A group that I interact with on a regular basis is my group of friends at school, my teachers and my family members. My friends control my behavior because I am more informal with them than I am with anyone else. More socialization occurs with them around. We all always hang out, go to places, and meet new people. My friends and I enjoy doing these activities together. There are informal social control norms that are applied within this group. For example, we joke around all the time, but we can not be rude to one another for no reason when it is uncalled for. Being my friends for a long time, there is not formal social control. Even though we are all very comfortable around one another, everyone still has to conform to get along with one another. Whether it be where we are going to eat or what movie we are going to watch. Informal social control displays heavily within this group. If I do something bad I will be punished and have to face negative consequences. But if I do a good deed, then I am rewarded for my positive behavior. I believe teachers follow these norms because students learn best by being punished for unacceptable behavior. After being punished they learn not to repeat their mistakes over again. Being superior in authority I have to show the teachers the utmost respect. As well as, be extremely obedient and pay heed to them. Among friends both parties have to conform in order to build a relationship. But in a teacher to student relationship it is usually the student that has to do all the conforming. For example, college professors have a set syllabus that all students enrolled are required to follow. The professor does not care whether if you have to be up at two o'clock in the morning to finish your given assignments because they could not be done earlier due to your job. They do not find that their business to worry
