Throughout the story Hills like White Elephants the charter referred to as the American displayed many traits from only the dialogue between himself and the charterer name Jig. The American acted was self-centered and could be considered controlling of the girl, Jig. In the begging of the story the American first seems to skip over the main reason of why they are in the Train Terminal in the first place, the couple is going to get an abortion, however once the topic ix brought up the American is trying to convince the girl, Jig, that she is really oversimplifying the issue and that her operation would be the equivalent of getting a cut disinfected. The American Man says things such as “it’s the only thing that bothers us” and “it’s the only thing that makes us unhappy”, the American Man is trying to get Jig to only see his way of thinking. The American Man wants Jig to get an operation, however, Jig is not on board with his decision so throughout the story the American Man is consistently trying to get Jig to agree with his point of view. Jig unlike her counterpart she does not voice her opinion so loudly and freely but instead she keeps it to herself for most of the story. Somehow near the middle of the story Jig seems to come to a realization that even if she has the operation things will not return to the way they were, that’s why she say that they can’t have the world because even if she didn’t or did go through with the operations things would never return to the relationship they once had. Once Jig came to that realization she had a whole new perspective on her situation and a new attitude to go with it. Jig had went through being “a naïve girl” whose only wish was to please the American man and for things to be the way they once were to a strong women who now knows how to make choices to better
