My concept of intellectual perseverance is rooted in the ideal that a good leader should have a winning spirit and determination to overcome all obstacles. This type of leadership is not for the weak of heart. He or she should set the pace for others and be dogmatic in their pursuit for success. Thus, the leader should be strong willed, tenacious, and able to apply intellectual perseverance as a mean of setting the standard. What is Intellectual Perseverance? While are numerous ways to define intellectual perseverance, such as my personal definition, the official definition is exceptionally detailed. This keeps a good leader honest and hinders him from becoming a leader who portrays a false image of himself to the public. Intellectual Autonomy A leader with autonomy stands firm in his beliefs and values, and he examines them to confirm that they are of sound reason are rational to believe (Criticalthinking.org, 2014). Thinking for oneself and taking charge of his thought processes is essential. A leader who does this is committed to analyzing when to conform to other schools of thought and beliefs. Intellectual Integrity A leader with this trait recognized the need to be true to him own thinking and consistent with the intellectual standards that he sets. He holds himself to the same stands as he would expect others to adhere to. Intellectual Perseverance Finally, intellectual perseverance, as mentioned in the previous definition, is the cognizance of the needing to use intellectual truths and insights, while disregarding adversities, frustrations, and complications. Keeping a calm, cool, and collected attitude, even when curveballs are thrown, signifies a strong leader. When an egregious amount of errors or flaws occur during a project, a poor leader will be effected by it negatively and lose control of their team. A poor leader gets frustrated, angry, or even depressed during periods of struggles. An effective leader, notwithstanding, remains composed, and they will not allow even the worst of setbacks to affect their leadership style.
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others” (Welch). Leadership is inspiring others to learn more, do more, and become more. Ineffective fail to possess certain characteristics which effective leaders do. Willingness to help others, selflessness, and strictness; these are the qualities of a both good and effective leader. Without these qualities, leadership would fail and being a leader would mean nothing.
In Gerald Graff's article "Hidden Intellectualism," he discusses his ideas about intellectualism and traditional academic thinking. Graff contends street smarts are as important, if not more important, than academic prowess. Graff feels challenging students on topics that are interesting to them is the best way to improve their academic performance.

By Gary Gutting explores the theme of books and teachers that will help us achieve intellectualism. These two essays may be different, but contain similar ideas such as intellectualism. They both state that is is important, but they interpret it differently. Gutting describes intellect as something a person can achieve through reading and studying, which make you book smart, while Graff mentions that you don 't have to be book smart in order to be intelligent. Philip Dow’s Virtuous Minds has given me insight on what it means to have good intellectual character. In chapter 1, Dow discusses intellectual courage. This was the most important and insightful chapter that I have read thus far. I do not think I ever considered how important intellectual courage is to all aspects of life. In order to gain a deeper knowledge of life or be “fair-minded”, we must be willing to consider arguments that are different from our own.
A leader needs to “believe” in oneself and have the confidence that whatever you say will excite and what you do can motivate others. You must be optimistic about what you do, do have some relevance for being in existence. Believe it or not, “leadership begins with you”.
Based on my own experiences, having the intellect to wiggle out of a situation is not enough to show exemplary leadership qualities. I have experienced this first hand. I was presented a situation in a group, where I happened to not be the leader. The leader was intellectual, logical, and wise, however he provided no direction. This group project was put on all of us, where we individually had our parts that we had to fulfill, however; the leader was not a pathfinder, therefore he could not give us direction on what to do for our parts.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Literary translation can be described in many ways. In the first place we can think of it as retelling, in that we take a Korean story and tell it in English. In retelling the story we make it public. This means we have an audience, either readers of our translation or listeners of a public reading of that translation. Public readings are an important way of disseminating a translation. And in the case of Korea, readings have a special relevance. In premodern times improvised poems were often shared during gatherings of literati. Even today poetry readings are not uncommon in Korea (though readings of fiction are rare--a vestige of the greater esteem traditionally attached to poetry by Koreans?). Retelling is an especially apt approach to translation when we translate an author such as Pak Wan-sô, whose narrators often sound as if they are speaking directly to the reader.
To be a good leader you must be strong-minded, but more importantly you have to be intelligent. Someone who is smart can back up his or her statements with fact. If someone is intelligent people are more likely to listen to their ideas before someone who is less intelligent. If one is intelligent they have the ability to instruct a group properly. And if one is intelligent they can organize all of the groups projects better the a less intelligent person.
Self-confidence is one of the most important qualities that determine a good leader. Self-confidence is the belief in oneself and of one’s powers and abilities. It is the attitude that people possess that allows them to have positive views and to trust their own abilities. Self-confidence is an extremely important attribute to have. Leadership is all about having the confidence to make decisions. If they are afraid to make and commit to their decisions, all of the communication and authority they have will make no difference. They need to guts to motivate others, and if they waver even slightly, their followers will start to doubt them. An example of leaders having self-confidence is the students at school who organized their own clubs. They have the courage to pitch new ideas, and are not afraid to talk to other students about it. Teachers are natural born leaders. Everyday, they have to face hundreds of students to lead them onto the correct path through learning. Without self-confidence, they will not be able to do their job.
Finally, leaders are able to keep everything in perspective. They invest themselves fully but also are able to keep their priorities in order. As a child I never understood anything that my mother did or said but now that I am an adult I realize that my mother had a valid reason for everything she did. My entire childhood my mother has molded me to become a great leader and all the lessons that my mother has taught me I can spread the knowledge to my children.
