I was born in Mobile, AL. My date of birth is January 4, 1979. I was raised in San Diego, California. Most of my life I have been surrounded by a diverse culture of people. The role of academia and social issue are two topics I will be discussing personal experiences about my intellectual autobiography. Therefore, I have been inspired by educators in my community to discover a new path to improve education. Social issues has impacted economic and housing developments, jobs, and environmental resources. My career path will led me to teach, counsel, help foster families in need, and improve the community I live in. The role of academia has evolved around in society to be a better citizen. Education is an important part of my future. As I come closer to receiving my degree, I can certain understand the value of being self-directed, motivated, appreciative to live in the United States. I understand that everyone is not privileged to attend a state university or college. I respect the hardships my parents have sacrificed for me to live in a better tomorrow. Education has changed drastically, especially with different school systems wanted to be their own district. I recall attending school nine months out the …show more content…
Some social issues are health care, immigration rights, low poverty, crime, and environment. It’s difficult for me to understand why health care is so expensive. It’s a lifestyle I have to have as a citizen, but my government wants me to spend about 25% of my payroll check just to receive sick and wellness visits. It effects women and children. Yes, there’s free health clinics, but the services were not as good, because I didn’t have a paid health plan through my employer. The cheapest healthcare plan is through education. Unfortunately, because of my age, I was dropped by 25 years old. The right to have healthcare affects families sending their children to school
As a child, I struggled in school and I found that the more my literacies overlapped, the more I learned. There was a point when I worried that I would never become anything. I had not really thought about how I got to the point I am now, but looking back, I can see that somethings made a big impact on my life, education and the way I learn. Social movements and cultural events as well as Historical and political events influence all of our literacies and education starting at birth. The easiest way for me to express this is going through the events in my life as they affected me.

In the summer of 1998 my family fled the newly created independent country of Croatia (Former-Yugoslavia) to the United States. My parents came here in hopes of finding a better life as the economy was still recovering from Croatia’s war of independence. We first settled in Amarillo, Texas for a few months. We traveled around the states for a year or so looking for other refugees. After some searching my parents decided to move to Connecticut as it offered the best incentives for refugees. Listening to stories about this time of my life has given me a chance to appreciate the help we received from various government programs that settled us, clothed us, fed us, and helped us become independent American citizens. Now I want to give back and the best way I know to do this is by teaching the future generations of Americans.
In 2012, the rate of graduation stays low as the rate of attendance goes up at community colleges. People say that they go to college to get a better education and to have more opportunities, but we all know in the long run it’s so they can make more money. In order to learn you must be willing to work hard, Confucius once said, “You cannot open a book without learning.” I believe that this is true because at some point you have to read something about what you are working on. In 2014 of 2.9 million high school students who graduated, 2.0 million of them went on to college to get a higher level of education. In addition to the promise of a higher salary, college offers a myriad of benefits to students who participate in the academia experience.
“A good education is a foundation for a better future.” ~ Elizabeth Warren. The reasoning behind why I want to go to college is to better my future. I am considered one of the first generation in my family to go to college, putting a lot of meaning behind why I believe I should go on to a different path. From a very young age I have always held high expectations of myself, even of the numerous changes in careers I had obtained an interest in. I have always envisioned myself going to college because I certainly value education. I believe that the more education I receive, the more valuable I am to this generation of the work force. Not only does my passion of learning hold place in the reasoning behind why I want to go to college, but because of my role models growing up. My parents both encourage me on a daily basis to go to college, and have encouraged my initiative to seek more in life. My father once explained that he once had this opportunity to receive a free ride to college but decided to stay home and start a family. He of course never looked back or regretted his decision because if not I wouldn 't be here today, but he encouraged me to take on these amazing offers and
In my humble opinion, higher education institutions, change the world for the better, helping people to be encouraged, and more optimistic about life in general. As a person from an uneducated family, an education beyond high school has always been just a dream until now. As a whole, in the United States, higher education is seen as a necessity for most people to be successful, to be gained through university as apposed to self-taught. According to the president of Harvard, Drew Gilpin Faust, "Higher education generates broader economic growth as well as individual success." (Faust, 2010). Providing students with the knowledge to have a successful career, is not the only accomplishment of higher education, it also enables students to see the world with more clarity and understanding. Therefore, creating a more dynamic and open
What is a social problem? A social problem is a problem that affects more than one person in a society. A social problem disrupts the daily life and well being of people in a society. Ryan described a social problem as a problem that affects humans. If a problem affects a human being than it is a social problem. “’What human problem is not a social problem?’” (Ryan 9). Social Problems affect a major part of many individuals’ rights. Some examples of social problems are: sexism, racism, homophobia, and income inequality. In this essay I will be focusing on income inequality and whether this issue is a social problem or an individual problem.

I received a voice mail today from Sean McKnight stating he has a meeting setup with Ken Barber and some other individuals on the executive board of Illinois Joining Forces (IJF). I felt it was my duty to inform the group about some important facts that Mr. McKnight is very good at hiding. I met Mr. McKnight during my time at NIU. I just served my time as the NIU Veterans Club president and decided it was time to let someone else take the helm. Matthew Galloway the current Veterans Club president introduced the club to Sean McKnight at a veterans club meeting. Sean came in and presented himself as a seasoned veteran’s advocate who has many connections throughout the state of Illinois and Washington D.C. He promoted his organization that he was starting Warriors Guarding Warriors as a revolutionary concept that has not been thought of as for yet throughout the veteran community. Finally, he offered his services to any veterans having trouble with VA benefits or the medical process. At the time we did not know that he was not officially certified to help veterans, and nor did he actually know the proper process or paper work needed to help our fellow veterans. Sean offered to be the Veterans Clubs mentor. The club held a vote and
First time out of the wire and on patrol but not with first platoon, First Sergeant moved me to second platoon just the day before. The night insertion that we conducted that night went without a hitch. The soldiers that were in my truck took turns throughout the night behind the weapons system which was an M-240B. At zero eight in the morning of the next day patrols started around the bazaar by the dismounted troops. I was coupled with the PL* and conducted familiarization patrols so that I could get eyes on the sector from the map that was issued to me the night we left. Starting off at the far limits of the sector we went to position E (east) and was instructed on what the sectors were as was the activities that had been conducted the previous
Moving from a highly diverse community to a less diverse community has to be the weirdest yet interesting culture shock I ever had to deal with. As a young child, I did not know about the outside world. I thought everyone rides the bus or the metro, graffiti on the wall is normal and traffic wouldn’t matter as much since everything I needed was within walking distance sometimes. There were shocking things I learned once I moved to Nebraska.
From a young age I have known how important the value of education is. I love going to school everyday because I know that I will be exposed to something new. Learning new things truly excites me. One of the reasons I choose to apply to St. Louis University was because of its Jesuit heritage, knowing how education is a top priority for the order. Education can be the saving grace that gets someone out of a bad situation or can even save their life. I am a very independent person and enjoy doing things for myself and not having to rely on others to do it instead. Education to me is also personal and self driven, This is why expanding mine will provide me the choice to do with it whatever I feel I can.
It all started when Ms. McCrystal began a lesson on how evolutionary changes impacted the lives of other organisms. Allie knew something interesting was going to happen, because Ms. McCrystal was the most engaging teacher on team 8-1. The very next day Ms. McCrystal had all of her Students do an assignment on the five fingers of evolution. Then she announced that the class was going on a class trip to the science museum.
...rked fears of the return of the university system geared toward the wealthy. Society needs the higher educated, because the educated do serve a purpose. Not everyone is as blessed as the fortunate few to have obtained a higher education. Society needs professionals (doctors, lawyers, and engineers). It also needs artiest, essay writing professors, philosophers and politicians. In certain ways the educated owe it to the society they came from to make it a better, more diverse living environment, for everyone including themselves.
