"In 2018 the internet is a vital part of people's everyday lives. Almost everyone has a smart phone glued to their side and is constantly surfing the web for information or using social media. Kids, teens and adults all use the internet for one reason or another. The rise of social media in recent years with websites like twitter, Instagram and Facebook has expanded internet use greatly. People use social media to share pictures and fun information about their lives. People also use the internet for endless purposes other than social media, like to read informative articles, looking up the weather, or searching for the newest viral video. What exactly is the extent of this freedom? The idea is that people should be able to say what they want as long as it does not harm anyone else or infringe on their rights. On the internet, people exercise their freedom of speech all the time. For example on social media a person may use their freedom of speech to express how they may not like the current president and his policies. However, if a person begins to make threats towards the president then they have gone beyond their freedom of speech. The government has the duty to monitor internet content when it has gone past this line of freedom of speech and becomes dangerous to others. The federal government should also be able to monitor the website when it comes to issues that are national threats like terrorism. According to a statement made Before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, groups like ISIL and al Qaeda use the internet to communicate with followers and recruit followers (Steinback).
