In the past, music has been used as a form of meditation and therapy. The music dates back all the way to the early modern age, and it is used as a medicine to recognize the links between mind and body (Lund). Musical therapy is a long forgotten therapy that people do not trust but could be a great way to help the body. It has been used all over the world, in different ages, with different types of music. Author Rick Weiss establishes many examples of musical therapy; Witch doctors and other spiritual healers have used drums, bells, and rattles to chase diseases from the body. In Egypt, physician- priest sang medical scriptures. Greek mathematician Pythagoras proposed that music might in some patients restore proper balance among the four senses of humor and their associated temperaments (Weiss). Today musical therapist use drums and maracas to make the music. Even though music therapy is known as a forgotten and “useless” therapy, it can still do incredible things.
Therapy is supposed to help you improve yourself and body, not change it completely. People today don’t understand that musical therapy isn’t a miracle worker, but can improve many things. Autism is a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. Ethan Jones, a young man who has autism, has gone to music therapy since he was 3 years old. Ethan liked the sound, but not the sound of alarms, police car sirens, fire trucks, an ambulance, of just harmonies. Ethan would create music with his therapist. Music therapists are trained too usually sing or play music with the children, to attuned and adapted to the child’s focus. Learning to use musical elements such as dynamics, tempo, timbre, and form, can help this population demonstrate musically what they need to communicate. For example, if they are feeling sad, they might improvise with a slow tempo. If they are angry, their improvisation might be loud and fast.

Yes, life goes on without music, but music has such an impact on our lives. Life is a rollercoaster of emotions and we have music to fit our emotions to be just as we feel. Autism spectrum disorder is a disorder in which many children struggle with. Children, who have ASD, struggle with communication and social interaction.
