Lord of the Flies Essay Would a twelve year old boy make a good leader on a stranded island? What choices would he make? In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of boys crash land on an island and are stranded by themselves. They are left to collect food and resources so they can survive while trying to find a way of escaping off the island, but the problem is that they live in fear of what else is on the island with them. They need a structure of a government to set rules so they choose Ralph to take the burden as leader but some will not like this government like Jack and leave but it is not possible with two different groups to be on the same island who think differently and coexist. To survive he starts sending people to do tasks like get food and gather resources so they can keep surviving and meet their basic needs.These reasons are what makes Ralph such a great leader but people were not always willing to follow him because of his rules many decided to leave his tribe and join Jack’s tribe because it was better. People may argue that Ralph is a bad leader and Jack might have been a better leader than Ralph because if Ralph was such a good leader then why did everyone leave his tribe to join Jack’s.Even in the beginning Jack was the most suited to be leader and might’ve been better then Ralph “While the most obvious leader was Jack” (Golding 22). Later everyone joined his tribe and left Ralphs because he could not provide protection from the beast “‘Who’ll join my tribe?’ ‘I will’ ‘Me.’ ‘I will’” (Golding 151). Jack in the beginning of the book had the most leadership skills and was the most fit to be chief out of everyone and should have been the chief if not for Ralph’s stillness that he presented.
