In the past, it was hard to stay connected to people who didn’t live near or close by to you. The only ways you met people were actually going out and physically meeting people or through friends and family. For some people it was hard to stay in touch with people if they moved away. In today’s world digital technology has changed the way we communicate through many different ways. Social media is one way that has changed the way everybody communicates. It is revolutionizing the way we communicate in a more efficient way through the workplace, our lives, and the way we connect and stay connected to one another. A study that was done in 2009, showed that 73 percent of all adults older than the age of 18 had Facebook profiles. (Percentage of adult users who maintain profiles on selected social networking sites, by age group, 2009.) This shows that most people in the world use Facebook on a daily basis. Facebook allows you to post statuses about how you feel, what you are doing, or even where you are. Users that are interested in those things may be your friends, family, or other users that find the same things interesting. Posting things to your wall can help you stay connected to the world, unless your profile is private, because it tells people what you are up to. Users that are interested in what you have to say will reply to your post. Replying to people’s post could potentially lead to another conversation that you guys would have in common, which then can lead to a new relationship.
Another way to meet people on Facebook is through instant messaging or IM. Instant messaging on Facebook is an exchange of texts, but in real time. It’s a direct message usually private between a person or a group that instantly goes to the person or people you want to read them. This helps you stay connected to people because it allows you to directly write someone without everybody seeing it. It’s a private way to share your thoughts, ideas, and feelings with one another.
