Interest groups are often a controversial topic when it comes to American politics because like a coin, there are two sides to the argument. On one side, people feel that interest groups have too much influence than the people in the government. On the other side, people feel interest groups are an effective voice for the people. No matter which side you are on, interest groups are a big part of the U.S government. Interest groups are effective because it provides the people direct access to their government.

There are three types of interest groups, public-interest groups, labor unions, and business interest groups. Public-interest groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and Greenpeace, usually work for the best interest of the public, not for self-interest. The Teamster Union and the AFL-CIO are labor unions that protect employees in businesses or factories. They help keep companies in check with their treatment of their employees. Sure business interest groups will fund certain congress officials that will try to pass certain laws or policies that will benefit their business but not all interest groups are like that. The non-profit interest groups act based on the group's interest than money. Take the NRA for example, if a certain individual strongly supports gun rights, he or she may want to join the NRA because they advocate gun rights, many voices are better that one. Interest groups offer better access to the government to all Americans. If some do not like any of the interests groups out there, they are free to create their own group.
