The issue of gun control has been around since the creation of rifles and handguns. There are two sides opposing sides to the issue of whether there should be strict laws and regulations to limit the weapons that can be purchased or the ones that qualify should have the right to buy any gun that they desire. The dispute between these two groups has caused the many different riots and supreme court cases. So far there has been around 92 different gun control cases in the supreme court (gunlaws.com). Every year, people die because of guns and most of those are legally purchased and registered weapons. “There were around 464,000 gun related deaths from the year 1999 to 2013. 270,237 suicides (58.2% of total deaths)” (wisqars). Some people that aren’t emotionally stable because of a recent situation that happened to them could use that weapon to hurt themselves or potentially hurt others. A lot of these automatic weapons come with high capacity magazines and that could be very dangerous if it is easy to access. An investigation found that “high-capacity magazines were used in at least 50% of the 62 mass shootings between 1982 and 2012. When high-capacity magazines were used in mass shootings, the death rate rose 63% and the injury rate rose 156%.” (Mark Follman and Gavin Aronsen, A Killing Machine). Lots of these mass shootings took places and schools and movie theaters and the targets were innocent civilians. Elementary school kids that were defenseless, got killed and families were torn apart because the wrong person had the right weapon do it because it was his “right”. A lot of these criminals that cannot afford to buy a gun on the black market and do not want their name attached to it, steal them from people that bought them legally and use them to commit criminal acts. According to Lynn Langton, who is a researcher “Between 2005 and 2010, 1.4 million guns were stolen from US homes during property crimes” (Lynn Langton, Institute of Medicine). Lawrence Hunter, Chairman of Revolution PAC, stated "The Founders understood that the right to own and bear laws is as fundamental and as essential to maintaining liberty as are the rights of free speech, a free press, freedom of religion and the other protections against government encroachments on liberty delineated in the Bill of Rights." But times have changed. America has one of the biggest militaries in the world and that is who is going to be fighting in the war, not local militias. Also, when the second amendment was added to the constitution, there were no automatic weapons that shot 90 rounds per minute and high caliber snipers that could hit a target from two miles away. The most advanced weapon was a rifle and if you were a well-trained soldier, you could fire 3 round per minute on average. In the modern era, giving that kind of fire power to one person can have devastating results. Past events have proven that. But why do some people just refuse to see the truth?
