Internal validity is concerned with the accuracy of the study’s design. The extent of control applied over potential irrelevant variables decide the position of internal validity. Checking for possibly confusing variables lower the possibility for a different explanation for treatment effects and gives more confidence that effects occur because of the independent variable.
There are seven threats for internal validity have been defined: (1) history, (2) maturation, (3) testing, (4) instrumentation, (5) regression, (6) selection, (7) experimental mortality.
History is a threat when other determinants external to the subjects show by advantage of the time goes by. For example, a researcher wants to study the effect of having pets at home on the social behavior of children.Without researcher`s information, the parents of the participant children in the experimental group have started to have children play soccer every Sunday.If there was a difference in social behavior of the children, how is possible to know what causes this difference?

If the treatment effect and experimental both demonstrate variability,it can be assumed that the change in both groups was triggered by one of the threats for internal validity. External validity generalizes the findings to individuals in the study sample with characteristics that are alike (DiClemente et al., 2013). The Role of Methodology in Developmental Research Developmental psychology may be defined as a branch psychology devoted to understanding all changes that human beings, experience throughout the lifespan (Berk. A researcher uses an experiment to scientifically test out a hypothesis. In an experiment there are many different factors that are involved. There is the independent variable, which is the cause, it is the one that is being manipulated, and the dependent variable, which is the effect, is the response. When conducting a experiment it is important to make sure that the only thing than can affect the dependent variable is the independent variable. This is known as internal validity. Using random assignment to separate the participants into groups helps eliminate any outside factors, and creates an equal chance for all participants to be apart of the experimental conditions. There are many pros and cons to this type of method. The experimental method creates a strong control of the variables involved in the experiment, which allows an easier determination on cause and effect. If needed, it is fairly easy to replicate an experiment and is less time consuming than other research methods. However there are many downfalls as well. Using a longitudinal research method would serve to indicate how individuals with the abuse are alike or different in the way their personality changes over time, and may reveal links between behaviors and experiences the individual had in their early life with their behaviors later on in their life.
