Brief Autobiography In the summer of 1998 my family fled the newly created independent country of Croatia (Former-Yugoslavia) to the United States. My parents came here in hopes of finding a better life as the economy was still recovering from Croatia’s war of independence. We first settled in Amarillo, Texas for a few months. We traveled around the states for a year or so looking for other refugees. After some searching my parents decided to move to Connecticut as it offered the best incentives for refugees. Listening to stories about this time of my life has given me a chance to appreciate the help we received from various government programs that settled us, clothed us, fed us, and helped us become independent American citizens. Now I want to give back and the best way I know to do this is by teaching the future generations of Americans. …show more content…
I remember how mathematics was incredibly difficult for me and because of this I can relate to the struggles students have with math. For a teacher to be successful they need to create relevance for the students. I understand how to relate the various topics of mathematics to topics of the world, which for most students is difficult to do, For example, I remember at the CREC School I was observing at, there was a student of Bosnian decent who was having trouble understanding how to read a map of the United States. So I showed her a map of Bosnia with the same map key, and we discerned what everything meant (where the capital was, where the ocean was, major port cities were, etc…). She caught on quickly as she already had an understanding of Bosnia and it quickly transferred over to the map of the thirteen colonies. This skill is easily transferrable to mathematics by using relevant, real-world examples of concepts learned by

I was born in Mobile, AL. My date of birth is January 4, 1979. I was raised in San Diego, California. Most of my life I have been surrounded by a diverse culture of people. The role of academia and social issue are two topics I will be discussing personal experiences about my intellectual autobiography. Therefore, I have been inspired by educators in my community to discover a new path to improve education. Social issues has impacted economic and housing developments, jobs, and environmental resources. My career path will led me to teach, counsel, help foster families in need, and improve the community I live in.

Although I was technically not born into a Christian family, my parents were saved when I was just age 3 and dedicated their lives to fulltime ministry. At age five I moved with my family to Knoxville, Tennessee to live and serve as missionaries on a church camp. We remained there for a short time before my father heard the call to become a pastor. We moved to Texas where my dad then graduated from seminary. The first church he pastored was where I accepted Christ as my savior and was baptized at age eight. Although this happened at a young age, I know that Jesus saved me and began to work in my life from that point on. In the middle of my third grade year we moved to Grand Prairie, Texas where my dad pastored a church for the next five years. Here I spent my time serving in the nursery and attending every youth event possible. This was home and it was where I believed I was closest to Jesus. However, God began to test my faith in ways I would have never expected.
As a secondary subject, society often views mathematics a critical subject for students to learn in order to be successful. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.
I was raised by both my parents while growing up. My parents barely finished high school and never went to college so they were not the type of parents who pushed college careers nor did they have any sort of college fund set aside for us. They always helped with homework but never pushed us to do better. Now that they see my accomplishments from attending college they are very proud of me and supportive for me to finish. My mom even went back to college after seeing me and my sister do it, and she got an accounting degree at the age of 40. My parents came from poor families and not many college graduates. We often had no spending money or even good running vehicles but they always gave us love and we were happy with all of the small things we had. My parents used the permissive parenting style, at least for me and my sister; they never really used any type of punishments. They would tell us we were grounded from something but the next day we would be doing the things we were grounded from. We were always nurtured and my parents were easy to talk to. My dad taught us many things from riding a bike to driving a car; he never gave up on us and always gave words of wisdom. There were times when were yelled at and even spanked a few times, but the good times always overcame those bad. I have 3 sisters and 1 brother who are all younger than me. Being the oldest of 5 children had its good and bad occasions. Since I was the oldest I always was given first option on things like movies, where to eat and who got to play with what toys. I was also faced with a lot of responsibility being the oldest, I was expected to watch the other kids a lot to make sure they did not get hurt. Some days I felt more like a mother than a child but they looked up to me and listened to me so I felt good. To this day I still look after them and make sure they are doing the right things and doing well in school. I think that the "birth order" material is pretty close to describing all of us.
As with every academic subject, there are a variety of strategies for teaching mathematics to school-aged students. Some strategies seem to be better than others, especially when tackling certain topics. There is the direct instruction approach where students are given the exact tools and formulas they need to solve a problem, sometimes without a clear explanation as to why. The student is told to do certain steps in a certain order and in turn expects to do them as such at all times. This leaves little room for solving varying types of problems. It can also lead to misconceptions and students may not gain the full understanding that their teachers want them to have. So how can mathematics teachers get their students to better understand the concepts that are being taught?
Eff was absolutely certain that if she didn’t get this mission right, she was to be beheaded. She’d never heard of the royal family to be very lenient, so if this person she had to save had even a scratch, she was sure to be a goner.
It was a dark, and rainy day. I was in my Grandpa John’s attic, and rummaging around. Then, all of the sudden, I turned around, and there was my Grandpa. He was holding a picture frame, and crying the most I’ve ever seen. I was walking over to him in a heartbeat. I looked at the picture, and realized it was my grandma Janet. She died before I was ever even born, but I had still seen her many, many times before. I eventually just walked away, thinking he would stop crying. I picked up a pair of old black binoculars, and he immediately stopped crying. “STOP!” he cried. I immediately dropped the pair of binoculars.”What?!?!” I screamed, as my heart skipped a beat.”Sorry, I just wasn’t sure if they were the sa-” and there he was, just thinking. I knew I had to ask him what was wrong, but I was afraid I would make him unhappy.
“Nope, that’s wrong. Come on, you know this. The question isn’t that hard,” she grumbled in frustration. “Who’s next?”
My life has been a roller coaster ride with a lot of up and down moments. My roller coaster ride helped to realize what I wanted to study in college. I feel that I have a strong passion about psychology; I want to learn everything that I could, so I could be able to assist people. Everyone is passionate about a certain aspects of life, but I’m very passionate about my career. A passion is a strong feeling and sometime a controllable emotion that can make a difference in someone work ethic. During my career I want to be able to make a difference in other people lives. My passion for helping people came from my family experience, educational, work, and career goals. I feel that the passion that I have for helping people is
The crisp, cold November air hit me like a truck as I opened the library doors, making an overdue exit after practically two hours of studying.
I have a very fulfilling feeling about what I have been able to accomplish in my life so far. I want the absolute best for myself and those close to me. I often go above and beyond to help those around me succeed and be the best version of themselves that they can possibly be.
I’m an Aquarian by birth, but I’ve never been one to put too much emphasis on astrological signs. However, I am a water baby. I was born and raised on the Gulf Coast of Florida. I learned to swim before I could walk, I learned to fish before I could talk, and I learned to ski before I was riding a bike. I can’t remember a time when water wasn’t a part of my life. I grew up canoeing the bays and lakes and tubing the rivers and creeks. I even took up surfing for a few years until I got cracked in the head and almost drown. I learned a lot about myself because of that environment, and I believe it truly shaped who I am today.
