Psychoanalytic art therapists must understand that the approach is symbolically meaningful to children who undergo this type of art therapy. The creative process is the most important aspect of psychoanalytic art therapy because it targets children’s unconscious thoughts as a means for symbolic expression. The developmental approach involves a substantial understanding of the stages of child development. This is important for developmental art therapists to understand because they design their treatment plans according to the developmental stages of children. Because art stimulates the right hemisphere of the brain, it triggers growth in the cognitive and emotional domains. The adaptive approach involves normalization, which means helping children with special needs to experience life just as children without special needs experience it. Another aspect of the adaptive approach is that adaptations can be made for all children so that their art-making experience may be maximized to its fullest potential. Adaptive art therapists must be aware of children’s unique, individual strengths in order to help them succeed. The cognitive-behavioral approach involves a substantial understanding of higher mental processes. In terms of the physical environment, working in a large classroom space may affect students’ behavior and be a source of distractions. Therefore, a smaller classroom environment with fewer distractions may be more appropriate. In terms of adaptation in the art media and tools, there are some instances where students have difficulties grasping paintbrushes or drawing pencils. As a solution, these tools can be physically altered in various ways to accommodate for the needs of individual children. Some children may benefit from using alternative tools such as sponges or plastic squeeze bottles for applying paint. Students who are not able to use their hands may learn how to hold the tools using their toes. The students who have difficulties applying paint may also have difficulties applying glue. They can use the same strategies for applying glue or may benefit from using glue sticks or staplers instead. There also are variations of scissors for students who have difficulty handling them. These variations include easy-grip scissors and double-handled scissors, which allow adults to guide students with cutting. Students who cannot use scissors at all may need to have items pre-cut for them
We are constantly being bombarded with visual culture throughout every hour of the day, though at times it may seem overwhelming and desensitizing, it is only getting more prevalent. Paul Duncum is an art educator who is corporating these aspects of visual culture in the classroom everyday and also teaching his students to do this as well. I have talked about Paul Duncum educational history, his contributions to art education, his teaching philosophy, and how I can use his beliefs and teachings in my future as an art educator. With my new found knowledge of Paul Duncum and his teaches, I hope, as a future educator to follow in his footsteps of incorporation of our society’s importance of visual art in my classroom.

Art is intended for all to enjoy and learn from. Through an art curriculum; phonics, mathematics, and readiness skills to name a few can be learned through an art curriculum. While observing a few days, I noticed most of the students enjoyed playing in the blocks area and crafts. I helped during numerous projects and taught different concepts. While teaching, most of the child were well-behaved. Others were easily distracted with other areas in the classroom. Once the students finished the projects, the teacher hung up their creations around the room to display their hard work. One of the characteristics that I noticed on her portrait was her age. You can see lines near her nose and cheeks. Her face and neck were made out of yew wood. Her eyes were made out of Alabaster and Ebony, making her eyes as natural as possible. She wore a crown of two feathers and some jewelry. The earrings looked like they were made out of gold and some type of blue stone. Some of the crown pieces were chipped off, so you can see that she was wearing another headdress

Smithrim and Upitis (2005) conducted research spanning three years to investigate if students benefited from participation in the Learning Through the Arts (LTTA) program. The LTTA program aimed to revitalize elementary education by increasing engagement of students through arts integrated curriculum developed by professional teaching artists in collaboration with classroom teachers. The researchers randomly selected 650 students from 15 elementary schools across Canada that indicated they would be willing to participate in the LTTA program for a full three years and select 20 control schools for comparison. The researchers used two control situations for comparison.

Art Education is not always valued in school settings. Although some may see it as an unnecessary use of school funding, there are many who believe it is beneficial to students in more ways than one. There are many different studies that have been conducted to test the effects that art education has on school-aged children. Some studies have proven that art education can help students to improve in other academic areas. In a journal article from Ohio State University’s “Theory in Practice,” Karen A Hamblen states, “There are linkages between art learning and learning in other subjects areas and that art study can promote creative behaviors, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement.” It has also been found that the arts can teach children better self-regulatory strategies, and even foster more confidence and self-efficacy in school which relates to confidence in academics. Overall, art education in schools has been very beneficial and has proven to ignite creativity, confidence, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement in students.
