7) About a week ago I visited you again in jail: like always it was the basic nonchalant greeting and then I started talking to you about all that has happened in my life- I talked, you listened. That is how it is now. I talk while you nod and listen. No one would believe that we used to be best friends! They'd think I'm your shrink or something! I ask and ask you for news but all you do is shrug and tell me how 'at-home' you are to all this structured chaos. I know you're lying-(I'm not stupid, I was your best friend!) You tell me you had a few jobs to do and sometimes you work out outside but nothing new. I wish you could hear what I don't say: 'It sucks that you always act so uninterested when I try to start a conversation about you, it …show more content…
"Why do you come all the time!?" you repeat. "I came here for 8 years because I-" I groan, "I just told you!" "Right," you say, "pity.. pity was the reason you came! Pity and guilt!," you laugh sarcastically, "this is just great! The only person who ever comes to see me does it out of pity!" I stare at the monotonously white ceiling- not out of tiredness or annoyance but shame. Pure ironic shame. "Like I said," I continue staring, "you should be a little more thankful, or nicer." "I dont want to," you say. "No kidding, Aden!" I say increasingly hysterical, "you shouted at me, insulted me, blamed me-" "You're the only person I can do that to!" You shout, "you are the only person I can insult, hurt, anger, confuse-- heck, you are the only person I can talk to who isn't a government employee or inmate!" I sit back down. "The last time I acted out in front of someone, two people ended getting killed and I know it's my fault!" You admit, "I like you Elise, I really do, but for the sake of your life, stop coming! No one else does, it makes me feel wrong and you" you groan, "you can do something better with your time! I am a burden Elise, a ticking time bomb.." you look at me sadly, "I will explode one day, right in front of

In this critic, I will be analyzing and comparing two books. The first book is “A question of Freedom a Memoir of Learning, Survival, and Coming of Age in Prison” by R. Dwayne Betts. The second book is “Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing” by Ted Conover. In this comparison will first give a short summarization of both books. Second I will be answering the fallowing questions, what prisons are discussed? What types of prisoners are there- age, race, sex, level of crime? How current is the information? What are the conditions of the prisons? How are the prisoners treated? How are the guards and their viewpoints represented? How are the prisoners and their viewpoints represented? What forms of rehabilitation are there? What are the social relationships with other inmates? What opportunities are available to occupy prisoners? What point of view is the author taking – critical, Positive, does she/he write from the viewpoint of a guard, a prisoner? What evidence is/are the author’s points based on and how is the evidence presented - for example, first hand observations, Statistics? Also what changes, if any, are proposed or discussed by the author? How does the information in this book compare with what you’ve read in the text and articles and what you have observed on a class trip? Lastly what is your opinion of the information and viewpoint expressed in the book?
Someone, suspected of a crime, is arrested by police. Later on, the suspect goes to court to face their charges. A classic episode of Law & Order. But, where do these suspects go in between the two events. They are held in their local jail of course. While people are familiar with the arrest and courtroom scenes from TV, many are unfamiliar with the jail scene, which becomes home to the suspects who cannot make bail until a court rules a verdict for their case.
Once released from prison, he or she is deemed a felon. Losing the right to vote, not being able to serve on a jury, and inability to enforce his or her second amendment is just a few of the disadvantages of serving time, but this is just the textbook interpretation. There is no much more that is at stake when you step foot behind bars. Once a person gains their freedom the better question to ask is what wasn’t taken form them? Their job if there was one in the first place, their children, their family, and most importantly the part of the person that made them a member of society.
The US Prison Industrial Complex (PIC) is used to attribute the rapid expansion of the US inmate population to the political influence of private prison companies and businesses that supply goods and services to government prison agencies. The prison industry complex is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States and its investors are on Wall Street. After spending $5.2 billion on prison construction over the past fifteen years, California now has not only the largest but also the most overcrowded prison system in the United States. The state Department of Corrections estimates that it will need to spend an additional $6.1 billion on prisons over the next decade just to maintain the current level of overcrowding. At least 37
“Ding”, the bell had just come alive with a mighty ring, ending the last day of school. I began shoveling the materials from my trainwreck of a locker into my bag when a close friend of mine approached me. She began bragging about the birthday party she was planning. Her arrogance annoyed me because she did not invite me, claiming that I wouldn’t know anybody. Honestly, she probably was scared of what I would do to her reputation. All she ever thought about was herself, with no regard for others. This wasn’t the first time it happened, and this pattern began to anger me, I deserved better. And that is when I decided I didn’t need her, I left her to live her own life. I felt as free as a bird but she was left alone like Scrooge. My friend
The correctional system is based on helping offenders become part of society and not commit any crimes. Many prisons begin the correcting criminals since they are inside the jails, but many prisons do not. Prisons provide prisoners with jobs inside the prison where they get very little pay close to nothing and many have programs that will help them advance their education or get their high school diploma. There are various programs prisons provide to prisoners to help them get a job or have a skill when they are released from prison. In contrast, prisons that do not provide programs or help to prisoners rehabilitate and enter society again will be more likely to commit another crime and go back to jail. The Shawshank Redemption prison did not
Evidence for a crisis has occurred many times within these 30 years. The past few years has seen the prison system without a single spare cell for new inmates. As we know, the United States holds the most prisoners in the world. California is one of the states that has highest rates of prison population in the nation. The number of prisoners have been rapidly increasing and is leading to overcrowded prisons. The California Department Corrections and Rehabilitation, or CDCR, needs to work on the expansion of prison systems as a means to deal with the overcrowding problem. According to an article by Adam Liptak, “the case of Brown v. Plata [in 2011] that violate the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment…” it forced California to reduce crowding in its own institutions. As a result, California Governor Jerry Brown decided to contract private prison. He signed
The Convicts, by Iain Lawrence, is a story of a young boy who faces great odds to complete his quest to help his father. This novel takes many twists and turns through the landscape of London, more specifically in nineteenth century London. However, London is not described in the picturesque view many people have come to know London as. Lawrence shows the uglier more rugged lifestyle of many poor people in London during this time period. Within a society like this in London, swindling, gangs, and prison become common subjects among the lower classes, especially in this novel. Although life was hard for many, the characters in this novel find adventure along the way while aboard ships and through underground sewers.
for youngsters who have a long history of convictions for less serious felonies for which the juvenile court disposition has not been effective” (qtd. in Katel).
Sometimes, with immigrants, guilt emerges as a result of the inability, for instance, “to say during Christmas, ‘This year I’m going to buy a ticket and I’m going to go’” (Chin). Another aspect of such guilt emerges from the following: “if they want to come to do it legally. Do not do it like I did 30 years ago, to not risk their life... I didn’t come with a visa, I didn’t come with a passport”(Chin).
Throughout this paper, one will obtain a better understanding of the correctional system and how it is an important aspect of the criminal justice system. Therefore, the history of corrections, their mission statement, and sentencing goals will be briefly discussed. In the correctional system, there are different alternatives to imprisonment, such as probation, parole, and intermediate sanctions. I believe that parole makes a significant impact on the criminal justice system because it gives inmates who have already served time and shown good behavior the opportunity to be released early from prison. For example, there are two primary models of parole. First, the parole board grants a prisoner their parole based on their judgement
Alex Kearney 1/19/2017 Sociology 100 Module Discussion 1 To understand the social imagination, I have considered the idea of a prisoner locked in a prison cell. To further the power of this example, we might consider that this prisoner was born in this cell, and has never stepped foot outside of this cell. This prisoner has no concept of the outside world. The entire universe is irrelevant beyond the walls of this cell.
