JPMC with assets of $2.4 trillion has about 260,000 employees. Its stock is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Under the J.P. Morgan and Chase brands, it serves millions of consumers in the United States and many of the world’s most prominent corporate, institutional and government clients. As the largest bank holding company in the US, JPMC has more than 5,600 branches in many states, and is among the nation's top mortgage lenders and credit card issuers. I knew more about JP Morgan and a banker’s life. It is not easy to be a banker, because it needs a long working time. However, if people like their job, they will not feel tired.
In 1871, the banking house of Drexel, Morgan & Co. was established by John Pierpont Morgan. "Twenty four years later it was renamed J.P. Morgan & Co., which it was to remain until the firm's purchase by Chase Manhattan in 2000. (Hughes 23) At this point, Chase Manhattan was the largest banking company in the United States. This was a far cry from the 1980's when Morgan "boasted the largest market capitalization of any American bank and was more expensive to buy than Citicorp. (Hughes 11)" While J.P. Morgan could not imagine the path banking would take in the U.S. with his passing in 1913; his banking house would have a strong hold on American banking for much of the 20th century. The introduction of bank holding companies and certain laws placing restrictions on American banking such as the Glass Steagall Act of 1934 brought about many changes in American banking and allowed for the emergence of international banks to supplant the "House of Morgan" in the new era. The Bank of Canada is Canada’s central bank, whose current Governor is Mike Carney. It was founded in 1934 by the Bank of Canada Act of the same year. The country’s banking system was quite stable even before the Bank of Canada was established, mainly thanks to its branch banking structure, and showed little interest in central banking in the early 1900s. In addition, the banking system was somewhat being regulated by the Canadians Bankers’ Association. However, as the Great Depression took Canada by storm, talks about its then financial state were brewing. Some even questioned the country’s ability to meet larger demands. The central bank was formed from the Act in 1934, and starting running in 1935, but as a privately owned institution. Then, when William Mackenzie King was re-elected as Prime Minister after a full term by Richard Bennet, the new government made an amendment to the Bank of Canada Act, making the bank publicly owned by 1938, as it is today (Bank of Canada: History). Its primary objective was to be able to support financial and economic wellbeing of our country (Go Currency: Bank of Canada). In that way, it has many roles and functions as a central bank, which I will expand in the coming paragraphs.
Visa and MasterCard are non-stock, not for profit membership corporations owned by thousands of diverse financial institutions (i.e.- banks, credit unions etc.). The Visa association was formed by a group of American banks in the late 1960’s to assist its members in issuing general-purpose payment cards and signing merchants to accept those cards (Allen, 2000, 2). Visa and MasterCard are considered to be an “open” or joint venture relationship with each other and their association members. In essence, this means any financial institution may join the Visa and MasterCard associations assuming they can meet certain capital adequacy requirements, and comply with certain association rules. In return, Visa and MasterCard provide essential functions to the member banks. They license their members to issue Visa and MasterCard branded credit and debit cards, sign members to accept those cards, market the cards to ensure brand recognition, develop new card products and services, and provide an infrastructure of communications, processing, authorization, and settlement functions necessary for the system to operate. Together Visa and MasterCard account for almost 80% of the overall market share in the credit card industry.
By using Porter’s Competitive forces model (Laudon & Laudon, 2007, pg. 96) to analyze Morgan Stanley’s business environment a general position of the company can be provided. Through evaluating the five competitive forces of Morgan Stanley’s traditional competitors, new market entrants, substitute products and services, customers and suppliers we can give a general view of the business to provide a competitive advantage which results in a positive affect in the future.

The company was established on the Golden Rule (also the name of its first store) to treat others as one would like to be treated (JCPenney, n.d.b). Although the organization was founded as a small business in Kemmerer, Wyoming, J.C. Penney is currently a thirteen billion dollars publicly-traded corporation that is headquartered in Plano, Texas (JCPenney, n.d.b). Therefore, to better understand its growth, J.C. Penney’s strategy, marketing, finance, human resources, and operations have to be evaluated.
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)is the world’s largest accounting firm and ranks as one of the giants in the global professional services arena. PwC employs over 146,000 people with 766 offices in 150 countries. The Firm is led by Samuel A. DiPiazza, CEO, and is headquartered in New York City on Madison Avenue. Its clients include 84 percent of the Fortune Global 500 companies. Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand merged in 1998, which made the combined firm the top player in public accounting. In the 2007 fiscal year, PwC had gross revenue of over $25 billion. Structured as a limited liability partnership (LLP), the private company would rank in the low 300s on the Fortune 500 companies.
