In contrast to this small town were the advancing views of America. The twenties continued to roar towards modernism. “Breakthroughs in technology, the increase in material wealth, and the beginning of an empire seemingly heralded the upward march of civilization, with America on the forefront” (Dumenil 6). In all directions, it was clear that America was moving forward. Transportation was a prime example of this advancement. Innovator Henry Ford introduced his “ Ford Miracle” to the public (Dumenil 6). Economies and the social values also began to advance. “Dubious get-rich-quick schemes and fads…contributed to a tone of feverish frivolity” (Dumenil 7). People began to lead fast paced lives with the desire to become rich, quickly.

Henry Ford, the man who revolutionized the car industry forever, founded his company under the beliefs that a car wasn’t a high-speed toy for the rich but instead a sturdy vehicle for everyday family needs, like driving to work, getting groceries or driving to church. However, Henry ford did much more than just this feat. He also tried to make peace in WWI before America had joined the war. In addition, Ford made the radical new five dollars a day payment. However, Ford also had his lows. At an early age, his mother died. His first two companies had also been failures. Against many of his closest friends protests, he published an anti-semitic (Jewish) newspaper. Ford had a very interesting and unique life and he changed the automotive industry forever.

John Lewis states that the country needs new laws to be put in place. Lewis uses an anaphora “We need a bill” that portrays his mistrust and doubts towards the way the legislation is run at the time. Lewis immediately states a wrong that the legislation has made when he states “We must have legislation that will protect the Mississippi sharecropper who is put off of his farm because he dares to register to vote.” (para 4). The statement describes an example of how the laws that are set in place have no real intention of protecting the people of color in any way, shape or form. The phrase portrays why the people of color have been marching in the first place, the government has no intention to help them with the horrible conditions they have
