This idea is expressed prominently in John Foulcher’s For the Fire and Loch Ard Gorge. For the Fire entails a journey of someone collecting kindling as they witness a kookaburra kill a lizard, Foulcher represents his idea through the use of metaphor, “a kookaburra hacks with its axe-blade beak.” This metaphor represents the beak in weaponised form, as it is compared with a violent axe. This evokes a sense of threat and intimidation towards the kookaburra, which contrasts to societies general interpretation of the ‘laughing kookaburra,’ thereby challenging the reader's perceptions of beauty in the natural world. Also, this comparison of the kookaburra offers a second understanding for the readers to interpret of the kookaburra. Similarly, in Loch Ard Gorge, Foulcher uses strong visual imagery, “savage dark fish are tearing their prey apart, blood phrasing the water decked with light,” to communicate the violence of the ‘savage’ fish to readers in a visual, gruesome manner. Thereby evoking a feeling of disgust towards the situation, as a visual description of blood is shown and Foulcher uses provoking, gruesome adjectives to communicate the fish's brutality. Foulcher expresses these ideas to communicate the abilities of nature, and provide a necessary ‘reality check’ for the readers, to review the beauty they see nature and understand the barbarity at the heart of everything. Even though it is most commonly known as of the first modern horror films that has made its way on the top ten highest grossing films of all time, Steven Spielberg’s classic 1975 film, Jaws, illustrates the unquenchable human desire for purpose and wholeness which advocates that adopting the belief of “anatta” or “no-self” is the way to be liberated from this “fragmented state of unelightenment” (Sluyter 97-98). In the bigger picture, the main antagonist of the film, the shark itself, reflects us as individuals according to Sluyter. Jackson’s concept of the ‘known’, the ‘unknown’ and the ‘longing for an absolute meaning’ was expressed in the story by the Creature’s character. The Creature is like a human being because he talks like a human and acts like a human even though his looks is different from a real human being. For this reason, the Creature seems to be real, so I was able to suspend my disbelief and think that the Creature is real while reading the story. The Creature looks like half man and half fish, so maybe that is the reason why some people call him “Fish Man”. However, according to him, “he’s not a fish, but an amphibian” (Bailey). It is unknown if he really is an amphibian, and “he’d never known another of his kind” (Bailey). The unknowns in the story caused me to immerse myself more. As I read, I was looking forward to find out more information about the Creature. I wanted to know where did he come from, and I was hoping to find a happy ending for him. Thus, I think I was able to feel what the author wants the readers to feel. Through the whole story, the Creature was searching for happiness, and I too, as the reader, was looking for something or someone that will help improve the Creature’s life after all the wrongs he had suffered. One of the Creature’s co-actors, Karloff, gave him an advice and said, “Underwater, my friend. Water is your natural milieu” (Bailey). I think this message is the absolute meaning that the Creature was looking for, and as a result, he finally knew where he can find happiness. “The Creature strikes off for home, knowing now how fleeting are the heart’s desires, knowing that Julie too would ebb into memory” (Bailey). Jaws created fear in adults and in children, and were fearful of ever going to the beach again. McCarthy uses detailed descriptions, creates a somber mood through religious references, and elucidates upon the main character’s perspective to convey the impact of the experience on the protagonist. His actions reveal significant care and respect for the animal, as it seems difficult for the protagonist to cope with the loss of such a great creature. McCarthy portrays the wolf through an uncommon perspective; a frightful and beastly creature is transformed into a magnificent and bold animal. The wolf is pictured as an animal destined for honor and high admiration through its spiritual characteristics. Emphasis on the wolf’s positive qualities reveals human beings’ tendency to ignore the favorable characteristics of an individual or animal. A fisherman sits in his boat on the open sea, alone save for the fish below the water’s surface. The calmness of the ocean is disrupted by something underneath, something big. Fear seeps through the fisherman’s heart as he sees the shiny gray dorsal fin pierce the sun-glinted surface of the ocean. The creature stops its ritual and pulls its head out of the water, revealing the face of a great white: scars from countless battles in the ocean’s depths, a mouth full of lethal daggers, and dark, savage eyes.

They can be sounds that the character cannot hear or interact with but instead affect the viewer. First, I will intend to take you on a brief journey through the horror genre and the conventions that have been associated. Second I will show you how these conventions are used in the film Jaws. Let’s take a closer look at the history of the horror genre. To get started we are going to start with the first era or as it’s called the silent era. This era was based on monsters such as Frankenstein (1910), Dracula (1912) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923). The horror was all about the make up and the clever use of lighting, to add thrills.
In a crucial scene in Jaws, chief Martin Brody must use his mistake as guide for to him complete his goal of saving the town from the antagonistic shark. After catching a tiger shark, the local town fishermen all celebrate their victory together with Brody and the mayor believing they have solved Amity Island’s problem. Soon the mother of the deceased child who was killed by the great shark appears on the boardwalk. Her costume, a solid black dress appropriate for a funeral, contrasts with the bright sunny day on the beach that is represented with high-key lighting. The dress also symbolizes the mother’s multiple feelings of mourning for her child and her anger towards Brody, which again juxtaposes the feelings of success among Brody and the fishermen. It may be set 4th of July because is their independence day or their freedom from Great Britain. It may be set on the 4th of July because this day is very important or significant for the whole of America. It is celebrated around the whole of America in various ways to celebrate the American tradition. This also creates tension because if people get killed on this day or maybe Christmas it has a greater effect because often people are unaware or not expecting something like this to happen on a day like that.
Throughout “The Shark” by EJ Pratt, the poet places a lot of effective diction such as “leisurely”, “stirred”, “snapped”, “flash”, “shearing and “lithely” (2, 7, 15,17,23-25). These words are effective due to their tone and meaning. Comparing “snapped” to “glowered”, “glowered” has a less dangerous tone (15). In my version, replacing all the effective diction changes the tone of the poem. In the original version, the poet describes the shark in a way that guides us to believe that the shark is an impenetrable, fearless and powerful creature using metal descriptions of the shark such as “sheet iron”, “three-cornered”, “knife-edge”, “tubular” and “metallic grey” (4-6, 10, 19-20).With the changes of the diction, the feeling is no longer there and now creates a feminine feeling of the shark, where the shark seems less terrifying due to different wording such as “lithely” to “slenderly” (24). In the original version, there is repetition of the word “leisurely” which is now “casually” (2, 25).

One might say we are presented with two fish stories in looking at Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, a marlin in the former and a whale in the latter. However, both of these animals are symbolic of the struggle their hunters face to find dignity and meaning in the face of a nihilistic universe in Hemingway and a fatalistic one in Melville.
