How many people do you know that have related a positive relationship with music therapy? As for me, I known tons of everyday people who use this great gift of music to come through some of the most complicated times. Music is vocal or instrumental sounds, or both put together combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. But simmering it down to one definition is really hard for some. I feel that music is whatever you make it out to be. Something this great has been formed into a mechanism where it can help millions of people cope from a plethora of problems. I’ve decided to choose what I believe is a very prevalent way of music relating my major, which is Psychology. Music therapy have been around for years but wasn’t necessarily founded until later in time. One of the first-degree programs for someone who wanted to go into the business of Music Therapy was first formed in 1994 at Michigan State University. Music Therapy specializes in some treatment of children with a wide range of diagnoses and/or special needs. With children, music therapy provides a unique variety of music experiences in an intentional and developmentally appropriate manner to effect changes in a child’s behavior and facilitate development of his/her communication, social/emotional, sensory-motor, and/or cognitive skills. Music therapy enhances the quality of life. It involves relationships between a qualified therapist and child; between one child and another; between child and family; and between the music and the participants.
