After I read the chapter, all I could say is the world’s really strange—maybe gone mad. First-off, it’s pretty disturbing when you think that love could actually be a key to homicide—that “love” itself could be the very root of motives for murder. Whenever I see the news on TV about intimate or family-related homicides, it awes me and makes me wonder how could they do such a thing. But anyway, I’ve observed that some do it to hide an affair from the spouse, some are for money, others are for authority (certain family status), and some are just for attention. It usually happens between couples. Intimate partner homicide usually involves a man killing his female partner, often after a long and escalating pattern of woman battering. When women kill male partners, they typically do so in self-defense, although such defense may not qualify as such in a court of law. However, deaths attributable to domestic violence far transcend intimate partner killings. Non intimate partner family members also kill each other in so called "family homicides." Fathers kill children, mothers kill children, children kill their parents, and brothers kill sisters, and so on. Men sometimes kill other men over a woman they sexually compete for. These "sexual competitor killings" are much smaller in number than either intimate partner or family homicides.
In some cases, however, like in the Scott Peterson case, we can see that there’s this thing about getting away from responsibility (I.e., fatherhood) and running off with somebody else. Sometimes we can’t even expect that homicide would actually occur to such a “happy” marriage, because they appear to be quite normal. Regarding this, there was a time when I had this conversation with a friend about marriage and she just said, “Sometimes I pity those who get married, because I see most of them just stay in the marriage because of commitment but never with love.” It’s such an irony, but I admit it’s true for some cases, since we see them happen in real life now. I’m not saying all marriages or relationships would end up that way, but we never know what’s going to happen, because anything’s possible.
Some perpetrators, when realizing their actions, also commit suicide. Many more Americans die from suicide than homicide. Most of these suicides involve male victims, some of whom kill thei...

...ed. The same could be said of homeless women dying on the streets since roughly half of homeless women report "fleeing abuse" as the reason for their homelessness. Likewise, prostitutes have experienced enormous amounts of interpersonal abuse at the hands of male intimates, family members, and their clients.
Sometimes people are downright unpredictable. And the society itself could just be the thorn on our sides. After I read the chapter, I don’t know what to feel or even say about it, because at one point it sounds impossible. If it wasn’t for the book, I wouldn’t even find out that there’s such a thing as “intimate” murder. But the more I read about it, the more I realize there are even deeper questions. I noticed that in murders, you can’t really idenitfy motives in general. Each has an individual motive and it’s very intricate. We can’t even tell if the suspect is crazy or has a psychological imbalance. I might have been watching a lot of CSI or Law & Order, Court TV and such, but to me I think through reading, it makes me more aware of how dangerous we people could be.
Tim O’Brien wrote the novel The Things They Carried in 1990, twenty years after the war in Vietnam. In the novel,Obrien takes us through the life of many soliders by telling stories that do not go in chronical order. In doing so we get to see the physical and mental things the soldiers carry throughout the war in Vietnam.Yet the novel is more than just a description of a particular war. In the things they carried Tim O’Brien develops the characters in the book slowly, to show the gradual effect war has on a person. O’Brien shows this by exploring the life of Henry Dobbins, and Norman Bowker.
As Schwartz introduces the topic of tolerance it seems as if he is going to describe an ideal liberal society with complete tolerance, in every form of the word. Then as he continues onto his forth sentence, this idea is disturbed. He states “And we reserve our strongest condemnation for individuals and institutions that are intolerant.” This shows that tolerance has conditions and limits. Therefore, the question “what are the multi-stages of tolerance, and how does one decide what is tolerable and what is not?” is formed.
Aristotle believes that happiness rests within an absolutely final and self-sufficient end. The reasoning behind this theory is that every man is striving for some end, and every action he does must be due to this desire to reach this final end. He believes that in order for a man to be happy, he must live an active life of virtue, for this will in turn bring him closer to the final end. Although some may believe that these actions that the man chooses to take is what creates happiness, Aristotle believes that these actions are just a mere part of the striving toward the final end. I believe that Aristotle’s great-souled man is the highest virtue of character; His actions are never too extreme and he is appropriate in all his manners. The magnanimous person is within the intermediate state of character. “The deficient person is pusillanimous, and the person who goes to excess is vain” (§35). The magnanimous person surrounds himself with great things. The great things occurs when “he receives great honors from excellent pe...
Within a relatively short period of time things would go wrong very rapidly for both of us. In the very first paragraph of O’Brien’s story, we are given excellent information about a girl that will be the source of distraction for O’Brien’s character Lieutenant Cross. O’Brien states that Lieutenant Cross, “carried letters from a girl named Martha” (O’Brien 1516). Ultimately O’Brien’s Lieutenant Cross becomes so distracted by these letters and the false love created in his mind, a soldier dies. The distraction that would lead to my horrible day came from working with this co-worker for almost ten years, and the fact he was kind of a fatherly figure. Because of this type of working relationship, I trusted his judgement almost without question. The trust I had in my co-worker’s judgement would ultimately cloud my judgment, and he would pay the price and get badly
Suicide is the eleventh most common cause of death in the United States. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a person takes their own life once every fourteen minutes in the United States (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention [AFSP], 2011). Still, with suicide rates so high, suicide is a taboo topic in our society. Though suicide is intended to end one person’s pain, it causes an immeasurable amount of pain and suffering to loved ones close to the deceased.
The most notable discovery or key concept behind intimate partner violence with women as victims, would be that the overall rates have seen a general decrease. As found in the National Trends in Intimate Partner Homicide report, "Spousal homicide rates for both women and men have declined between 1974 and 2000" (Bunge, 2002). Many of the authors discussed present different perspecti...
A mother finds her 17 year old teenage son hanging from the rafters of their basement. To hear of this occurrence is not rare in society today. Every 90 minutes a teenager in this country commits suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds. The National suicide rate has increased 78% between 1952 and 1992. The rate for 15-19 year olds rose from two per 100,000 to 12.9, more than 600 percent. (Special report, Killing the Pain, Rae Coulli)
Notably, hip-hop is the culture from which rap music emerged. According to Keyes, rap music is a musical form that makes use of rhyme, rhythmic speech, and street vernacular, which is recited or sung over a musical soundtrack (Rap Music and Street Consciousness, 1). Rap is a combination of MCing and DJing, which are two of hip-hop’s four
“Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.” - Phil Donahue. As a complex, tragic public health issue, suicide occurs in men significantly more often than in women. Suicide is simply defined as the act of intentionally ending one’s own life, but the factors that play into a person making that decision are anything but simple. The most obvious and severe effect of suicide is the loss of a valuable, meaningful human life. According to Harvard School of Public Health (n.d.), suicide affects parents, children, siblings, friends, lovers and spouses; the loss for society is psychological, spiritual, and financial. People who lose a loved one to suicide often experience devastating effects and deal with a complex grief. These “suicide survivors” typically feel a range of emotions from sadness, blame, and guilt to extreme anger and confusion. “Suicide among males is four times higher than among females and represents 79% of all U.S. suicides” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 2012). This gender paradox is one of the most compelling components regarding who is most at risk to attempt suicide. Why is it that men commit suicide more often than women? More than four times as many men as women die by suicide because depressed men are less likely to seek out help, men typically use more violent, lethal methods and cannot be resuscitated, and men carry the pressure of employment, providing for and protecting a family, and maintaining relationships.
What most listeners do not understand is that a lot of hip-hop music is not understandable from the get-go. It takes intense analyzation of lyrics and an open mind to be able to understand what it is really about. Some people can’t understand what is being said just by listening with their ears, and they don’t bother to go study the lyrics. They then leave with the perception that hip-hop is chalk full of, well, nothing. One of the greatest rap lyricists of all time, Shawn Carter, also known as Jay-Z, says, “People don’t bother trying to get it. The problem is that so many people don’t even know how to listen to the music.” Mister Shawn Carter has also said that rap is poetry. He mentioned not to forget that the lyrics in the song were transmitted from feelings, thoughts and emotions to lyrics written on a piece of paper. He went on to say that if you hung that piece of paper up on a wall and someone went up and read it as it was, they’d say, “Wow, this is genius. This is poetry.” McHorter’s opinion on rap can and will be agreed upon by many, many people; however, this conclusion can only be reached without h...
In the late 1970’s hip-hop/rap music emerged as one of the most popular musical genres, and it remains as one to this day. However, there is a big difference in the content of a song like Sugar Hill Gang’s 1978 single “Rappers Delight” and a modern day rap song. When hip-hop music first began it served as a type of party music that was made primarily from African American men. The music quickly gained popularity, and before long, members of all races were enjoying it. However, in the early 1980’s hip-hop music became more of a mirror into ghetto culture rather than just upbeat enjoyable music. Rappers began to write edgy lyrics celebrating street warfare, drugs, and promiscuity. Unfortunately this style of hip-hop never died off, and now it
Although, Socrates labeled humans as unjust and just or philosophers and tyrant 's he does not really create a real classification for humans. His classifications might be useful to identify behaviors but do not provide enough evidence to be used as actual classifications. Even with socrates claim that a person can not attain full happiness until they have found their soul, happiness is defined different in every human being. Even the people we may consider unjust have their own definition of
“Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain” (I-10). Ending a life is a big step in the wrong direction for most. Suicide is the killing of oneself. Suicide happens every day, and everyday a family’s life is changed. Something needs to be done to raise awareness of that startling fact. Suicide is a much bigger problem than society will admit; the causes, methods, and prevention need to be discussed more openly.
As I have grown up and experienced college, I have encountered numerous people and fellow students aspired to become engineers and doctors, all eager to become esteemed members of the community because of the status such careers bring. I, however, have always been drawn to the career path of pharmacy and becoming a contributing member of my community in that particular outlet. A pharmacy is in many ways a pillar of a community’s overall health and wellbeing as well as a valuable resource for medical and insurance related information. As a young person, I had always wondered what went on behind the high desks and cabinets in a pharmacy. I was always drawn and curious about the science and technology that was just behind those barriers that would ultimately bring good health to many patients every day. This is what peaked my interested in striving to
In January 1997, a man drove into the parking lot of a major company in Baltimore County, pulled out a gun, and aimed it at his girlfriend who was sitting in her car and killed her. The man shot himself. Several days after that, another man in another part of the county, in attempt to commit suicide, drove his vehicle the wall of a business and injured an employee who was sitting at his desk.
