Ivan Turgenev is one of the greatest Russian writers of the nineteenth century. In his pieces, Turgenev shows deep concern for the tangible problems of Russia at that particular time, such as the evolution of peasants and intellectuals, the women question and the hierarchy of Russian population. In his masterpiece Fathers and Sons, Turgenev emphasizes the enormous difference between subsequent generations by describing their distinctive philosophical views and life ideologies.
The protagonists of the novel, Arkady and Bazarov, are two graduates who return to their homes wrapped up in new, inflexible philosophical views meant to give sense to their meanings and to bring enlightenment to the “ignorant” old generation represented by their parents. However, age is the only thing that unifies the two characters. Thus, they represent the young, enthusiastic generation that wants arduously to build its place in the world and to prove that it is better than the previous “backward” generation. Nevertheless, Arkady and Bazarov portray two completely different personalities. Bazarov is a simple but strong and self-confident character who is indifferent towards the emotional and spiritual world. He promotes the nihilism current, putting value in concrete, objective things rather than abstract ones. He states about Arkady’s father that he “wastes his time reading poetry,” and claims that “a good chemist is twenty times as useful as any poet.” In addition, he thinks of the old generation as being composed of “old idealists” who believe in romanticism and foolery. Also, the author describes in a subtle way the gradual increase of labourers’ and peasants’ social level in the society. Thus, they start to ask for increases in their wages and to quarrel among themselves over the division of property.
Overall, in the novel Fathers and Sons, Turgenev depicts the Russian rural everyday life in a very perceptive way. By appealing to simplicity and details, he makes the novel very persuasive attracting the readers’ attention. He manages to point out the concerning problems of the Russian society by picturing the intellectuals’ day by day life and their contradictory visions. In this way, Turgenev shows not only his own views but also his great writing talent.
The short story, “Ivan Fyodorovich Shponka and His Aunt”, explicates the life of a man named Ivan Fyodorovich Shponka. We see him briefly in his young years, followed by his life in the army, and his return to the farm where his strong characterized aunt resides. We can see immediately that this man lives in constant cleanliness and dutiful paranoia; these are some of his desires that he wishes to exhibit to others. We can also see his fears, which reside in the confiscation of his masculinity and independence. This short story has many elements that resemble others in the Nikolai Gogol collection.
In describing the setting, the general locale is the prison in the coldest part of Russia- Siberia, geographically but socially depicting the social circumstances in the prison, but draws analogies to the general social, political and economic circumstances of Russia during the Stalinist era (form 1917 revolution up to 1955). The symbolic significance of the novel and the film (genres) reflects experiences, values and attitudes of the Russian society. The genres reflect the origins of the Russian social disorders and massive counts of political misgivings which watered down real communism in Russia. The Brothers Karamazov is an enthralling thriller about the strive for self-redemption in the eyes of God as well as in the hearts of the Russians. The murder of Fyodor Karamazov, a foolish and heartless savage who betrays his own sons of a father's care, venomously seeps its way into Dmitri, Ivan, and Alyosha's lives causing innocence to request fault and suffering. Dostoyevsky's writing in this book is such that the characters and setting around the main subject, Raskolnikov, are used with powerful consequences. The setting is both symbolic and has a power that affects all whom reside there, most notably Raskolnikov. An effective Structure is also used to show changes to the plot's direction and Raskolnikov's character. To add to this, the author's word choice and imagery are often extremely descriptive, and enhance the impact at every stage of Raskolnikov's changing fortunes and character. All of these features aid in the portrayal of Raskolnikov's downfall and subsequent rise.
Rodion Raskolnikov is a murderer, a damning criminal. Yet, he also has a warm heart that no one can equal. This character of paradox, of contradictions, of irony, is the true Raskolnikov. He is the Jekyll, and he is the Hyde; the zenith and the nadir. Although the novel depicts a variety of characters, it mainly revolves around one figure – a young man, named Benedikt. From the beginning he seems to be rather naïve and comparable to the traditional Russian character – Ivanushka Durachok (Иванушка Дурачок). He does not ask questions, he goes with the system and, in general, is quite ignorant of the world. However, he does experience a major character transformation once he encounters the “joy” of books. This man is the absolute opposite of everything society holds to be acceptable. Here is a man, with intelligent insight, lucid perception, who is self-admitted to being sick, depraved, and hateful. A man who at every turn is determined to thwart every chance fate offers him to be happy and content. A man who actively seeks to punish and humiliate himself. Dostoyevsky is showing the reader that man is not governed by values which society holds to be all important.
Brothers Karamazov, written by the accomplished Russian novelist - Fyodor Dostoevsky, is an ambiguous and somewhat contradictory novel when it comes to the issue of belief and disbelief in God. The ambiguity seems to represent Dostoevsky’s constant spiritual struggle with the issue of faith. This struggle is best reflected in the enlightening interactions between the two Karamazov brothers, Ivan and Alyosha throughout the novel, each appears to embody a different side on the spectrum of religious belief in Dostoevsky’s mind. They are Dostoevsky’s ultimate depiction of the conflict of faith and reason in light of the suffering in the world.
Dostoevsky’s St. Petersburg is a large, uncaring city which fosters a western style of individualism. As Peter Lowe notes, “The city is crowded, but there is no communality in its crowds, no sense of being part of some greater ‘whole.’” Mrs. Raskolnikov initially notices a change in her son marked by his current state of desperate depression, but she fails to realize the full extent of these changes, even after he is convicted for the murder. Raskolinkov’s beliefs transform from the beginning of the novel to the ending. His theory was never complete and to test his theory he commits the murder of an evil soul. The irony of this novel is Raskolinkov who though he was an extraordinary men, have the will to commit murder but not the power to live with the crime on his hands.
