of Calvin Klein commercials, men have started to become more dehumanized and regarded as sex symbols. In a similar fashion to how Bordo describes gender, race plays a similar role in the media. People of all different ethnicities and cultures are being categorized into an oversimplified and usually unfair image by the media over basic characteristics.

The average American is exposed to hundreds of advertisements per day. Advertisements targeted toward females have an enormous effect on women's thoughts, attitudes, perceptions, and actions. Most of the time, women don't even realize these advertisements are formulating self-image issues. These ideals surround them daily and they become naturalized to the ads. Advertising creates an entire worldview persuading women to emulate the images they see all around them.
