The stage props, scenery, and special effects aided in making this the award winning play it is. The style and tone when first entering the play was a background with a fairytale landscape with the main actors’ homes located behind them as part of the background drop. The design concept lets you see into their separate cut out homes with a lift of one drop, but is more viewed in its’ “Into the Woods” or large forest setting for most the play. The one used most during the play is of trees in front of a Cyclorama that projects a dark green light that makes the forest feel dark and mysterious with a moon that appeared from time to time to represent it being late at night. The most obvious special effect was a projection used with a picture of Cinderella’s dead mother that appeared on the tree in the beginning when she visited about her wish to go to the Prince’s festival. An interesting effect was seeing a scrim put to use for a Lil Red’s Grandmothers house that the audience could see inside of as soon as Red entered and by shining light from behind it. Knowing now that is actually a cloth that can look so realistically painted on the outside and the walls becoming so transparent you could see what went on behind its’ closed door. Before knowing of a scrim it would have been just dismissed as possibly a thin plastic or something instead. There was also turntable located towards the back of the stage that seemed to be in a rake position for most of the play but could turn around and be a platform and it was used throughout the play to depict their travels as surface areas changing just like in a real forest. It was used to depict a cliff of some sort that the Baker’s wife falls off of and dies right after the prince leaves her in the woods after their secret love Fest in the forest. Lil Red sings about always listen to your mother since she had been disobedient when talking to the wolf and was fooled by his kindness when mother would have known the whole time. This play lets you know that the grass is not always greener on the other side and that blissful happiness is unobtainable with what life may throw at you. Not that someone is destined to be unhappy because with every struggle you manage to get through will end in happiness, just not necessarily the one that one a person would dream up for themselves. This show also puts focus on working together been more important and effective. Even in the begging the Baker wanted to go on the quest for items that would break the spell alone. He wanted her to be safe, she came anyway, but it wasn’t until he ran into her sad because he has not found all of the items that he realizes they have done better at the times they worked together on this quest. He is conflicted about leaving his baby and working with the others believing that without her specific team work with him that he could no longer be a father and the child would be better off with the princess Cinderella. At the end they try and leave a message about how children will all listen. They may not always mind what you say, but they will
