Jack Philips, who is the owner of masterpiece cake shop refused to make a wedding cake for the same sex marriage based on his religious belief. Same sex marriage is singed into the law, and now it is legal in the United States. But, it doesn’t mean that the new couples always get the same services as the other couples receive such as wedding cakes, flowers, photographs, or venues. The issue with the Philips is that Colorado, and the 21 other states has a law barring discrimination based on sexual orientation. According to USA TODAY’S report, the problem arose when Charlie Craig and David Mullins came into Philips’s shop to have a cake for their wedding reception. Their wedding already was held in Massachusetts, where the same sex marriage is

When you think your average baseball player, what do you think of? The player usually has all of his arms, legs, and no physical disabilities. Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. Also, they called him names like Mr. Hook.
It is interesting to see however that Chick-fil-A does support a few organizations that do not support the “traditional” definition of marriage. For this exact reason some locations do not allow Chick-fil-A to build restaurants at their location. A particular area that has been debated in the past is college campuses. For example, fairly recently a college located in California did not allow a Chick-fil-A to be built on their campus because they did not agree with the beliefs of Chick-fil-A. However, a college in New York did allow a Chick-fil-A to be built on their campus even though they also do not agree with Chick-fil-A’s marriage beliefs. It is interesting to note that Chick-fil-A has more recently moved away being involved with different locations that support traditional marriage beliefs. It will be interesting to see if this affects the company’s overall success in the future.
“Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle,” (John 19:17-18). Jesus Christ’s valiant life was terminated with a horrendous execution. Tom Robinson’s did as well. He lived his life in the name in the name of others, helping everyone that he could, going out of his way to save people, even Judas, who would betray him. Tom did this aswell, constantly assisting Mayella, she who would betray him in court. Jesus had followers who believed in his message, just as Tom had believers in his innocence. Jesus and his followers would face persecution, just as Tom and hisi believers would. The judgements and death sentences of Jesus and Tom would make them become martyrs. The Martyrdoms would be essential for their causes. Many aspects of Tom Robinson’s life and death
What does Sairy say the Wilsons have been to the Joads? She says that they have been nothing but trouble.
The Huffington Post reports that New York’s Lesbian Chef Mirella Salemi was awarded $1.6 Million after her employer attempted to pray away the gay in her. Edward Globokar held employee prayer meetings inside his establishment, Mary Ann’s. Salemi had worked at the restaurant for six years. "He not only threatened her soul, but he also threatened her livelihood," Derek Smith, a lawyer for Salemi, told the Post. "He thought praying might cure her of her sexuality, but she is someone who didn’t need to be
In July of 2012, a same sex couple went to a cake shop in Lakewood, Co looking forward to getting a cake decorated for their wedding. But, the owner Jack C. Phillips declined to decorate a cake for their wedding, causing the couple to file charges discrimination against the shop. Although the case is still pending, This incident is what created the court case Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The court has not made a decision on what to do about this case.
Slavery was a horrible institution that was widely practiced in the Southern and Mid-Atlantic states in the United States during the antebellum period. It was formally abolished in the United States in 1865, but is still practiced on a very small scale today. It also happens in other countries. Slavery is having somebody who does everything for you without pay. Usually if a slave refused to do their work, they were abused. Three important people who supported slavery in the United States were James Henry Hammond, John C. Calhoun, and William Harper.
In the article, “Let Chick-fil-A Fly Free” Steve Salbu, gives his opinion about the controversial statements against same sex marriage by the president of the restaurant chain, Dan Cathy. Cathy stated that “the business is family owned and family led and very supportive of the family in the Biblical definition” and his belief that if he were to support it with his business he would anger God. Salbu as a gay man is naturally upset with the comment and feels “family’ is something that has been earned by the gay community, but stands by his belief that to “truly respect individual freedom, he must also respect Mr. Cathy’s”. Salbu speaks to the fact that politicians have taken sides and tried to “run
Another well-known case is about a Colorado bakery owner name Jack Phillips who refused to make a cake for the reception of a gay couple claiming that it was against his religion. Phillips lawyer argued that the refusal to make a cake was not about discriminating against gays, however, about a baker being forced to use his talents to create something that goes against his belief (Healy, J. 2015).
Smith spoke with RollingStone saying, “Obviously gay marriage isn't legal in churches, and we're doing a gay marriage today, in the church. We're the first ever to do it. It's obviously not a real marriage, but still.” To some this may just be an arrogant gesture towards the church, but many see it as a courageous act to prove his point about
Arlene’s Flowers owner Baronelle Stutzman is charged with violating the state’s public accommodation laws by declining to provide floral arrangements for a gay couple’s wedding. However, the article states that the U.S. Supreme Court has long recognized that “the First Amendment protects artistic as well as verbal expression…should likewise extend to floristry.” If floristry does count as a form of expression, then Stutzman also has the rights to not provide floral arrangement. However in this case, I am on the side with the state. Her profession in no way seems to be directly linked to the participation of the gay wedding. She is only placing flowers at the wedding in order to decorate, not enforcing the gay marriage or embracing in what the customers are about to do. In fact, she is not even in the wedding, so how is this really compromising her Christian beliefs? For all we know, she could actually just use the religion excuse to not serve the gay couple. Recognizing a difference from religious belief and anti-gay prejudice is really difficult, but if the Court do some background research on the person and family and friends, then maybe we can see if the person is refusing services for a legitimate reason or not. This also brings up another problem. If Stutzman refuses to serve a gay wedding due to her religious belief, would she use the same excuse for a gay customer in store? If she did, she is discriminating the customer for the customer’s sexual orientation. Not only that, she probably at one point already served a good number of gay customers without knowing. Serving the customers do not affect her religious belief or compromised her for anything, so decorating the flowers at a gay wedding should be no different. If it makes her feel better about it, she does not have to know that it is a gay wedding that she is serving. I personally believe that we should serve the
Aaron and Melissa Klein, the Christian owners of a bakery in Oregon, continue to stand firm in their position on violation of their First Amendment right when they were fined $135,000 for declining to make a cake for same-sex wedding ceremony in 2013. The bakery owners paid the fine last year in December and also appealed in the Oregon Court of Appeals in April claiming violation of their religious freedom by government which imposed hefty fines to punish their alleged motive of discrimination against the same-sex couple, Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer. The state lawyers filed a brief justifying the charges against the Kleins, to which the bakery couple replied this month.
There have been many artistically inclined people who have come along with a dream of being a very famous poet. Out of those people, some have become some of the best and well known poets of all time. Philip Edward Thomas was a man, who with hard work and dedication, became one of the best literary writers of his time. Thomas went through many obstacles in his life, one of them being his father,to get to the point he wanted to reach. By chasing his passions, Thomas had become one of the best known poets of his time.
Same-sex couples should be allowed to publicly celebrate their commitment in the same way as heterosexual couples. It should be legal because the gay community should have the same rights as everyone else does. Many argue that same-sex couples should have the ability as to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that banning gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination. People opposing gay marriage say, “We must protect traditional marriage and the traditional family.” Matthew McTighe of the Mainers United for Marriage debates responds by saying, “Prote...
