Contrary to what most think, an “Arnold Palmer” is not just a blend of tea and lemonade. One day, all might be able to swing a golf club like Arnold Palmer. Golf has been around since the thirteenth century and was introduced by the Scottish and Dutch. The main goal of golf is to reach the hole in the fewest amount of shots possible. One main difference between golf and many other sports is the lower the score the better. Regardless of the fact that the game was once banned, golf is now enjoyed by many (“The History of Golf”). Despite the images in common golf commercials, the golf swing is endlessly complicated.
The legendary beginnings of golf in the United States can be traced back to the mid-1600s. One of the first published references to golf in America was in 1659 referring to the ban on golf in the streets of Albany, New York. The next substantial reference to the game comes from Charleston, North Carolina in 1786. At that time, a local Charleston newspaper ran a story about the formation of the Harleston Green Golf Club. The Harleston Green remained in operation for approximately twenty-five years, closing about the time of the War of 1812. Around the same time period, approximately1795, another golf club opened in Savannah, Georgia. References to this golf club continued until 1811 again apparently closing just before the beginning of the war. The War of 1812 served to destroy the desire to play golf. It wasn’t until the late 1870s, well after the Civil War ended, that there was a resurgence of golf in the United States.
... and, thus, laid the foundation for the sports of modern day. The types of competition have changed throughout the centuries, but not the physical and mental
There are many places around the world that claim the creation of golf, but there are no records of who actual created it. Golf has the records of first being placed in Scotland during the fourteenth century (Fossum 84). During the fourteenth century, Scotland could have been the creator but there are many little games that were like golf that were played. Scottish Shepard’s played the closest thing to golf that we know of, the Shepard’s hit pebbles into crude holes in the ground with their crooks (Fossum). This little game transformed into a game that everyone would want to play and love. “In 1440 golf’s popularity began to spread. King James IV of Scotland became alarmed when he discovered that some of the Scottish people were spending more time practicing golf than archery. It was during this period that bows and arrows were used in warfare” (Fossum 84). Eventually King James IV banned the game of golf in Scotland, until people found out that the king himself had been playing golf. This ban for golf would now be ignored (Fossum 84). Scotland and Holland both had some of the same ideas that came together to create the game but France had a little d...
Many variations of the game used to be played in the 18th Century. They were played in New York, Massachusetts, and Philadelphia, but the first ever baseball club was called the “knickerbockers baseball club” created by Alexander Joy Cartwright. Cartwright wanted to United States and eventually the world to know about his new past time so in 1849 he went to California (because of the gold rush) and taught some of the gold miners the game. Before Cartwright invented the rules and regulations along with the name “baseball” people played a game called “town ball” and “goal ball” which was very similar back in the 18th century. When baseball began to expand rapidly people started playing it more often and in 1958 the “Brooklyn Dodgers” was the first team added to the “Major League Baseball Association” or “MLB” for short (Fay 2+).
Through certain periods in history sports were very different then they are today and meant very
The globalization of golf is demonstrated by five different cities: Santiago, Chile; Beijing, China; Nairobi, Kenya; Awali, Bahrain; and Munich, Germany because they all contain golf culture diffused from Scotland even though they are situated in entirely different parts of the world; this particular example of globalization can also be described by the terms: place, region, scale, space, and connections. The origins of golf can be traced back to the 15th century, when a sport resembling golf was first played with a bent stick and a stuffed ball. It is widely accepted that the foundations of golf started in Scotland; one of the oldest and most honored golf clubs, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, is located in Scotland. At
Have you ever played a game or heard of flag football? Flag football originated from soccer and rugby, and is a version of American or Canadian football where the fundamental rules of the game are similar to those of the common sport. However, instead of actually tackling players to the ground like in the game of American football, flag football requires the defensive team to remove the flag which is dangling from the left and right side of the ball carrier’s body in order to end a down. This all began as President Theodore Roosevelt stepped in to bring order to the sport while before than it was all one game, played without protective equipment and with virtually no physical restraint. Today, flag football is a competitive game which has many
The sport of golf was created a long time ago but is not actually precisely dated for when the game was made. According to Jack Connelly, a retired teacher and golfer, reports that the game has been dated back to places like China and Scotland. There also is a wide year range for the time golf was created going all the way back to the 960’s to more exact years like 1457. The game of golf as we know it today was “born on May 14, 1754, when the Society of St. Andrews was founded by a group

People had been tossing Frisbees around for years, but had yet to create a sport using the Frisbee disk. At Columbia High School in New Jersey, students from the school newspaper created a new sport, combining different aspects of soccer, football, basketball, team handball, and hockey, they called it Ultimate Frisbee. These students decided to write an official set of rules for Ultimate Frisbee. At first, it was only played by a few students at Columbia. The sport soon caught on at other colleges and high schools in the area. From then on, Ultimate spread rapidly throughout the United States, and was at first played only in schools. Since then many non-scholastic leagues have formed and many countries have started national teams. Not much has changed since the rules were first published, and since then, Ultimate has spread all over the world.
Golf originated as just a ball and stick game played in parts of Europe. Golf dates back hundreds of years, even being played by Romans! Scotland does have the first recorded reference to golf when their king, King James II, issued a ban in 1457 on golf and football because they “kept his archers from their practice.” Even so, the game continued to be played by many. The sport itself was not born in Scotland, but grew up and became what it is today there. The USGA museum says, “While many Scots firmly maintain that golf evolved from a family of stick-and-ball games widely practiced throughout the British Isles during the Middle Ages, considerable evidence suggests that the game derived from stick-and-ball games that were played in France, Germany and the Low Countries."It officially
Golf as we know it in today’s generation originated from a game played on the eastern coast of Scotland in the Kingdom of Fife during the 15th century. Players would hit a pebble around a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive club. It’s believed that Kolven from Holland and Chole from Belgium influenced the game. The latter was introduced into Scotland in 1421. There can be no dispute that Scotland gave birth to golf.
Arguably one of the biggest changes to the sport of golf throughout its history is how the
Sports throughout history have shown close ties and relations to values and cultures of a society. Sports and competition have adapted and grown as the world and people have grown and developed. Sports are often seen as simple consequence of the industrial revolution. The Impact of increased urbanization, better communication and transportation, as well as more time and income for specialization, all led to the creation of sports. (szymanski). In essence As the public sphere grew so did the concept of sport. (Szymanski). Even the impact colonization had on spreading sports, shows the congruence between the development of society and development of modern sports. What make sports very unique is that they always bring about a sense of culture
