Racism is when one picks on another due to their race. Internalized racism is when one picks on another about their race despite that they are both the same race. However, both racism and internalized racism can both bring down an individual’s self-esteem. In the Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, Pecola Breedlove experiences many situations where she is attacked with racism and internalized racism. Mr. Yacobowski treats Pecola in a strange manner due to her skin color, Pecola is verbally attacked by young boys in her school of the same skin color, and Geraldine calls Pecola a “nasty little black bitch.” A sign of racism towards Pecola takes place in autumn in Mr. Yacobowski’s grocery store. Pecola goes to Mr. Yacobowski’s store because he sells candy for a penny each and she has three pennies in her shoe. Claudia, Frieda, and Maureen are about to walk home together and they hear something going on in the playground. When they go check the see a group of colored boys circling Pecola chanting racist comments about Pecola and her family. The boys who are known as Bay Boy, Woodrow Cain, Buddy Wilson, and Junie Bug started to call Pecola a black emo. Then, they continued on and told her that her father sleeps naked. Over and over again the boys would repeat these words, while Pecola wanted to get away. Since there was nothing she could do Pecola covered her eyes in embarrassment. This is a form of internalized racism because the first thing they do is go after the fact that Pecola is black and make fun of her for it. Yet, they are black themselves.
