As par techcrunch.com on December 18, 2107 “Twitter stated; that they will begin enforcing new rules around hate speech and abusive language”. I will be talking about if I feel this is an appropriate step, or is it infringing on people's rights to free speech? Are there any other social media platforms that have taken similar actions? Also, is it the responsibility of these companies to protect users, and if so, how far should they go? According to help.instagram.com, Instagram states; “we remove content that contains credible threats or hates speech, content that targets private individuals to degrade or shame them, personal information meant to blackmail or harass someone, and repeated unwanted messages”. This sums up to hate speech and abusive language. Instagram also states; “it's never OK to encourage violence or attack anyone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disabilities, or diseases”. “When hate speech is being shared to challenge it or to raise awareness, we may allow it. In those instances, we ask that you express your intent clearly”. In the terms and conditions of some companies. It could possibly state that it isn’t the responsibility of the company to protect users against hate speech and abusive language. However in this state, if matters get too intense the users will likely not chose to use the media platform provided by that company. Which can eventually cause an immense loss of the company. Therefore I believe that most companies do (and should) take on the responsibility to protect users against hate speech and abusive language.
