The United States and Japan are amazingly different, but also very similar. Japan is located in Eastern Asia, and its capital is Tokyo. Japan’s government structure is quite similar, but different compared to the U.S’. Japan, as the U.S, has three legislative branches: executive, legislative, and judiciary. Japan has a prime minister, whom is like the president of the U.S. But in this case, the prime minister is not elected by the citizens, but by the Emperor and the Diet. Japan’s government is different than the U.S. because it consists of an Emperor and the Diet; the United States has neither of these in our government. The emperor is believed to be chosen by the gods, centuries ago, so that is why Japan is in the hands of Emperor Akihito. He’s viewed as a person who is symbolic to the country and its values. Compared to the U.S., we do not have anyone that we see as a figure, but has limited power. This is different than my culture because I value religion a lot, but do not see any human being as a figurehead or that is selected by the god(s). In my culture/religion, we believe in only one God, and see him as the only powerful creator, and value his creations, but do not believe he selects people, like presidents or emperors, to be someone to value dearly. The Diet of Japan is the authority of the Legislative Branch. The Diet consists of an upper house, The House of Councilors, and a lower class, The House of Representatives. It is similar to what the U.S. consist in the government because both countries’ legislative branch consists of a House of Representatives. But Japan has House of Councillors, while the United States consists of a Senate. It was interesting to learn that the House of Councillors is the upper class, but consists of 242 members, while the Senate consists of
