It was a beautiful morning in Halifax , Nova Scotia . All was quiet and peaceful until about 8:45 AM when 2 ships had collided. The SS-Mont-Blanc (A french ammunition ship) and the SS Imo(Belgian Relief Ship) had collided together so far starting a small fire. For approximately 20 minutes the people of Halifax had gathered around watching the 2 ships until shortly after 9 AM the SS Mont-Blanc had exploded. (pause to welcome) Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, the day the world changed was December 6th 1917. (move into historical material outlining the events leading up to the big day, one paragraph) The famous Halifax harbour was busier then ever as the harbour was served as a gathering point for ships being escorted to Europe as World War …show more content…
1 was coming to an end. The SS-Mont-Blanc coming back from Eurple was loaded with three thousand tons of explosive materials such as picric acid , TNT , high octane gasoline , and gun cotton was just entering Halifax harbour while the SS-Imo was headed out of the harbour , The 2 ships were headed in the same direction (Face to face from eachother) , They were both sailing south through the narrows which is the harbours tightest section.
The SS-Imo moving faster then it should was supposed to be passing through the right rather then the left. The Imo then hit the starboard of the Mont-Blanc as the Mont-Blanc was trying to change its position. For 20 minutes the Mont-Blac burned releasing thick black smoke out into the sky. This attracted the people of halifax , including children on there way to school , many residents were looking out of there window to watch this horrifying scene. This also caught the attention of a team of firefighters and other ships wanting to put the fire out. Many did not understand the dangers of the fire until the ship finally exploded. The explosion caused massive destruction in halifax such as 1600 buildings destroyed , 12,000 houses destroyed , 6000 people homeless , approximately 2,000 dead and 9,000 with non-fatal
injuries. The water around the ship vaporized and caused a huge tsunami wave which flooded the streets of Halifax and Dartmouth and swept people into the Halifax Harbour where they drowned. Also more fires started and spread around the city. The next day , Halifax got hit with a huge snow storm that would last for a week and is recorded to be the worst snow storm in Halifax history. Finally, The tragic events that occurred on December 6th 1917 are still remember by the people in Halifax. In fact the city still has not recovered all of the damages that were caused by the explosion. The Halifax Explosion is one of the largest man-made explosions ever occurred. What I find sad is the citizens of Canada remember the sinking of the Titanic but a large population still do not know the horrifying events which occurred on December 6th 1917. This is to honour those people who died in the Halifax explosion , May you all Rest In Peace.
The 1917 Explosion in Halifax Harbor was one of the most powerful explosions in history. The author explains this very clearly in the text. First, you can tell that it was a very powerful explosion because of the title “The Shattered Sky”. Before the Explosion she expressed that, “the two towns were buzzing with activity” (Lewis, 6). This means the two towns were very normal and busy. Lewis also says, “soft smoked curled the chimneys as mothers served up steaming bowls of oatmeal. Children gathered their school books, and fathers pulled on their coats and headed off to work.” (Lewis, 6). In that quote, Lewis is painting a descriptive picture to show us what’s going on.
An example of one nursing officer’s experience under fire is from Sister Kelly’s diary from the Casualty Clearing Station at the Western Front....
On the night of March 5th, it is believed that a small group of boys began taunting a British soldier. Over the boys’ nonsense, the soldier battered one of his oppressors with his musket. Soon after the alleged incident a crowd of about fifty or sixty people surrounded the frightened solider. The enraged crowd of people sounded the soldier, encouraging him to call for backup. Soon after calling for help, seven soldiers along with Captain Preston...
Twenty lives were lost, including two of the striker’s wives and eleven children, but only one of these lives belonged to the National Guard. With this in mind, it can be debated whether or not this event should be considered a battle or a massacre. Some have argued that, because of the striker’s retaliation, the event should be considered a battle, but because of previous abuse and the guard’s disregard for who they were firing at it and careless destruction, it should be considered a massacre.
On November 19, President Lincoln went to the battlefield to dedicate it as a military cemetery. He spoke for a short period of time delivering what is called the Gettysburg Address, surprising many present in the audience with its shortness and leaving others quite unimpressed, but over time the speech has come to symbolize democracy as we know it today (Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia Vol. 11 385).
The drought was near historic high levels for the time of year. In the moments before the entrapment on of the squads and the crew boss trainee were working with a fire engine and its three person crew when a spot fire erupted right next to the road. in the year 1954, the United States was changing rapidly. President Eisenhower, a Republican, was in the midst of his first term. Eisenhower had just announced to the world that the United States had in fact developed and successfully tested the first hydrogen bomb some two years prior. Mamie Eisenhower christened the Nautilus, which was the first submarine to run on nuclear power. The great court decision, “Brown vs. the Board of Education,” called for the integration of the country’s public schools. Arkansas and Alabama refused to integrate and President Eisenhower was forced to send the 101st Airborne Division to integrate the schools of these states. The phrase “Under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance. Eighteen-year olds were shouting, “If we are old enough to fight and die for our country, why can’t we vote?” The teens got a bill into the house but it was turned away by the senate.
Anyone would agree that 115 years is a long time. Considering that the Australian flag that we know and love today has been around around for that long, we can all agree it is time for a change. Good Morning Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull and notable guests, today I stand in front of you to show you my vision for a more updated version of the Australian flag.
As the hill town began to be torn apart like a battle ship at sea, by fire shells, the troops moved from the barrack tents in the orchard into the now crowded bedrooms of the old nunnery. Sections of the chapel were blown up. Parts of the top storey of the villa crumbled under the explosions. (12)
Culture is a way of life that is current and it represents who you are. It's a lot of things dealing with culture, but the main three I'm going to focus on are: food, music, and events. I'm going to talk about what dish Louisiana is most known for. How everyone comes to Louisiana to celebrate these most known events. And also, how we live in the same state but people grew up listening to different music.
A. According to the history section of the Casa de Shenandoah official website, the original parcel of land was purchased by the Newton family in 1966
One of the spectators noticed a pale pink glow in the lower center of the ship. Everyone began to become intense because they had a feeling that the glow was not suppose to be there. A few seconds later that section of the airship exploded! All the onlookers, of course, backed away rapidly, but were still close as the entire Hindenburg airship, and mostly all of its passengers caught fire.
Street-ball-an informal type of basketball usually played in urban areas such as parking lots, playgrounds, etc. Think of New York. What comes to mind? Statue of Liberty, 9/11, Chinatown? Not for me. New York has 55 championships in professional sports. That’s the most wins any state has. So when I think of New York sports come to mind. New York is also in the top 10 for best basketball state according to ESPN. That includes the Knicks, Nets, Saint Johns, and the Globetrotters. New York also has another special trait to them. New York invented street ball. Street ball is now being played all around the world. New York also holds the two most recognizable street ball courts in the world. Rucker Park and West 4th street otherwise known as “The
“A great cloud of smoke was rising from this blazing fire, and shrapnel and cannonballs flew screaming through the air in all directions”( In Darkness pg.243) That excerpt is explaining the carnage that was happening as the entire British armory was obliterated by the Haitians. As this explosion happened warriors from both sides of the battle were wounded in every way imaginable. Of the 1 in every 4,000 men unharmed there Toussaint was one of the few on the Haitians side. I may not be as lucky, but I have been very lucky in the past, for example I have rolled a 1,000 lb tractor on top of me and managed to crawl out with only a bruise on my back. Shorty, Toussaint and I may all be alike in my mind but others think
