English philosopher, Sir Francis Bacon once stated, “revenge proves its own executioner.” If you were to have killed an individual and now someone is trying to kill you as revenge, both of you would have committed a crime and not only ruined your own lives, but your family as well. There have been opposing arguments as to whether revenge can be justified or is it considered misguided. Although it may be impossible to experience hostile emotions in the moment you are feeling ridiculed, cheated, or betrayed upon sufficient self- control, an individual can calm oneself in order to avoid reactive rage. Vengeance is a basic tool of human interest whether society chooses to accept or bind itself to the fact, it is an indisputable truth. It is up …show more content…
Revenge is one’s desire to retaliate and get even. Whether in interpersonal relationships or the workplace, human beings retaliate for perceived injustice if they continue to be mistreated, if no apology is presented, and if they feel morally justified in their outrage. Studies of normal populations tell us the urge to retaliate lingers through adulthood. Not only through physical or sexual assault, but also through emotional abuse which provokes retaliatory behavior, unless a sufficient number of mitigating factors impact on the desire and action of seeking revenge. In Blocking the Transmission of Violence, you read how crimes have a lasting effect on all members of society, especially if it hits close to home. Juvenile crimes and theft is a prime example in Blocking the Transmission of Violence of how these crimes can make the areas feel unsafe and the community can also lose pride from within. However, the emotional and physical toll of crime may also serve to empower …show more content…
Although vengeance causes division amongst the community, it also generates the formation of gangs. Groups begin to arise and put citizens of society in danger. Gangs try to collect more followers in order to gain power in which adolescents are victimized. Within these groups, crimes of all sorts occur and infections and diseases are imminent. This causes transmission of diseases within the community and to whoever falls victim due to the brutality of the streets. CeaseFire’s founder, Gary Slutkin, hopes the organization will prevent shootings and in the process interrupt drug trade. Since most employees of CeaseFire were former hang leaders, they are experienced in this type of lifestyle and know how to manage these situations in which police officials would not know how to handle (Blocking the Transmission of
Gang violence is a complex issue with many causes consisting of; lack of jobs, dysfunctional schools, and a biased judicial system, these things have shaped and molded the social structure of this South Central society into something dark and perverse, it has given rise to violence and death, and the inconvenient truth of the matter is it’s our societies fault. While revenge may feel sweet at times, in most cases it is destructive to yourself and those around you. The article “Revenge:Will You Feel Better?” makes one contemplate this, and draws the question “is revenge really worth it?” Well, in the article, Karyn Hall suggests that “Revenge can be a strong urge, but you may not feel better if you act on it.” In fact, in a study performed by Kevin Carlsmith showed that “...the students that got revenge reported feeling worse than those who didn't…” With this, one may see that revenge is pointless, and in most cases leaves you feeling worse than the people you performed it
For the meek, vengeance pleasures the soul; however, it is only temporal. Like an addictive drug, revenge soothes anger and tension by sedating the mind with ephemeral comfort. Despite the initial relief, pain ensues and conditions seem worse than before. Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the non-violence movement in India, stated once that “an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.” There is no such thing as a sweet revenge.
Burglaries, robberies, and shootings, all of which may leave victims or innocent bystanders severely hurt or dead, are now frequent enough to concern all urban and many suburban residents. Living in a dangerous environment places young people at risk of falling victim to such malicious and aggressive behavior observed and learned from others. Social institution such as education, family, religion, peer groups, etc., play a major role in the influence of crime in the urban neighborhoods that Anderson describes. As said in the essay, "although almost everyone in poor inner-...
Many people percieve revenge to be something that falls under justice, as they are driven by emotions, while others consider getting the police involved as serving justice. Moreover, some people find revenge to be pleasing and satisfying, but to argue the point that just because something is more satisfying does not mean it is
Revenge is a fairly strong emotion; it’s wanting to retaliate towards those who wronged you. Revenge is such an uncontrollable way of retaliation that it can result in a destructive outcome or carried out successfully. Although the results may vary, revenge sums up to one thing which is pain of some sort, affecting both parties or just one. Throughout history we see many tales of revenge and redemption. Often revenge does leave the one carrying it out feeling victorious but this can suddenly change as the process of karma generally begins in some tales.
Revenge will most often never be the same as justice, as human nature and emotion get in the way of absolute justice. Works Cited Alexandre Dumas, the Bible, Hammurabi's Code, Francis Bacon, Twelve Tables.
Sometimes in our lives, someone whom we care about and trust ends up betraying us or acting in a way that feels like a betrayal. We feel hurt by their actions and wonder why they would do such a thing, asking ourselves what we had done to deserve it. Then things go one of two ways: either we forgive and forget or we feel the need to take revenge; we want them to feel the pain we felt and understand what they’ve done, although ultimately, our vindictive actions only serve to hurt us further.
Revenge, on the other hand, refers to an action taken by an individual as a response to an act of injustice. The principle of revenge is “an eye for an eye”…. Can revenge be justified and be as equally part of justice if they both seek retribution for a wrongdoing? The universal distinction between justice and revenge is quite distinctive, is there more beyond their differences? Revenge is retaliation by a wronged party against the person or people they see as having caused the wrong.
Revenge is such an enormous part of a being human. It is something that no matter how much you try to avoid part of you will persistently lust for it. When you are hurt in any way your natural instinct will always tell you to make the one who hurt you feel just as bad if not worse as how you felt. It is such a natural and powerful feeling, that when revenge is incorporated into a story it makes it so much stronger. Revenge will make you see so many more sides of characters and make them seem much more complex. Revenge can give fictional characters a more human quality. That is why so many writers use it as their theme.
It is the idea of revenge that sends a cool shiver down the spines of justly men when they begin to question as to why someone would stoop to such a level. But yet it is still more than an idea for revenge has been carried out in various forms along all the eras of history side-by-side of that of novels and tragedies. Even so, revenge is still a dark scheme; an evil plague of the mind per se. It is such a plague that will turn even the greatest persons of the brightest, optimistically capable of minds into lowly, as well as lonely, individuals. Thus, revenge will, and can, only end in despair and agony of the mind. Therefore, provided that all that has been said is true, revenge would appear quite unseemly to the observant onlooker. However, taking an in-depth insight into revenge you can uncover quite a compelling feature, which is best summed up into one word. Pride. Pride is the one clear motivational proprietor needed to push a protagonist into the downward spiral of personal vendetta. Without pride, revenge is no more than a mindless massacre of flesh and bone ending in the obliteration of any hope for reconciliation.
Gang violence is a major problem in our society today. If nothing is done soon, gang violence could take place in our neighborhoods. MW Klein, a gang researcher, says that gangs are an aggregation of youths who perceive themselves as distinct, and that are viewed as distinct by the community. Klein also states that the gangs call forth a consistently negative image of themselves through their actions (Klein). To those involved in gangs however, gang membership provided a youth means of attempting to consolidate their gender identities (Douglas). Most of the early American street gangs have historically been ethnically based. Early gangs were mainly Irish, Polish, or Italian (Klein).
Revenge and retribution are often incorrectly grouped together and taken as synonymous terms describing the same thing. While at first glance this erroneous alignment may seem ostensibly fitting, but in actuality, this is indicative of a misunderstanding of what both terms really entail. Moreover, this confusion frequently transgresses the misuse of terminology and gets inaccurately applied to a theory of punishment known as retributivism. Since the latter half of the 20th century, retribution has become one of the most influential and persuasive theories of punishment, arguably displacing even its principle rivals—deterrence and rehabilitation theory. Despite its prevalence, there is a pervasive sentiment that manifests in this fallacious,
People can be motivated to take revenge on others for various reasons. While these reasons may be considered as very serious or rather trivial, they are all motives for revenge. Revenge occurs when a person has been offended or angered by an individual and in result they have the desire to pay them back. People’s opinions on revenge differ from each other, some may believe it is justified and some don’t. Mahatma Ghandi believed that revenge is not the answer and he stated that “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”. This quote portrays the opinion that if everyone gets even then there will be no one else; if we all take an eye for an eye everyone would be blind. Revenge can be learnt through real life experiences as well as fiction and can be shown as justice or unacceptable. It becomes difficult to determine when revenge can be justified but is revenge always worth it?
Love versus vengeance “While seeking revenge, dig two graves – one for yourself”. By these words Douglas Horton means that in life not everything goes as planned and every object drops by its own weigh. Sometimes even situations that are easy to handle can turn around and make people go form the revenger to a victim position. Revenge comes from anger and penalty, therefore when someone feels like causing pain to other or damage somebody for any reason even when they deserve it the consequences which can be whether physical or emotional not only goes in one way but full turn, and comes back damaging their own self and everybody end up paying because the act of revenge is never the perfect exit for any conflict. That’s why in revenge, if somebody
