Little Red Riding Hood by Anne Faundez is a fairytale story about a naive little girl who finds her self in a situation with the Big Bad Wolf. While Little Red Riding Hood was on her way to her grandmother’s house, she runs into the wolf that wants to eat her and her grandmother. The rime patterns that I will teach and offer a rationale for teaching are the patterns –ing and –ang. I have choses to teach these two patterns together because these two patterns are only different by one sound. In this instance, -ing and –ang only differ by the vowel sound. The pattern of –ing and –ang consists of a vowel and two consonant (VCC). The two patterns are similar because they contain the same consonants, which is –ng. Show the students the words riding and hiding are restate that they both contain the –ing rime pattern. Tell the students that you are going to ask them to help you make more words that contain the –ing pattern. Ask, “Can you think of any other words that rhyme with riding and hiding?” As children make suggestions, segment the onset and rime. This book has discussion points in which the children may ask questions and use their problem solving skills. Susan Sherwood shares in the article Good Books for Dramatic Storytelling for Young Children that “the best ones appeal to children's lives and interests, such as families, animals, communities and humor”, Corduroy fits this criteria children love stuffed animals, and they will be interested in knowing how the little girl gets to take Corduroy home
In Chapter 2 of Children’s Books in Children’s Hands: A Brief Introduction to their Literature, the authors talk about the 12 main elements of a literary work: genre, plot, setting, characterization, theme, point of view, intersexuality, tone, mood, style, voice, and the stance of the implied reader (Temple, Martinez, and Yokota 24). All of these literary elements capture the reader’s imagination and creates a successful piece of literature. However, the authors stress the importance of genre in Chapter 2, so I will briefly go over the different types of genres there are in literature and how it affects the readers greatly.
Sipe highlights five different expressive engagements—dramatizing, talking back, inserting, and taking over—that children portray during story book read- alouds. He believes that teachers must encourage these behaviors in children because it shows participation and it inspires children to take over the story. Some of these expressive engagements are reasonable while some serve as a disfavor to children’s learning. On page 482, he gives instruction on how teachers can implement the expressive engagements in their classroom. Sipe claims, “the first type of expressive engagement, dramatizing, can be encouraged through dramatic reenactment” (481). This can be problematic for fairy tales such as “The Juniper Tree”. This story about a stepmother killing her stepson by beheading him then cooking him in a stew, and a little boy turned into a singing bird who then later kills his murderer by “…dropping a millstone on her head and crush[ing] her to death” (252) can be gruesome for children to dramatize. Another expressive engagement that Sipe mentions is “inserting”. Sipe claims that if children are encouraged to insert themselves or other people around them into the story that they are reading, they can exercise their power over the tales. Through this process, Sipe claims “children in process of becoming one with the story, to the extent of assuming their stance as fellow characters with equal agency and presence in the story” (478). The story of the little boy in “The Juniper Tree” suggest a different view about mechanically inserting characters in a story. The little boy must learn about what each of his family members did to contribute to his death. During my observation in Mrs. Herd’s class I taught a phonemic lesson to the students. The phonemic lesson I chose for Mrs. Herd’s class was rhyming. During this lesson I taught the students how to identify rhyming words and how to rhyme with the ending sound /at/. The students will benefit from this lesson by gaining the ability to recognize and generate rhyming words. The strategy I used for this lesson is called “The Hungry Thing”. In this strategy the teacher reads a book to the students called The Hungry Thing by Jan Slepian and Ann Seidler.

These are the first three lines of Nalo Hopkinson's fairy tale “Riding the Red”, a modern adaptation of Charles Perrault's “Little Red Riding Hood”. Perrault provided a moral to his fairy tales, the one from this one is to prevent girls from men's nature. In Hopkinson's adaptation, the goal remains the same: through the grandmother biographic narration, the author advances a revisited but still effective moral: beware of wolfs even though they seem innocent.

Though the evils of the world may discourage us from reaching our full potential, fairytales such as Little Snow-White by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm teach us that good will always triumph over evil. As many tales of its kind, Little Snow-White uses a number of literary devices to attract a younger audience and communicate to them a lesson or moral that will remain with them throughout their lives. Since children have such an abstract stream of thought, it is vital to use language and devices that will appeal to them as to keep them interested in the story.
Explain to the student that you will be reading a fiction story and that we will be gathering facts as we read the story together. Although it is a fiction, book we still will be able to identify some facts about ants as we read.
After the teacher is sure the students understand that books have themes that are far beyond the eye can see. The teacher will have the students split into groups of three. The teacher will hand out to the students a sheet with these words and phrases listed: corruption, power, human rights, racism, tolerance, environmental stewardship, greed, pollution, war, anti-Semitism, Hitler, Holocaust, Cold War. The teacher will ask the students if they are familiar with all of these terms, and if not, the teacher will define any of the words they don 't know. Each group will have to decipher the theme of one of the given Dr. Seuss books. The books are Horton Hears a Who, Yertle the Turtle, The Sneetches, The Lorax, and The Butter Battle Book. I knew right away that I wanted to center my project on the story called Borreguita and the Coyote by Verna Aardma and illustrated by Petra Mathers. My inspiration for wanting to do this project reminds me of myself growing up always coming up being a trickster and clever little girl and will be suitable for my targeted audience of second graders. Young students will find this book easy to connect with because we all try getting out of a sticky situation once in a while and know they will enjoy this tale of a clever little lamb that outsmarts a hungry coyote.
