The issue of internalized racism among Black students, staff, and families within educational settings is a significant but underexplored area of study. Internalized racism refers to the internalization of racial stereotypes and biases by marginalized groups, which can lead to self-doubt, low self-esteem, and a range of psychological issues (Pyke, 2010). This paper aims to bring to light the psychological impact of internalized racism in educational contexts, examine how it affects Black students, staff, and families, and highlight the need for further research on this topic. They may experience impostor syndrome, where they doubt their qualifications and capabilities, leading to increased stress and job dissatisfaction (Cokley et al., 2015). Moreover, the pressure to conform to predominantly white cultural norms within educational institutions can result in a diminished sense of identity and belonging. Research by Hunn (2014) indicates that Black educators who internalize racist beliefs may also struggle with self-efficacy and professional confidence, which can hinder their ability to effectively support Black students. Black families are also affected by internalized racism, which can impact their involvement in their children's education. Parents who internalize negative stereotypes about their racial group may have lower expectations for their children's academic success, influencing the educational aspirations and outcomes of their children (Tatum, 1997).
