The correctional system is based on helping offenders become part of society and not commit any crimes. Many prisons begin the correcting criminals since they are inside the jails, but many prisons do not. Prisons provide prisoners with jobs inside the prison where they get very little pay close to nothing and many have programs that will help them advance their education or get their high school diploma. There are various programs prisons provide to prisoners to help them get a job or have a skill when they are released from prison. In contrast, prisons that do not provide programs or help to prisoners rehabilitate and enter society again will be more likely to commit another crime and go back to jail. John Howard wasnted a sanitary facility for inmates and a reformed regimen where he created the Penitentiary Act of 1779 to provide a more secure prison for inmates. There are many prisons that do not keep their prisoners under good sanitary cells and many get ill and can lead to deaths. For example, in the Shawshank Redemption, prisoners were given food that had maggots and was very unsanitary for the prisoners to eat the food. Also, when prisoners were put into the hole, they were not able to bathe for the period they would be inside the hole. For example, when Andy was put into isolation for one month, he was not able to bathe or change his clothes into clean clothes and would only be given food and have no human contact. Inmates were treated inhumanely, where the Penitentiary Act of 1779, was not followed and did not provide a secure and sanitary prison for the inmates. This act was also focused on inmate reform, but the Shawshank Redemption prison did not provide any reforms for the inmates. For example, when Red is going to be released he is asked if he is rehabilitated and ready to go back into society and he says if they mean if he feels regret about the crime he committed, he says he does feels regret for what he did, but that he is not rehabilitated at all, he says that is a made up word by politicians, but does not apply to prisoners. The basic concept of educating prisoners while they are in prison is logical and simple. It makes sense to make convicts' time in prison productive. This leads to a person that, when he leaves prison, knows a better way of life than committing crimes which would inevitably send him back to prison. What are prisons for? This is a question that must be asked in order to understand the problems facing prisons. Prisons serve two main functions; separation and rehabilitation. Criminals cannot be allowed to walk around with everyone else without being punished; they must be separated from society. The thought of going to prison helps deter most people from crime. Rehabilitation is the main goal of prison; making a bad person into a good person by the time they are released. These seem like cut and dry functions, but as of late some believe that prisons in the United States have failed in their attempts to separate and rehabilitate.

The mass media uses prison life as the source for movies and television shows. Over the years there have been many movies written about prison but the most prominent in my mind is Frank Darabont’s, The Shawshank Redemption.
