Massage increases the circulation of oxygen through the body, helping to heal muscles and reduce tension. The increased circulation can also increase lymphatic drainage helping to rid the body of excess fluids and waste.
The physical manipulation of muscles can break down any scar material, thickening or inflammation of the tissues which can increase mobility and reduce stiffness. The additional mobility and toning can help prevent injury, especially for athletes who use massage therapy as part of their regular training.

Massage therapy is used to treat Raynaud’s disease by treating the fascia tissue of the affected and surrounding areas (Walton 2007). Tension is provoked with chronic conditions or stress that causes the pliability of the fascia to diminish which causes restriction on the blood flow to the limbs. Any restriction in one area of the fascia can hinder blood flow in other regions. Waltons et al. (2007) used massage therapy in a six week study of a female patient with Raynaud’s disease. This study was done in the winter months when Raynaud’s disease effects are at their peak (Walton 2007). Data on daily habits was acquired for three weeks for post therapy comparison. The patient then received five, 45 minute massage therapy treatments for three weeks. The massages focused on the fascia in the arms, neck and back. Massage therapy was found to decrease duration of vasospasms and pain (Walton 2007).

These days muscle pain and spasms have become the most common complaint of many working men and women. To avoid this pain most of them rely upon spa’s to lessen their pain. This nonpharmacological technique helps in reducing the muscle pain as it vasodilates the muscle causing the blood flow to increase at the site of inflammation or injury (Mohammadpour et al. 2014). Due to an increase in the blood supply, the oxygen levels also rise which reduces the amount of inflammatory facilitators and triggers heat shock proteins. With the latest rehabilitation benefits, heat therapy is being used for curing many problems because of its positive feedback.

Once I decided that I wanted to become a physical therapist, I began observation hours. In total, I have completed 117 hours in four different physical therapy settings over the past three years.

The first type is Swedish, this is the most common type of massage, to relax and energize you. Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension. A few techniques within a Swedish massage is circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, bending and stretching. Before and during your Swedish massage session, communication is encouraged with your professional massage therapist so that your massage is customized to your specific needs. The second type is Deep tissue, this is for muscle damage from an injury, such as whiplash or back strain. A deep tissue massage is very similar to Swedish massage, but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus of deep tissue massage is the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia. The third is Sports massage, this helps prevent athletic injury, keep the body flexible and help recovery.
