Sharifian GOVT 2305 04/09/2017 NOCASH Disturbed by the constant increasing costs of attending college, me and a few other students at North Lake Community College decided to create an interest group called the National Organization of Collegiate American Students Needing Help or more extensively known as NOCASH. As explained on The Social Studies Help Center’s website, “An interest group is any organization that seeks to influence public policy.” Our group is a single-interest group and our main addressing issues are:
· To restore education and make it affordable and open to everyone · To protect the human right to knowledge and education.
As we want our interest group to cater to every student, we decided

The advertisement team at NOCASH decided that the best place to start advertising our interest group was on campus. North Lake College has over 10.000 students, and hundreds of employees that could be interested in supporting our cause. Our first step was to create flyers, create an ad on the school newspaper, and to promote an event in which we would talk about the issues we want to address, and how we are planning on make our voice heard. Brochures have been made and put in every single office and classroom in campus, and the event has been organized.
At the event, once presented our goals to the prospective members of NOCASH, we started thinking about how to raise money. Starting with a balance of zero dollars, we thought that our best shot was to apply for foundation grants to foundations such as the Ford foundation, the Rockefeller foundation, or even the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation. We are also hoping on receiving some private donations, and we are currently planning a fundraise. We will advertise the fundraise on local medias, such as television networks, social medias (Facebook/Twitter), and the radio. We are also planning on bringing our issue to court, mainly to get more visibility and to gain credibility as we are seriously committed to finding ways to make education accessible and affordable to

A similar interest group is the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group (NJPIRG) at the Rutgers University. According to studentpirgs.org, NJPIRG students have been “working in conjunction to help lower the financial burden of college students.” Researching the issue, NJPIRG students found out that students pay around $ 1’500 per year for textbook. They so decided to create a program (OAT) to incentivize professors to switch to open textbooks. “The program awards 32 grants worth $1,000 each to faculty and instructors across the university who chose to adopt, remix or create a free or low cost textbook, as an alternative to traditional course materials.” The OAT program saved students a total of 1.6 million in solely two
Bernie Sanders, current candidate for the President of the United States, Democratic party affiliation, believes that all students deserve the opportunity to receive an affordable, quality education from the earliest stages of schooling to high-level degrees. He has sponsored bills to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, as well as to drastically reduce interest rates on student loan debt.
According to Trade Schools, Colleges and Universities “Many of America's top-performing high school students never apply to the most challenging colleges and universities even though they have the ability to succeed at them. They often come from minority and low-income households and end up pursuing more affordable, less-selective schools instead.” College can be a burden to many students in a variety of different ways, but the most common reason is due to funds. Making college free for students will help this problem by increasing jobs in the work industry that require degrees, they should be affordable to all people at all cost, as well as the funds should be completely cut off because it would increase jobs and help America's economy grow.
Interest groups are groups that are protected under the 1st amendment giving people the opportunity to get together peaceably and petition or express their different opinions to the government or group representatives. There are more than one hundred thousand interest groups. Interest groups are created for many different reasons but often they are the result of a major controversial event that happens in society. When a major social movement happens like the “Black Lives Matter” movement caused by police brutality towards African American individuals, it sparks groups of people who get together to make changes in our political, economic, or social systems. These groups become Interest Groups because they are involved in making a change to
The idea of freedom and equal opportunity that America was built on has sadly been lost and replaced with a system of quality education only being accessible by the wealthy. In-state college tuition should be free for all students meeting admission requirements, allowing students from the full spectrum of economic backgrounds to have the same opportunity to receive the same education. The incidence of poverty in the U.S. is directly linked to educational level. When a college degree is earned, income levels rise (College Board). The best use of federal government anti-poverty funds is not another welfare or assistance program; it is to make college education affordable for everyone.
...university needs to stop requiring packaged materials and should move away from textbooks that require one-time access codes. Also, they can reuse textbooks for several semesters because the core information remains the same from edition to edition, eliminating the need to constantly replace the stock with every new edition. Students would be held responsible for the condition of their assigned book, and will also be given the option of keeping it at the end of the semester. In either case, the school has options in place to recover the cost of the textbook should a student destroy or decide to keep a specific book. By implementing such a program, students at the University of Delaware will be less inclined to resort to illegal measures to save money, and they will certainly be less likely to incur even more debt as the cost of college tuition continues to rise.
In today’s society, the cost to attend college to earn a degree continues to increase, which results in an increase of students needing financial aid. A determining factor of how much a student receives is dictated by the Earned Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is mandated by Congress as a part of the required Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that every student must fill out in order to apply to college. Steve Cohen, an Op-Ed Contributor to the New York Times and author of “A Quick Way to Cut College Costs” believes that the EFC is flawed in that it does not accurately depict how much a family can contribute to the cost of a student’s education. Cohen’s solution is for Congress and the President to drastically cut the EFC to realistically reflect on the unequal rising of college tuition and average household income. Cohen is very effective in utilizing his research to appeal to readers. The statistics and figures he utilizes make it easier to understand his point.
I believe that the purpose of education is to produce the next generation of leaders who are intelligent and have great character. This idea is supported in the article “The Purpose of Education” by Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who fought for black and white people to have equal rights in America. He writes about the true purpose, and meaning of education in the article by saying, “Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction (MLK1).” This quote from the article explains that being academically educated is very important. It will help people stand up, be a leader, and take charge to make the world a better place for everyone. That gallant leader will argue against the fallacy, lies,

In conclusion, America provides many ways to help reduce the cost of college textbooks but society is still not satisfied with the outcome. The Open Textbook, Affordable Textbook Act, and book store rentals are wonderful programs, but has its disadvantages that hopefully would be resolved in the 2016 presidential elections. The statistics show that many students across the nation benefit from learning with quality of teaching, the amount of accessibility it provides without having to worry about paying off student loans. School administrations should consider about transferring to an act that would benefit both the school and the students, but also provide more equality to the publishers and students.

Hard economic times often call for drastic measures to maintain a stable monetary position, be it for an individual or an organization. Yet, even in economic hardship, bounds must be set. Corporate sponsorship for educational facilities, on the surface, seems like an excellent idea, where a large sum of money obtained by putting up a few posters around the school is as a dream come true. However, such is not the case in a real world application.
Education is the key that allows people to move up in the world, seek better jobs, and ultimately succeed fully in life. Education is very important, and no one should be deprived of it. The right to an education is one of the human natural rights which every person should have from youth to when they are old. Human natural rights are fundamental privileges acquire from the rational nature of man and the natural moral. Right to an education is an inalienable right for it cannot be renounced or transferred because it is necessary for the fulfillment of one’s primitive obligation.
For long periods of time, education has been important to the development the different scientific, moral and ethical fields of the humanity. In addition, it has been recognized by some governments as a human right, but in some places around the world; education is not accessible for everyone. Many people believe that having an educational system without any cost would mean a better educated society, whereas others argue that this would not be possible. To develop a better educated society, governments should establish a totally free education system for the following three reasons.
Education is a elemental human right and essential for all other human rights. It is a powerful tool by which socially and economically marginalized children and adults can lift themselves out of poverty. It also consists of the right to freedom of education. Freedom of education is the right given to human beings to have access to the education of their preference without any constrictions. Right to education is a human right recognized by the United Nations. It includes the entire compulsion to eliminate inequity at all levels of the educational system.
