The Scandal at Penn State, lead to the arrests of Jerry Sandusky a defensive coordinator for the University. A grand jury on November 4, 2011, stated that for 15 years Mr. Sandusky sexually abused eight young boys. During that time frame, the official at the university deliberately failed to notify law enforcement of these incidents. Within a matter of a month, the number of victims begins to increase up to a total of 10. Within a year, Mr. Sandusky was found guilty in 2012. During his career at Penn State, he establishes a group home for troubled boys, which eventually became a non-profit organization known as The Second Mile. His purpose was to inspire young trouble boys to tap into their potential and achieve (2017). He captured the trust
This case involves a sophomore at a high school named Christine Franklin, who alleged that she was sexually harassed and abused by a teacher and sports coach by the name of Andrew Hill. These allegations were occurring from 1986-1988, a total of two years. These allegations included Hill having explicit conversations with Franklin, forcing her to kiss him, and forceful intercourse on school grounds. Franklin claimed that she let teachers and administrators know about the harassment and that other students were going through the same harassment. The result of telling the teachers and administrators was that nothing was done about the situation and even encouraged Franklin not

One of the most shocking cases involving victims of crime failed by the criminal justice system is the Jimmy Savile scandal that was uncovered in 2012, a year after his death. Jimmy Saville was renown as a famous television, DJ and radio personality and a highly respected man for his charity work within the UK. Nevertheless, he was also one of the UK’s most famous sexual predators and paedophiles who had many victims. His victims included women as well as up to 1,000 young girls and boys, the age range of victims were as low as 5 all the way up to 75, over a 50-year period. He led this lifestyle by abusing his power, and taking advantage of his celebrity status, to feed his
When Mike McQueary witnessed the rape of a 10-year-old boy, he did not report it to the cops nor did he try and resolve the issue himself (Szalavitz). Instead of using common sense, Mr.McQueary’s mind might have shifted the situation into “interpretive” denial, causing the brain to portray the situation in a different way and with a different meaning behind it (Szalavitz). Sadly, Mr.Queary wasn’t the only one who chose to ignore Jerry Sandusky’s unforgivable actions. A janitor, who was working at Penn State, also failed to report another assault of a child, allowing for endangerment of the kid. Although the charging of Jerry Sandusky is recent, there is an infamous Bystander Effect case that will bring shivers down anyone’s spine. Whenever
Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, Michigan State University and the FBI are questioning whether or not more could have been done to stop Nassar and are investigating to try and find answers to these questions. More than 200 victims gave statements for Dr. Larry Nassar. Many of these include Mattie Larson, Megan Ginter, Jordyn Wieber, Jessica Smith, and a very empowering speech from Aly Raisman. They all say that they reported Nassar's actions as far back as 1997, but they were ignored because they were only “little girls”. The Judge of the case speaks for the minds of everyone when she said that it is unbelievable that so many people got hurt, and it all could have been stopped if we had just listened when they first spoke up. But now Nassar is getting the karma he deserves and is sentenced to 40-175 years in prison for molesting the young gymnasts and another 60 years for possession of child pornograpahy. Nassar was able to conduct these invasive medical exams at Twistars gym where cruel, harsh, and abusive coaches were normal, making it easy for Nassar t continue the molestation of girls. Many people had something to say about Nassar’s actions, saying that he committed depraved acts of penetration and enjoyed it, and how his side of the story was believed over the childrens for so many years causing all the
Due to the minimum of 30 years and maximum of 60 years imprisonment, it was determined Sandusky would spend his life behind bars (CNN, 2013). There were at least seven victims to come forward in a civil suit against the university in 2013 (CNN, 2013). The amount of the civil suit as undisclosed; however, in October of 2013 at least 25 other victims came forward with allegations against Sandusky with hopes to obtain compensation (Ley, 2016). The civil suit was due to the actions of Sandusky and could cost the university up to 60 million dollars. A United States (U.S.) district judge ruled the university was not legally responsible for the actions of Sandusky (Ley, 2016). Although he was employed by the university, his molestation acts occurred while under the presumption of the Second Mile program. The university interacted and communicated directly with victims to settle with them. Penn State officials failed to report the accounts of abuse to law enforcement and were unable to protect other minors from sexual advances of
The mistrust most Americans feel toward the government officials and political parities of today can be traced back to the Watergate scandal of 1972, which led to the resignation of an American president. The crimes of the Watergate scandal included political burglary, bribery, extortion, wiretapping (phone tapping), conspiracy, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, tax fraud, illegal use of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), illegal campaign contributions, and use of taxpayers' money for private purposes.
THE WATERGATE SCANDAL Watergate is a hotel in Washington D.C. where the Democratic National Committee held their campaign headquarters. The current president at the time was Richard M. Nixon, who was involved in the scandal himself and which lead to the cause of his resignation. The Watergate scandal should not have happened, but it did and it caused the American people to judge less of their government system. The scandal began on June 17, 1972, with the arrest of five men who were caught in the offices of the Democrat’s campaign headquarters. Their arrest uncovered a White House sponsored plan of espionage against the political opponents and a trail of intrigue that led to some of the highest officials in the land. The officials involved in the Watergate scandal were former U.S. Attorney General John Mitchell, White House Counsel John Dean, White House Chief of Staff H.R. Haldman, White House Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs John Ehrlichman, and President Nixon. On April 30, 1973, nearly one year after a grand jury investigation of the burglary and arrest of the people involved, President Nixon accepted the resignation of Haldeman and Ehrlichman and announced the dismissal of John Dean. Furthermore, U.S. Attorney General Richard Kleindienst resigned as well shifting the position to the new attorney general, Elliot Richardson. However, Elliot Richardson decided to put Harvard Law School professor Archibald Cox in charge of conducting a full-scale investigation of the Watergate break-in. Hearings were opened in May of 1973 by the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Activities with Senator Sam Ervin of North Carolina as the chairman. Suddenly, a series of startling revelations began as Dean testified that Mitchell had ordered the break-in and that a major attempt was under way to hide White House involvement. Dean also claimed that President Nixon had authorized payments to the burglars to keep them quiet. The Nixon administration denied any involvement in the scandal, but the testimony of White House aide Alexander Butterfield exposed Nixon and unlocked the entire investigation. On July 16, 1973, Butterfield told the committee, on nationwide television, that President Nixon had ordered a taping system to be installed in the White House to automatically record all conversations. With this what Nixon had said and when he had said it was on the t...
In the first four years approximately 118 cases were based on an abuser calling to tell their story about being abused. (Tabachnick, 1997). Prior to this program they were no reports of disclosure of child sexual abuse in Vermont. (Tabachnick,

The John Jay College of Criminal Justice found that 4% of all priests who had served in the US from 1950 to 2002 had allegations of child sexual abuse made against them (John Jay College, 2004; Terry, 2008). Most victims were male and older in age compared to victims in the general population (Terry and Ackerman, 2008).The John Jay College study of child sexual abuse in the US Catholic Church found that 81% of the victims of abuse were male. Richard Sipe, a leading expert on sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, reported that of the priests with a tendency to abuse young children, about three-quarters had a preference for abusing boys. The gender preference was more equal among the group of priests who targeted adolescents (Sipe, 1995: 27). Rossetti, (1995) reported on the results of a questionnaire that was sent to more than 7000 adults. Of the 25% that responded, most of the people who completed the questionnaire were either priests, nuns or actively involved in the Catholic Church. 3.3% of the men said that they had been sexually abused by a priest before the age of 18, and 1.7% of the women reported being a...
The prevalence of pedophiles, or those attracted to young children, is believed to be roughly 5% of the U.S. population (Seto, 2009). The relationships formed with children by these pedophilic individuals may seem beneficial to the perpetrators; however, the young victims are scarred for life. Abused children face short and long-term problems including anxiety, fear, anger, depression, shame, and poor self-esteem (Murray, 2000). The best way for society to counteract these detrimental side affects is to tackle the offenders. However, current treatments for pedophilia have been far from helpful, some of which include psychotherapy, behavior therapy, surgery, and medication (Berlin & Krout, 1994; Repique, 1999). While some of these treatments are effective, they are also unethical. In addition, of those that can be used, very few keep the recidivism rates down. Booxbaum and Burton (2013) discovered that only 70% of participants had attempted to stop, decrease, or slow down their sexual abuse towards children and only 56% of those individuals were able to stop temporarily. However, if the origin of pedophilia is correctly identified, treatments can be refined in order for them to be more effective rather than focusing on changing sexual preferences (Seto, 2012). To begin truly understanding the etiology of pedophilia, the characteristics of this first must be addressed.
While the effects of Watergate had far-reaching consequences for journalism, not everything to come out of the scandal came to be positive. As a result of the Watergate scandal many journalists try to find a Watergate like story even where there is none, Monicagate is a perfect example. In addition, many critics of the media argue since Watergate many people have become disenfranchised with Media's constant negativity. Another result of Watergate is the use of the media as a tool for political sabotage. Finally, the media of today bombards the average person with so much news everyday it becomes hard for one to decipher what is actual news and what is just a heap of garbage.
Political controversy has become increasingly interesting to me within the past few years. Choosing a fairly recent topic that I would be able to talk about with my parents, as well as my teachers was also extremely important to me. I came across a decrepit encyclopedia in the back of my family’s bookshelf and skimmed through it, looking especially for major events that affected the public immensely. While narrowing down my topic choices, I determined the Watergate Scandal would be a great choice for me because of my interest in politics, and the complexity of the subject would allow me to explore different paths to focus on.
