In the past few decades we have seen many advances in medicine and the treatment of injuries whether they be broken bones or torn ligaments. Along with that, we have seen an increase in massage therapy use. Unfortunately, there are many people who are unaware of the benefit that a massage can have on the body. Whether they are a college student, men, women, pregnant women, elderly, or people with injuries. Most job-related injuries are result in strain on muscles or joints. Massage is still not considered to be common knowledge yet even though most people have a general idea of what a massage is. The general public also assumes that massages are just meant to relax the body but they can do so much more.
Today more than ever we are seeing more

For example, people in pain, stress, pregnant women, and people sitting at desks for long periods of time can benefit. People can see changes right after the first massage such as pain relief or less stress. People might also see more flexibility. People that work at computers all day are prone to some adverse effects such as neck, shoulder, or wrist pain (Dalton, 2014). In this day in age we see up to 15 million people who work at computers in America (Dalton, 2014). By receiving massages people will be able to find a safe, cheap, and effective way to treat …show more content…
When people are unable to attain a full and restful sleep then they may become irritable, less focused, or even hallucinations (Shinde et al, 2014). There are three side effects that are beneficial. These are: release of muscle tension, increased blood circulation and initiation of relaxation response (Shinde et al, 2014). In patients in hospitals that are in ICU (intensive care unit), many of them have disturbed sleep and do not sleep very well (Shinde et al, 2014). In a study done on the 12th April to 15th May 2013 in Jabalpur Hospital and Research Centre and Bhandari Hospital, Jabalpur on 30 patients that were in ICU they performed back massages between 8-9 pm for about 10 minutes (Shinde et al, 2014). Another 30 patients from the same hospitals were in the control group and did not receive a massage. After 3 consecutive days’ patients in the experimental group saw an improvement in the quality of sleep compared to the patients in ICU that were part of the control group (Shinde et al,

Massage therapy is used to treat Raynaud’s disease by treating the fascia tissue of the affected and surrounding areas (Walton 2007). Tension is provoked with chronic conditions or stress that causes the pliability of the fascia to diminish which causes restriction on the blood flow to the limbs. Any restriction in one area of the fascia can hinder blood flow in other regions. Waltons et al. (2007) used massage therapy in a six week study of a female patient with Raynaud’s disease. This study was done in the winter months when Raynaud’s disease effects are at their peak (Walton 2007). Data on daily habits was acquired for three weeks for post therapy comparison. The patient then received five, 45 minute massage therapy treatments for three weeks. The massages focused on the fascia in the arms, neck and back. Massage therapy was found to decrease duration of vasospasms and pain (Walton 2007).
Individuals who go through the process of becoming a chiropractor are dedicating their lives to improving others through their own hands. Giving a patient relief and satisfaction without harming their body with drugs that can have horrible side effects is a feeling that is unlike anything else. Facilitating an individual to heal and strengthen their entire life is what chiropractors strive for and many accomplish that ambition. Additionally, studies and surveys have shown why students of chiropractic choose this profession. The top reasons were that they truly want to help people and heal them, the increase in financial status, and the ambition of having the title “Doctor.”
This article has shown me that new strategies are needed to reduce sleep disturbances, improve sleep quality, and support the need for supplemental daytime sleep in hospitalized individuals. These strategies include monitoring patients’ sleep and assess quality of sleep and duration, resolving the problems of sleep disturbance, recognizing that nighttime noise, light, and other factors potentially interfere with patient sleep, minimize lighting in shared patient rooms and turn off lights earlier at night, frequently assess for pain and administer prescribed pain medications to minimize sleep disruption. This article taught me more about sleep cycles and disturbances in hospitalized patients. As a future nurse, I have to accurately assess the patients’ personal characteristics and health education needs, and share this knowledge with my classmates.

Touch is as essential to a healthy and happy life as eating right, getting proper sleep, and exercising. With the world growing more technological, the need for healthy human contact is more important than ever. Massage and body therapies are an age old healing refuge for us in this fast-paced, stressed-out world. The practice of massage therapy is rapidly growing in the United States. It has so much to offer and is becoming more widely accepted by doctors and the general public. Massage is touching another person by such movements as rubbing, kneading, pressing, rolling, slapping, and tapping. This type of therapy provides circulation of the blood and lymph, relaxation of muscles, relief from pain, restoration of metabolic balance, and many other benefits both physical and mental. There is much historical evidence to indicate that massage is one of the earliest remedies for pain relief and for the restoration of a healthy body. It is said to be the most natural and instinctive means of relieving pain and discomfort. Massage has proven to be an effective method for treating many conditions for thousands of years and it will continue to be used for thousands of years to come. Massage therapy is a great treatment for the body and soul.
Chronic lower back pain is a major health disorder in the world today (Mendelson, Selwood, Kranz, Loh, Kidson, Scott, 1983). It can cause many physical, mental, and emotional problems on the victim (Mendelson, Selwood, Kranz, Loh, Kidson, Scott, 1983). Many people find their work so unbearably painful that they often have to stay home. Others experience depression, inactivity, and social isolation (Kaplan, Sallis, Patterson). Treatments range from the conventional methods such as medication and surgery to the alternative or unconventional methods such as acupuncture. However, only a small percentage of low back pain patients have the type of condition for which surgery can be used so acupuncture is becoming more popular (Lehmann, Russell, Spratt, 1983).
People have created a hectic and busy world, that includes careers and daily activities that require physical activity. While attempting to attain the required physical conditioning, people often take chances with their personal health as they try to stretch their physical limits. Sometimes, people can surpass their current limits and form new boundaries; however, other times people are not so fortunate. These unfortunate times often lead to injury, including workplace accidents, sporting incidents, disease afflictions, as well as others; any or all of which could bring about the need of rehabilitation services. Many of these require physical therapy, which includes assisting injured or otherwise impaired patients as they recover to their pre-injury status or to recover as much as is physically possible. The field of physical therapy is a choice career for those who enjoy helping people recover from injury, and the following text will provide reason for choosing this profession.
The chiropractic profession is one of the largest and to present, the most commonly known profession to complement and take part in the so called mainstream and ‘alternative medicine’. (Meeker, WC et al. 2002.) With a relatively new founding of chiropractic, the profession has since been divided into a range of theories towards effective treatments, structure and function. These contradicting theories, between followers of the original ideology, and those of the evolved theory, have caused a major schism within the profession, which have further negatively impacted society’s view of the chiropractic profession as a whole. (Meeker, WC et al. 2002.)
What is massage therapy you might ask? The title for it explains almost the entire career. Massage therapist help their customers by using the manipulative skill of touching to relieve pain stress, and many other discomforting factors. As the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014) state, therapists help rehabilitate injuries, improve circulation, relieve stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the general wellness of clients. Therapists also soften issues of the body and knead muscles. They promote general wellness and provide treatment for injuries. Massage therapists may use lotions and oils and massage tables or chairs as Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014) writes. Massages can last as short as 5-10 minutes or even longer than an hour. These are
