Effective health care collaboration has been valued as a key strategy for the health care reform. The health care collaboration not only improves the outcomes of medical care provided to the patient, but also provides benefits to health care providers. In terms of the importance of providing an effective and convenient means of interprofessional collaboration and communication, Chi Mei Medical Center developed a patient-centered computerized platform to fulfill this purpose. The platform features an integrated core area and a spiral-shaped communication area, allowing the medical team to look at the medical care that the patient receives within seven days and faithfully show whether the team members have read the communication messages. In addition, the team members come from different departments like the Department of Surgery, Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics, Department of Anesthesiology, Medical Imaging Department, and Department of Pathology. The members also have different titles, such as director, professor, associate professor, assistant professor, attending physician, PGY, and medical intern. In addition, the team members often see the same medical situation from different angles. For instance, it may happen to a team with attending physicians from different departments. It is understandable that team members with different expertise and standpoints have divided opinions on the same medical situation. A medical team often deals with emergencies. Sometimes, the team members respond to the emergency medical situation with a reflexive reaction, which results in insufficient team communication in decision-making. This case may lead to medical mistakes. According to Swiss Cheese Model, every health worker may make mistakes, and can cut chances of making them if team members all mind it (Reason, 1990). Consequently, it is of great significance that the medical team members respect each other, value communication, and get to know others’ viewpoints and …show more content…
Among them are the interprofessional interventions based on practice-based IPC interventions, which may work when incorporated through a tool or routine into practice to improve the effects of IPC (Reeves et al., 2017). As medical equipment becomes more advanced and complex, and people’s consciousness of health is also growing, it is urgent that convenient and instant modes of communication be provided to medical teams to ease their teaching and learning as well as decision-making. With communication technology advancement and mobile device popularity, it is practical that an information communication platform be developed to support the interventions, which is conducive to the team communication as well as teaching and
It is obvious that a great deal of interprofessional research has been aimed to educate practitioners and nurses over the past decade for interprofessional practice (Orchard, King, Khalil & Beezina, 2012). The Institute of Medicine (IOM) “The Future of Nursing Leading Change, Advancing Health” (2010) recommend that private and public organizations, nursing programs and associations increase opportunities for nurses to lead and manage collaborative teams. Health care reform has created a shift in the healthcare delivery to place more emphasis on interprofessional health care teams (Sinfield, Donoghue, Horobi & Anderson, 2012). New implications are directed towards continuing education for health care workers to understand the meaning of interprofessional collaboration to support the changes in collaborative practice to improve patient outcomes (Orchard et.al, 2012). Encouraging health care professional to collaborate as a team more effectively may seem as the answer to improve the quality of care, but ineffective communication from team members to collaborate on the care needs often attributed to patient safety issues. Consequently, even when professional collaborative teams work together, there is no means to validate and measure the impact on continuing education for nurses about interprofessional collaborative practice (Sinfield, et al., 2012).
In this event, the matter that is unusual can be the fact that I have experienced and witnessed the process for interprofessional collaboration between the community nurse and other professionals that I have never knew about before. This event made me realize that there are many aspects of community nursing that I have knew about before where in this situation it is the importance and accountability of interprofessional collaboration. From my nursing theory course I have learned that interprofessional collaboration is when the nurse forms relationships with other professionals that enable them to achieve a common goal to deliver care and strengthen the health system and clients involved in it. (Betker & Bewich, 2012, p.30) In this event, our mutual goal is to provide the appropriate care for the patients/residents so they can restore their health after their hip or knee surgery. In the nursing leadership and management textbook it stated “interprofessional practice removes the gatekeeper and allows client access to all caregivers based on expertise needed.” (Kelly & Crawford, 2013, p.35) In this event, my preceptor and I gained knowledge about Revera and will pass on this information to patients who are interested in staying at a retirement home after they discharge from the hospital. One literature talked about how according to the Institute of Medicine, it is critical to have the capacity to work together as part of the interdisciplinary team to assist in delivering high quality, patient-centered care. In addition, effective collaboration among health care professionals results in improved patient care and outcomes. (Wellmon, Gilin, Knauss & Linn, 2012) This indicates the importance of interprofessional collaboration to provide...
It is true that as medical students we may never have to make decisions regarding the treatment plan of patients and that we will always be supervised when carrying out procedures. The chances of inflicting harm on patients is quite slim as a result of this but in the rare cases that it happens we should abide the duty of candour and inform our supervisors immediately. Since the role of a medical student is quite trivial in a multi disciplinary it is often the responsibility of the team leader to inform the patient of the error (4). When working in groups in medical school if we make a mistake or fail to do something that was expected of us to do we must not hesitate to own up to it. These are the situations in which we can develop the quality of candour before walking in to clinics and hospitals as
rofessionals from different disciplines collaborating to provide care to patients. Effectively coordinated and collaborative inter-professional teams are essential to the care and treatment of patients (Rowlands & Callen, 2013; Doyle, 2008; Ruhstaller, Roe, Thürlimann & Nicoll, 2006; Simpson & Patton, 2012, p. 300). Communication is a process of conferring information between individuals through use of speech, writing or various other means, and is critical to the success of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) (Higgs, McAllister & Sefton, 2012, p. 5; Rowlands & Callen, 2013; Sargeant, Loney & Murphy, 2008). An MDT must use multiple strategies to enhance communication and ensure their success (Doyle, 2008). An effective MDT generates opportunities that benefit healthcare, which is the reason for the recent dominance of inter-professional care in health practice (Simpson & Patton, 2012, p. 300; Rowlands & Callen, 2013). Many barriers prevent effective communication within inter-professional teams. Lack of communication within MDTs presents challenges to their success, leading to numerous consequences, including the failure of the MDT (London Deanery, 2012; Sargeant et al, 2008). Communication between professionals is the key factor underpinning the potential success or failure of inter-professional teams, the outcome of the functioning of MDTs will either benefit or impair care of patients.
What makes communication an important aspect of interprofessional collaboration? Cottrell, Mellor, and Moran (2013), mention how part of their findings with students who have participated in an interprofessional education program was how their interactions and communicating with each other became valued. With knowing each other’s skills and profession, they were able to work well as a team to obtain the best care for the patient. By sharing expertise and perspectives, we provide a common goal which is, improving the patient’s outcome. Moving forward, there is plenty of research on the importance of using interprofessional collaboration.
The more health care professionals collaborate, the more knowledge is used, and patient safety can be maintained. Communication is related to interprofessional collaboration, because health care professionals collaborate with each other about the patient through communicating with each other. “Collaboration among nurses, physicians, and other members of the care team can improve the outcomes of care for patients” (Engel & Prentice, 2013; IOM, 2010).
“Physicians and other health care professionals all agree on the importance of effective communication among the members of a health care team. However, there are many challenges associated with effective interprofessional (between physicians and other health care providers) communication, and these difficulties sometimes lead to unfavourable patient outcomes” (Canadian Medical Protection Association, 2011 p. 11).
In the provision of a high quality care, many factors influence the way it is provided; however, IC is crucial. A healthy work environment would result from open communication among the staff, it would increase the employees and patients’ level of satisfaction and sense of well-being. Good communication is the cornerstone for the IC, it is a complex process which requires to develop some skills to learn how to transmit some information. One of the most common factors leading to medical errors, are due to miscommunication, sometimes because the message is not clearly sent, and others because it is not clearly received or it is misunderstood (Danna, 2015). In terms of communication non-verbal communication must be taken into consideration as well; body language, facial expressions, use of space, and touch, entail conscious or unconscious movements and gestures, also impacts the communication among the staff and
The impact of social determinants on health care and how interprofessional teams sustain safe and therapeutic relationships. Within the scope of healthcare, social factors (non-medical factors) have a large influence on the outcomes of a patient’s health. This essay will discuss the relationship between social factors such as income, culture, and education and how they play a role in the patient’s overall wellbeing. It will also discuss how interprofessional teams working in healthcare can establish therapeutic relationships with their patients to boost the overall care and health outcomes of the patients. By considering the background of each patient, the interprofessional team aids the nurses in the care of their patients and can elevate
Given the complexity of healthcare system today, effective and efficient collaboration and communication among team members is critical to ensure patient safety. Daniel & Rosentein (2008) reported that during a typical patient’s hospital stay, a patient may interact with 50 different employees that may include doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, etc. They also reported that when healthcare professional are not communicating and collaborating effectively, patient safety is at risk for several reasons: break in communication flow, misinterpretation of information, incorrect telephone orders and overlooked orders.
One of the major problems in healthcare today is the ineffective communication among hospital personnel, patients and their families, and the effect it has on patient safety. Communication, as a whole, is very complex and is the root of teamwork and collaboration which aids in keeping patients safe in the hospital. Throughout the healthcare field today patient-centered care and patient safety seem to be major focus points. Unfortunately, ineffective communication can potentially cause patient harm and even death. The breech in ineffective communication between hospital staff and family was clearly portrayed in the story of Lewis Blackman. The lack of both communication, not just verbally but through documentation as well, and interdisciplinary collaboration were major factors that lead to the death of Lewis. Educational programs based on positive communication techniques that enhance collaboration, satisfaction within the hierarchy of the healthcare system, and patient-centered care should be implemented to ensure the safety of patients today.
Communication involves relaying information from an individual to another through the use of verbal and nonverbal techniques. Many factors affect the effectiveness of information relay. It involves evaluating verbal aspects such as tone of voice, the emotional content being communicated, the timing and rapport of the interaction with patients, and nonverbal techniques such as facial expressions, time invested. It is necessary for productive and satisfactory work environment, improved patient outcomes, and settling conflicts. The purpose of this paper is to identify issues with ineffective communication and ways to improve proper communication throughout the a hospital’s interdisciplinary team and patients.
I have explained three of the seven principles that I use while interacting with my patients daily. The three methods of communication were defined and explained how each is used in the healthcare setting. The communication method that works best on my unit was explained per my unit’s preference. The four-ethical principle regarding communication were explained along with how these principles and team communication affect patient safety. Overall, this paper has demonstrated why communication is important in the health care
As for the healthcare team that uses the system to chart, bill or schedule appointments, another critical flaw is a basic human error. The main usability disadvantage for the healthcare team is making unintentional mistake, which happen all the time, but in our profession, it can be detrimental to our patient. The obstacles that we face in using this system can be with inadequate staffing, distractions, fatigue, and using shortcuts due to frustration and lack of knowledge of the system. While there are many benefits and drawbacks in using a health information system like Epic, nurses and physicians need to continue to focus on patients’ needs and provide compassionate care while using technology to enhance the individualized demands of each
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been shown to be increasingly important in the education or training and professional practice of healthcare. This paper discusses the impacts of using ICT in Healthcare and its administration. Health Information technology has availed better access to information, improved communication amongst physicians, clinicians, pharmacists and other healthcare workers facilitating continuing professional development for healthcare professionals, patients and the community as a whole. This paper takes a look at the roles, benefits of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in healthcare services and goes on to outline the ICT proceeds/equipment used in the health sector such as the
