CAUSES OF INFANT MORTALITY case study

Infant mortality is the death of infants in their first year of life. There are many causes of infant mortality. Some predominant causes include congenital malformation, infection and SIDS, while infanticide, abuse, abandonment, and neglect may also be a factor of infant mortality. Infant mortality is measured by infant mortality rate, which is the number of newborns that die under one year old divided by the number of live births during a given year. Sometimes the infant mortality rate is also called the infant death rate. This infant mortality rate is reported by the number of live newborns dying under on year old per one thousand live births. This is done so different countries can compare their rates. I will be addressing two main topics for infant mortality rate: What is being done to prevent infant mortality? What are some current rates around the globe? These are the two topics I found most interesting to get more information on. What is being done to prevent infant mortality? Over the last fifty years there has been an incredible decrease in the infant mortality rate. The chance of a newborn baby dying before the age five is only a seven percent risk as of the year 2000. That's a huge jump, considering a ten percent chance in the 1950's. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has formatted a wide range of programs to help prevent infant mortality. Some programs designed to prevent the rate through access to prenatal information are Healthy Start, Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). There are also toll-free prenatal care hotline's and childhood immunization initiatives. The HHS also has programs to promote healthy choices to reduce mortality risks. Some of these include the folic acid campaign, the "back to sleep" campaign, reducing mother-to-child HIV transmission, Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant and by reducing teen pregnancy. What are some current rates around the globe? The entire globe, including both less developed countries and more developed countries, declined considerably between 1960 and 2001.In 1960 the global infant mortality rate was 198 per 1000 while in 2001 there were only 83 per 1000. Although the overall numbers are dropping, there is a difference in the less and more developed countries. Statistics say that less developed countries have about 17 times of the amount of infant mortality than the more developed countries do.
First, I will give out some statistics of infant mortality rates in America. According to an Amnesty International report, two maternal deaths occur every day for African-American women. Even though 99% of birth-related deaths happen in developing countries, these numbers for African American women in a country with world renowned health facilities are discouraging.

A new opportunity to reach spiritual perfection. Infant mortality is a difficult subject to talk about for many Tibetan parents. Survivors are often faced with poverty and other extreme hardships after the loss of a loved one. However, Buddhism provides great comfort to survivors by teaching that Earthly bodies are impermanent. Tibetan cremation procedures place great emphasis on reincarnation.
Two-thirds of infants die during the first month of life due to low birth weight (Lia-Hoagberg et al, 1990). One reason for this outcome is primarily due to difficulties in accessing prenatal care. Prenatal health care encompasses the health of women in both pre and post childbearing years and provides the support for a healthy lifestyle for the mother and fetus and/or infant. This form of care plays an important role in the prevention of poor birth outcomes, such as prematurity, low birth weight and infant mortality, where education, risk assessment, treatment of complications, and monitoring of fetus development are vital (McKenzie, Pinger,& Kotecki, 2012). Although every woman is recommended to receive prenatal health care, low-income and disadvantaged minority women do not seek care due to structural and individual barriers.
The cause or causes of SIDS are still unknown. Most researchers now believe that babies who die of SIDS are born with one or more conditions that make them vulnerable to both internal and external stresses that occur in the normal life of an infant. Most deaths from SIDS occur by the end of the sixth month with the greatest number taking place between two and four months of age. A SIDS death occurs quickly and is often associated with sleep, with no signs of suffering. More deaths are reported in the winter months and most victims are boys, with a sixty-to-forty percent male-to-female ratio.
In the Victorian Britain there was 88 minors were killed from the start of 1851 to the end of 1851 from many, many different things. I am talking about deaths in Victorian Britain and what I think the deaths mean is that the people who died, died cruelly. There may be some people who die of accidental deaths but most people die of a cruel death. The Victorians viewed death as a sad time because the deaths caused a great deal of sadness and pain to the person's family mates and friends.
Infant mortality is considered a worldwide indicator of a nation’s health status. The United States still ranks 24th in infant mortality compared with other industrialized nations, even though infant mortality has declined steadily over the past several decades. Compared with the national average in 1996 of 7.2 deaths per 1,000 live births, the largest disparity is among blacks with a death rate of 14.2 per 1,000 in 1996 which is almost 2½ times that of white infants (6 deaths per 1,000 in 1996). American Indians as a whole have an infant death rate of 9 deaths per 1,000 in 1995, but some Indian communities have an infant mortality rate almost twice that of the national rate. The same applies to the Hispanic community, whose rate of 7.6 deaths per 1,000 births in 1995 doesn’t reflect the Puerto Rican community, whose rate was 8.9 deaths per 1,000 births in 1995.
Healthy people 2020 states “The risk of maternal and infant mortality and pregnancy-related complications can be reduced by increasing access to quality preconception (before pregnancy) and interconception (between pregnancies) care. Moreover, healthy birth outcomes and early identification and treatment of health conditions among infants can prevent death or disability and enable children to reach their full potential.” (CITE HEALTHY PEOPLE) Objective maternal, infant, and child health (MICH)1.1 has the goal of “reducing the rate of fetal deaths of fetuses at 20 or greater weeks gestation”. Life expectancy in many parts of the world has increased since 1800 (Life Expectancy by Age, n.d). To understand these changes we can study the demographic transition, the changes in birth and death rates over extended periods of time. The industrial revolution has significantly improved the conditions of humans and in 20th century death rates declined but the birth rates remained unchanged. In many of today’s developed countries both rates have declined; however, in developing countries, while death rates have declined due the improvements of living conditions, the birth rates are still high which has caused a record high population growth (HAUB & GRIBBLE, 2011).

A major part of women’s health and children’s health is prenatal health. When you have a strong start, you can have a solid base to build upon your entire life. Therefore, one of the Healthy People 2020 main objectives are to diminish and eradicate early death among individuals. Therefore, prenatal health is a top priority to achieve. That is evident by having over forty objectives that are exclusively related to prenatal health of the mother and the fetus. These objectives are categorized under morbidity and mortality, pregnancy health and behaviors, preconception health and behaviors, postpartum health and behavior, infant care, disability and other impairments, and health services (Healthy People 2020,
Our children are our future and their health and welfare should be one of our top priorities. Research has confirmed what anyone with common sense already knows: Children, who are fed, do better than those who are hungry. Money spent for child care and education services pay off in the long run and are less likely to be spent on special education and the criminal justice system. There is evidence that hitting children, corporal punishment, which is now illegal in many countries, can contribute to behavioral problems, encourages children to act violently, and can even lower intelligence. We also know that people with insurance stay healthier than those without, and that healthy children do better than sick children (Leon Hoffman, 2011).

A program such as the one described can have a positive impact and has the potential of saving millions of lives.
