I am for Radiation in the form of medicine because it has helped a lot of hospitals to cure patients. Radiotherapy, or Radiation therapy, is one of the most common treatment for cancer. They also use x-rays, gamma rays, electrons beams, and protons to weaken or destroy the cancer cells. People normally use Radiotherapy because it has been known to be the most effective in killing the cancer cells. There are other methods to kill cancer but Radiotherapy is the most common procedure. Radiotherapy can be used in surgery or chemotherapy. There is a drug that makes the cancer cells sensitive to the radiation and helps kill the cancer cells better. It is called radiosensitizers and it also uses high energy waves to kill tumor cells without damaging any of the healthy cells. Radiation treatments can come from outside of the body or inside the body near the cancer cells. Patients that get Radiotherapy inside the body normally get the treatment called Brachytherapy. It directly targets the cancer instead of the healthy organs surrounding the cancer cells. Cancer is a disease in which cells multiply out of control and gradually build a mass of tissue called a tumor. There has been a large amount of research dedicated to the treatment and cure of cancer. Several types of treatments have been developed. The following are just some of the major examples of cancer therapy: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, biologic therapy, biorhythms, unconventional treatments, and hyperthermia. Each type of treatment is discussed in detail below.
There are essentially three main types of cancer treatments; surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Surgery allows doctors to effectively remove tumors from a clear plane. Chemotherapy uses drugs to treat the tumor; but often the drugs affect other healthy cells in the process. Using radiation as a treatment can be either precise or vague. Many health stigmas can come from the vague forms of radiation or conventional radiation therapy. Conventional radiation treats both the unhealthy and healthy cells, therefore exposing healthy cells to harmful radiation (Radiation Oncology, 2011, p.6). When healthy cells are exposed to gamma radiation they are also exposed to ionizing radiation. The ionization can cause “breakage of chemical bonds or oxidization (addition of oxygen atoms)” in a cell; the main impact of this is on a cell’s DNA, if two strands of DNA break it can result in “mutations, chromosome aberrations, ...

The patient will be radioactive for a short time. Due to the implant being near the source of cancer a larger dose can be delivered to the patient. “Systemic radiation uses radioactive drugs to treat certain type of cancer.” (American Cancer Society p. 12) The drugs used are called radiopharmaceuticals and can be delivered orally or intravenously. “They collect where the cancer is to give off their radiation and kill the cancer cells.” (American Cancer Society p. 12) After this treatment the patient will be radioactive, and will take a few days to be removed from the patients
Radiation therapists work closely with patients to fight cancer. This group of professionals will determine a specialized treatment plan. There are different types of forms of particles for radiation, for example, protons and waves like x-rays and visible light. These types of radiations are grouped on how much energy they contain because they can cause different effects. A low type of energy radiation can be radio waves and heat, also known as non-ionizing radiation.
Ever since the eighth grade I have been passionate about becoming a radiation therapist. I credit this to a project in which I was required to research two professions in preparation for acceptance into a university. For this project, radiation therapy was suggested to me by a family friend whom was also the administrative director of a cancer center in Miami, Florida. Radiation therapy offers me an opportunity to help individuals who are at one of the most vulnerable and toughest periods of their life. In doing so I am able to be part of a lifesaving team which is very gratifying. Additionally, radiation therapy is a very technically demanding field that combines physics and medicine; two categories of which I am very interested in. In order to learn more about radiation therapy, I began volunteering while in high school at the C. Gordon Griffith Cancer Center at North Shore Medical Center in Miami, Florida. While there, I was able to shadow the dosimetrist as she planned treatments as well as see those treatments in action while shadowing the radiation therapists. I am attending Baton Rouge General School of Radiologic Technology to pursue an Associates degree through Northwestern State University to become a licensed radiologic technologist. I chose this profession because I thoroughly enjoy helping others and making a difference in people’s lives. In order to avoid to much radiation on them we put a lead apron on them and make sure to cover their thyroid which is the most common way of getting cancer when taking an x-ray. In recent years, with the increase in elderly population, more cancer patients with electronic devices such as cardiac pacemaker or internal cardiac defibrillator have been encountered and are treated with radiotherapy. New generation devices are more sensitive to radiation and electromagnetic waves. Device interaction is different according to the type of radiation used. During the radiotherapy planning, the characteristics of the device and the dependence of the patient on the device must be considered. The device should not be in the treatment field, <10 MV energy should be preferred; the cumulative dose should be kept below 2 Gy.
