Despite Frankenstein being written in 1818, it still contains many themes and ideas that are extremely relevant and important in our modern lives. One theme that is very prevalent is thinking things through before doing them. This can be seen frequently in our everyday lives but more importantly in our sciences. This is seen in the book Frankenstein when Victor creates the monster. Victor did not think about the repercussions of making the monster, he only thought about advancing science.
Society has a problem with doing things before they think it through. Everyone is guilty of this. Especially in science. There are countless cases of scientists conducting experiments that they think will advance our lives but instead only cause pain, destruction,

and torture. For example the case of Sigmund Freud and Emma Eckstein. Eckstein came to Freud in the late nineteenth century with a nervous illness. Freud diagnosed her with hysteria and excessive masturbation. His friend and peer Wilhelm Fleiss believed that Freud’s diagnosis could be treated by cauterizing the nose. So Fleiss performed an operation on Eckstein where he scorched her nasal passages. She suffered horrific infections, and was left permanently disfigured because Fleiss had left surgical gauze in her nasal passage. This took place in a time where our scientific knowledge was limited, something like this would never happen today. However there are more modern experiments that raise lots of red flags. For instance Optogenics. A biotech system that allows scientists to turn neurons in your brain on and off using different colors of light. A team of Stanford graduate students successfully did this to a mouse. They threaded a fiber optic cable through the mouse's skull and could flip a switch and shine a blue light into the mouse's brain. When they flipped the switch the mouse immediately started running in a counterclockwise circle. Then when they flipped it off the mouse stopped and looked up at them. The mouse didn't have any side effects like a seizure or death which is common in experiments like this. Now this experiment in itself seems innocent enough but it's what it opens up that is concerning. Imagine if the government could put things in human brains to control people and make them act against their will. Now this does stray into the category of conspiracy theories but the technology is there for it to be possible. Who knows, in ten years we could all be controlled by the government! Man has a passion to advance things and to push everything to the limit.
A quote from Frankenstein that really encapsulated this idea is "So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of Frankenstein — more, far more, will I achieve; treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation." - Victor. This quote beautifully shows that Victor wants to advance science and do things no one has ever seen. The theme of this is altogether noble and inspires people to do bigger and better things. However like all good things it can be taken too far and mutated into something evil and wrong. I think as a community we need to stop, take a step back and think about how and where we advance science and technology to. Science is an amazing thing and millions of people are saved from disease, illness and injury with the advancements we have made. We need to continue research and development for things like this. There is a very fine line we ride when dealing with science. On one side we have the miraculous, genius, and life saving things we can do with science. The other side is pain, suffering, mutilation, mind control. Things no living thing should have t0 endure, and things that will harm our lives and our communities. We still have time to correct our trajectory towards self destruction if we make changes now. Something must be done now and we need to talk about this issue more. Frankenstein did a wonderful job highlighting this problem and it has only become more relevant to our lives as we advance as
humans.

In Volume 1 and 3 of Frankenstein, Victor’s reason for creating the “monster” changes drastically; however, ultimately leading to the same consequence of suffering and depression. Through this change in Victor, Shelley argues that all humans have an instinctive notation of right from wrong and learn from their mistakes. Victor left his friends and family to go to college; when there, he had no friends and social life. His top and only priority was his schoolwork; he read all he can about the sciences, especially chemistry and anatomy. When finished with his studies, Victor is ready to start his creation when he confirms his proceedings aloud, “Winter, spring, and summer, passed away during my labours; but I did not watch the blossom or the expanding leaves-sights which before always yielded me supreme delight, so deeply was I engrossed in my occupation. The leaves of that year had withered before my work drew near to a close; and now every day shewed me more plainly how well I had succeeded.
Many timeless novels have impacts on our everyday culture, not only as a book, but also through music or movies. Many popular novels have multiple adaptations, which shape how we approach their interpretation, in ways we may never even notice. In some films, humans are depicted as monsters, whether through their actions, or through the thoughts of other beings. In these films we find issues with our own society, and in turn see ourselves as monsters, and look for ways we can change, for the better. One particular novel that influences this side of Hollywood is Mary Shelley's “Frankenstein”. The ways Frankenstein influences pop culture can be seen in science fiction films in which humans are depicted as monster, and “monsters” are seen as more humane beings, such as I, Robot, and Ender’s Game.
When the novel “Frankenstein”, by Mary Shelley came out in 1831 the general public was introduced to the idea of man creating another man, scientifically without the use of reproduction. The disasters that followed, in the novel, demonstrated the horrid fact that creating humans was not natural. That was in 1831, when the knowledge of science had not yet evolved enough to act on such an idea. Now as the start of a new millenium approaches, having the capability to scientifically produce one human who is genetically identical to another, or cloning a human, has a lot of people questioning weather or not it is our moral right to do such a thing. It is a classic debate between principles of science and principles of religion.
In Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein the protagonist Victor Frankenstein creates a monster. The monster in the novel is deprived of a normal life due to his appearance. Like the creature, some serial killers today are killers due to the same rejection. In the novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley warns that a childhood of abuse and neglect will often result in evil actions.
Mary Shelley’s novel arises several questions relevant to the present day. A question that arises from the novel is whether man is born evil or made evil from his life experiences. The debate on whether how far man should pursue knowledge exists today as well as other questions challenged in the novel therefore “Frankenstein” is a popular novel at present as much as it was in the past.

Technology is supposed to be seen as such an advancement and great accomplishment. What others may not always know is sometimes it isn’t all fun and games, it could be dangerous. As seen when we created the atomic bomb and guns, their only purpose is to destroy and cause pain to others. Although they are not always in use they are a constant threat to our well being. We need to take into consideration the positives and the negatives of the technology we create now in present day. Many people change their position on this overarching question: What responsibility do people have when developing new technology? Frankenstein defied human boundaries when he created the monster and because of this not only his life, but the lives of others have also shifted, this has caused their lives to spiral into an unjustified conclusion. Curiosity was the main cause of him learning how to create such a thing, his lack of caring for the thing that he created led to his undoing. His motivation for creating life, comes from the fact that he lost someone dear to him. Frankenstein believes that through these new scientific powers human kind would be served with a positive effect. Disease could be banished and self glory could result. "what glory would attend the discovery if I could banish disease from the human frame and render man invulnerable to any but a violent death"(40)!
Science is not inherently evil and never will become evil. Though the knowledge gained from science can be used toward producing evil, intended or not, and can be dangerous. The story of Victor Frankenstein shows the irresponsibility possible in the advancement of science and furthers the caution which humanity must take when it attempts to master its environment or itself. The proponents of cloning humans today should remind themselves of the lesson which Victor Frankenstein before they have to deal with the products of their research and learn the hard way.
Mary Shelley’s text, Frankenstein is a text, which is highly regarded in today’s society for its outstanding literary worth. However, the text as it was seen during the time of Shelley and its appearance and appeal today, most certainly differ. The most significant difference is that over a hundred years ago, the text was seen as a popular text, our modern day Simpsons, if you like. Conversely, today it appeals to the cannon of high culture. Its gradual change over time has been based on a number of deciding factors.
“In the beginning GOD created the Heavens and the Earth”; thus, their power is limitless even in scenery. Mary Shelley’s 1816 gothic science fiction novel, Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus, introduces us to a young intellectually inquisitive man, Victor Frankenstein, who walks a thin line between scientific exploration and blasphemous conduct while attempting to bring glory to his name by creating a new species as if it were human. The setting in this novel highlights much significance: the unnatural occurrences of man have caused them to seek refuge in nature’s pure beauty implying the restorative powers of nature in the face of unnatural events.
Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein cannot merely be read as a literary work of the early 19th century. It represents the workings of young Shelley's mind. Further, it represents the vast scientific discoveries of the time, combined with Mary Shelley's intuitive perception of science. She views science as a powerful entity, but also recognizes the dangers if uncontrolled. Shelley demonstrates this fear in the book as science drives Victor Frankenstein to create his monster. In the end, it is also his use of science that inevitably becomes his demise.
For my final project of the novel unit, I chose the novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley and first published in 1818. Frankenstein is a tale about an ambitious young scientist who in his practice oversteps the boundaries of acceptable science and creates a monster which destroys everything Victor Frankenstein loved and held dear.
