This case involves a sophomore at a high school named Christine Franklin, who alleged that she was sexually harassed and abused by a teacher and sports coach by the name of Andrew Hill. These allegations were occurring from 1986-1988, a total of two years. These allegations included Hill having explicit conversations with Franklin, forcing her to kiss him, and forceful intercourse on school grounds. Franklin claimed that she let teachers and administrators know about the harassment and that other students were going through the same harassment. The primary responsibility of student discipline falls on the school officials. Disciplining students helps with keeping order in the school, and the main reason for discipline is to keep the safety of entities of the school. However, discipline can be hard when the issues happen outside school grounds, especially for issues that occur through social media platforms, also known as off-campus speech. Off-campus speech is very tricky to deal with, and as school personnel, we need to make sure we do not take action based on students’ opinions until we know the facts and the law behind our actions.
We, all, have the opportunity to voice our opinion on subjects that matter to us. The First Amendment grants us freedom of speech and expression. However, this was not provided to all students in 1968. During this time, there were three students in Des Moines, Iowa, who wore black armbands to school. These armbands were a symbol of protest against the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. After the Des Moines School District heard about this plan, they instituted a policy banning the wearing of armbands, leading to the suspension of students. A lawsuit has been filed against the Des Moines School District, stating how this principal goes against the students’ First Amendment rights. Thus, in the Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District case, Justice Abe Fortes determined the policy to ban armbands is against the students’ First Amendment rights. Yet, Justice Hugo Black dissented with this decision, determining the principal is permissible under the First Amendment.
The author states in “A New Deal for Teachers” that in America, especially in poorer school districts, teacher quality is lacking. In urban districts, out of the new teachers hired in the next three years, about half of them will quit (usually the quality ones). The recruitment of better teachers is, as the author says, the biggest problem in our education system. He states that he’s been told by urban teachers that many of their colleagues are incompetent. An outdated education system is the largest problem Michigan faces because it affects not only the present, but also the future of the state. Important issues cannot be solved, nor policies created to remedy them, if the people attempting to solve them are not equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to make informed decisions. The state cannot run itself, let alone the nation as a whole, if its’ people are uneducated. The Constitution, the very basis of our government, relies heavily on the assumption that citizens of the United States are able to make knowledgeable and well-reasoned decisions, the types of which cannot be made when a person does not receive a proper education. This proper education is unattainable when low educational funding occurs. Lowering educational funding leads to lower standardized test scores, lack of resources, and an overall poorer education (Roy 2003). Even with these results educational funding has consistently been put upon the chopping block at all levels of government. Governor Rick Snyder’s budget cuts $470 per pupil for the 2012 fiscal year, while promising only small incentives to be added when re-balancing the budget in 2013 (Resmovits 2012). Snyder’s cuts in education stand in sharp contrast to the budget and policy passed in 1994, by then Governor John Engler. Engler, along with the House and Senate, created Proposal A. This policy increased funding to all levels of education, reduced the large funding gap between poorer and richer school districts, and opened schools of choice. Many individuals have been affected negatively by trouble makers in school. Troublemakers have either disrupted classes or bullied other students. Yes, trouble makers may harm one’s learning environment, but should they be kicked out of school? Though many individuals argue that troublemakers will not change and hold the class down, they should not be kicked out because they need help. Most of these kids that are disobedient do not know the distinction between right and wrong. We should not withdraw trouble makers from school, rather, we should help these troublemakers and teach them right from wrong. In the article “Let’s Really Reform Our Schools” by Anita Garland, she states that American high schools are disasters because there are troublemakers (694). According to Jerry Rosenfeld, American schooling is failing minority students in widespread proportions. In his ethnographic book “Shut Those Thick Lips!” (1971), African American students arrive at a Harlem school with deficient baseline skills, resulting in less than optimal academic outcomes. The predominantly white teaching staff accepts these deficiencies as a consequence of “cultural poverty,” whereby the minority culture itself is lacking and wanting for successful integration into the larger society. By excepting the culture as impoverished, teachers shift responsibility for such common minority failure directly onto the students.

After watching a documentary on Netflix called, “ The Hunting Ground” it explored on the sexual assaults on campuses, but college officials tends to cover up the crimes. Usually, the person who sexual assaults you is from somebody that you know, a person who may have classes with, or somebody you just met. More than 16% of college women are sexually assaulted while in college. 88% of women sexually assaulted on campus do not report. College officials tend to cover up the crimes because they do not want the college to have a bad reputation, so they don’t help the individuals who were sexually assaulted and let the perpetrator be set free. Which these perpetrator repeat their crimes.

As an educator in Florida one is expected and required to follow all the codes and principles. To be sure to not get into trouble an educator must follow the all the Principles of Professional conduct for the Education Profession. There are many obligations involved, ones to the students, ones to the public, and ones to the profession. By breaking those rules one can have their educator’s certification revoked and not be permitted to teach in Florida or they could also be punished by the law enforcement (1).

Beginning with the Grammar schools, the Massachusetts School Law of 1647 established the tradition of more formal schooling within each town. Albeit often times neglected, it required towns to publicly form and fund elementary schools. Pedagogia qualifications around this time included high moral standards, political fidelity; swear allegiance to the crown, single men for economic reasons, etc. An act of acculturation occurred within the 1600s and 1700s, placing Native American children within boarding schools away from their tribes to divest them of any traditions they might have. January 1794, Congress assembled in replication of war threats with Great Britain and Spain. The entire republican process seemed to be vulnerably susceptible; America needed to stand cumulated against foreign conspiracies. The bellwethers turned to edification to develop a national identity. Political indoctrination had to coexist with political liberation. Children were edified utilitarianism, betokening that the moral worth of an action is resolute by its outcome: put simply, the cessations justify the expedient. Obligation, accolade, and noble comportment composed the habits of virtue, that is, a sense of civility. The regime would fortify inculcation, whether central or state. Application of a code of ethics helps us to guarantee that members of the profession will be accountable for their actions. It helps us to learn about the responsibility we have for ourselves, our colleagues and to the social structure of the profession. It is essential that the present and future psychologist should be aware of the formal ethical codes of practices in psychology. The American Psychological Association (APA) developed this formal Ethics Code which demonstrates the approaches to the psychologist about logical, educational, and clinical behaviors to be followed while working as a licensed person. By applying the ethical code a psychologist can identify ethical issues, interrelate with others professionally. This can inhibit and solve ethical dilemmas, and he /she will be able achieve their professional protagonists and responsibilities.
