If you were to complete an Ironman, a triathlon in which you swim for 2.4 miles, bike for 112 miles and then run a marathon right after would you feel proud of yourself? The theme of the article “An Irongirl’s Story” is to finish is to win. This is shown various times throughout the story. The meaning behind “to finish is to win” is that even if you do not come in first place, you still win just for completing a grueling task such as an Ironman race. This theme also means that you should be more focused on accomplishing your goals than beating someone else's. The theme “to finish is to win” is shown many times throughout this story. One example of this theme is in the second paragraph of this story where it states “...She woke up at 5:30 am every morning in order to swim for an hour before her high school classes began. During track season, she trained with long-distance runners. ...logging a weekly average of 200 miles on her bike and running between thirty-five and fifty miles a week.” This quote shows how much time and effort Greta put into training so she could complete this Ironman race. For Greta, her goal was to be able to complete the race, not to win it. She is and should be more focused on completing her own goals than being faster than someone else. …show more content…
This sentence says “The cheers of the crowd revived her, and with a final surge, she strode down Ali Drive, crossing the finish line with a young man from Switzerland, who grabbed her hand and held it with his over their heads.” This quote sums up how finishing a strenuous task like an Ironman race can bring people together. In this part of the story, even though Greta worked very hard to be in this race, she is not trying to get ahead of or beat the man that she crosses the finish line with. Instead, she runs with him at an even pace so they can cross the finish line
While she was racing Greta did not once think about the people in front of her or how many people had she passed or been passed by. In the passage it says, “The cheers of the crowd revived her, and with a final surge, she strode down Ali Drive, crossing the finish line with a young man from Switzerland, who grabbed her hand and held it with his over their heads. This shows that winning wasn’t the point of the race. The point of the race was to finish. She crossed the finish line with a man from Switzerland, but she wasn’t concerned with beating him to the finish line, all she was focused on was getting to the finish line. In the race all she focused in was being able to do the best she could. Having the ability to complete along fellow athletes was her dream come true. All she cared was about having the strength and using her training to be able to complete the Ironman. Throughout her run she faced many obstacles, but she kept preserving and she never gave up, and that's what the race was about to her. The race was a chance to demonstrate and prove to herself that she was able to accomplish her dream. Her thoughts throughout the race help show the reader that just being able to finish was her dream, and accomplishing your dream is truly
I think this is one of the themes because in the story Ali is always trying to beat Dane and she loses one of her friends but the good thing is she gets them back. Another one of the themes in this story is Try,Try again and don't give up because multiple times in the story she almost gave up but she pushed through and tried

This quotation shows that Gilbert wants to demonstrate to the world that despite what he went through, he overcame his awful life experience and became the man he is today. Gilbert 's terrible life experience helped mold him into the ambitious person he is now. He challenges himself and tries improving himself to reach his goal, because of his past experience. With that, the genocide had a big impact on Gilbert 's life. Also, Hall observes, "In truth, runners don 't race to beat other runners. They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares" (603). This quotation shows that running is not always competition, but it helps runners overcome their

Throughout the play She Kills Monsters, different feelings and opinions arose. Primarily, it was not appealing to my taste of genres, and I couldn’t care less about what appeared to be a nerdy play, additionally it made me feel puzzled. Secondly, the play was entertaining and humorous. Lastly, the role-playing of the characters in this world of fantasy was amusing and enlightening. Although the play’s genre was fantasy and adventure, I speculated that it illustrated important values that we should incorporate in our lives.
A huge part of the story showed how a person could overcome all the odds to become successful is feats such as sports and other activities. Most sports champions show great endurance to win many competitions. Similarly, Hillenbrand indicated that Louis, a competitive runner, trained until “he (had) rubbed the skin right off one of his toes, (leaving) his sock bloody” (Hillenbrand 23). As a result of all the hard work, Louis overcome struggles such as a bleeding shin, broken ribs, and a damaged toe to set time records for many races. In my experiences, I see many people take sports and other extra-curricular activities as a burden without embracing the challenges. In contrast, Louis illustrates the rare athlete and human being who seeks solutions to
In “Imani All Mine”, we see 15-year-old Tasha Dawson having to face the adversity of not only being a teenage mother but also being poor, female, and black. The name Imani is an Arabic name and means belief or faith. The name that Tasha chooses is symbolic for the faith that she has for and in Imani. She has faith that Imani will live a life more fulfilling than her own by prospering in all that she does. In “Imani All Mine”, Tasha Dawson is forced to overcome obstacles that no teenager should have to overcome. She has to raise Imani, while nervously observing her neighbors drug-dealing and trying to keep up with her schoolwork. At times it seems the only thing holding Tasha together is the remembrance of her days before diapers.
In the story “Don’t Give Up The Fight”, the theme is being different. In the story, Ava is the only girl on the track team and the other people
The second thing he talks about is that guys do pointless things just because it was made a challenge. Dave talks about just to make some people shut up about their running records he decides to challenge them and say he can beat their record. In the first run he was only three-hundredths of a second away from beating it, as he began to run it a second time he felt his hamstring pop and he could not walk correctly for weeks. Although the guys were sympathetic the man who held the record would often call him and brag that he still had not beaten his
First, Finish Strong is inspiring. Finish Strong is a choice that is made by you. This quote possess a mindset to perform at an exceptional level, and refusing to accept mediocrity. Finish Strong is two powerful words put together to make a dynamic duo.
Going into the first race we had not expected much since Susan and I had never run this type of race. There were so many crucial things that we had to remember. It wasn't just to get out of the blocks and burn up the track; there was a baton involved, a certain amount of steps to take, and even a certain way to hold the baton.
Even if I like winning I have learnt that losing is not bad. You learn a lot from losing or doing mistakes, and that have helped me a lot through my whole life so far. I remember when I lost in ski racing against my sister when I was 6 years old. I thought that it was the end of life to lose, and I got devastated. I realized after a few times that being that upset every time was not sustainable. The last years when we have been ski racing together have been totally different, and we help each other instead of competing against each other.
The final stanza creates a vivid picture in your mind when read. If you can imagine anything that has to do with winning, or a victory of some kind, you can see what she is speaking about. For example, if someone was in a race, it would be better to see the winner cross the finish line, and know you almost made it; than to be so far behind that you had no chance of winning.
The exhaustion you feel after finally crossing the finish line at a marathon is like nothing you have felt before. You are completely drained physically, mentally, and emotionally. Your legs hurt to the bone, at the same time you are gasping for air while your throat screams for moisture. All of this is a small price to pay for the overwhelming feeling of self pride and accomplishment you are overcome with. Running the marathon is only half of the process. Training is very important with steps such as finding motivation, diet, safety, stretching, and last preparations the day of the marathon. With many physical, mental, and social benefits the hardship is well worth it. I greatly enjoy running and hope to one day run a full marathon.
