I heard the term "indie" bounced around a lot these days and I wonder what the definition of indie is. I think of it as a reference to a musician, small record label or film company without an affiliation with a major corporation. I read this article by Bob Baker, the author of "Branding Yourself Online: How to Use the Internet to Become a Celebrity or Expert in Your Field" and the "Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook." He defines I-N-D-I-E as:
I - Inspired
He said to embrace the indie frame of mind, you must be inspired. You have to know in your gut that music is what you are meant to do. You must become energized when writing, recording and performing your music. When this kind of natural inspiration comes over you, it's a sure sign that you're on the right path. And you will need this desire to carry you through the ups and downs of pursuing the independent music path.
N - Nontraditional
Indie musicians don't mind learning about what has come before, and they are happy to listen to the "rules" that others say are required to have a successful music career. However, the smartest indie artists keep their minds flexible and constantly ask questions about how the supposed "rules" of the past really apply to them. They actually develop a mindset that seeks out the road less traveled. And when they spot a good idea that's off the traditional path, they fearlessly go after it without apologies.
D - Determined
Successful indie artists are fixated on their goals and determined to reach them. They still leave room to veer from the original plan, when needed, but they are steadfast in their desire to produce more and better music, reach more fans, sell more CDs, etc. With this attitude, obstacles become short-term learning experiences along the road to higher levels of success.
I - Innovative
Being an indie means thinking outside of the proverbial box and looking at fresh opportunities from every angle. It means not promoting yourself the same way a thousand other acts have done it.
However, how a community goes about dealing with this issue is controversial. According to the Office of Justice Programs, Operation Ceasefire “seeks to reduce gang violence, illegal gun possession, and gun violence in communities.” Officials for Operation Ceasefire advocate for local law enforcement to vamp up patrols in areas where violent crime is common. However, this could be an unintended consequence for those who live in these areas that don’t engage in violence. Essentially, maybe individuals in the community will not like the increased police patrols and will retaliate in a deviant manner. Also, it is important to understand that not all individuals get “chosen” to be part of Operation Ceasefire. Maybe those who don’t pass the screening process to partake will act out. In other words, when they see their friends partaking in the intervention and doing well, those who don’t get chosen may respond in a deviant manner. These are just a few unintended consequences that may be expected when communities implement this
What has been great for the underground scene is its ability to sell more records now, and that is by and large due to the increase of smaller, independent record labels(see chapter 1). Labels such as Rawkus, Fondle ‘Em, Stones Throw, Goodvibe, ABB Records, and others can compete with majors like Bad Boy and Def Jam now because they are backed by people who have money and want to see hip-hop culture survive.
Some of who are being affected has no intellect that they are an illegal alien. The effects of the deportation system are unbelievable; children are left alone while there father and mother are torn from their homes. This is an emotional time for these children, considering they are too young to understand. "I didn’t know what to think. Just the thought of me going to back to a country I no longer known, and I have no real memory of… I just went through the moments (How to stop Deportation)." Deportation has been shown to cause families and someone's self, feelings of shame, and isolation. Immigrants live their lives in the United States with uncertainty, for on any given day they can be ripped out of their homes and sentenced to deportation with no legal representation. Their families will not be able to be reached and that causes insecurities. Living day by day with the unknown is very stressful and can take its toll on self-esteem and self-worth. The deportation system not only affects the families and friends of immigrants it also affects the economy; Because there is so much money spent on ICE and border control along with court and the deportation itself. That money can be used for education, livestock, crops, government assistance programs; The list goes on. “More than 46,000 parents of U.S. citizen children were deported in as little as 6 months in
In conclusion I feel authenticity in rock music has a huge part to play and although it is a very snobby culture of "we will like you until we've had enough" its still personal to every person and they have a choice to decide who fits into their perfect music world.
... person what is going to happen with the family, being deported changes not just the life of the person being detained but the lives of the family as well. “The participants shared their thoughts and beliefs regarding the immigrants they work with, and emphasized the devastating consequences of deportation. The most compelling description of thedeportation experience was offered by the Community Leader:“el sueñoAmericano se convierte en una pesadilla” [the American dream becomes a nightmare]. He explained that when a member of the family is deported [“every aspect of life is affected”].”(Lopez, Anna, Boie, Loana p.44). The way that deportation and immigration harms the family is really unfortunate and it is not something that people want to go through because when a member of a family is lost it sends that family into a endless spiral of thoughts, fears and anxiety.
Chicago should continue to fund ceasefire and they should also expand to other places. Where they are affected as much or more than Chicago for example Detroit. There must be more people like that want to get out of the gang life, but just need a direction to be pointed at to start. Even artist that have been in the gang life might help fund the project or even help in the group. They are making a difference because people in the hood don’t respect the police as much as ceasefire people. At least they listen to them, they may not trust the police as much because of all the news in the
Child abuse, while having many different forms and levels of severity, can be basically defined as the maltreatment of a child by a parent or other adult. When one thinks of child abuse, usually the first thing that comes to mind is physical harm, but the issue is actually much more complex. The abuse of a child can also be manifested in verbal and emotional forms, as well as in sexual molestation. All forms of child abuse generally result in similar emotional disorders and behavioral issues, but the major consequences of sexual abuse, such as mental or emotional scarring, promiscuity, and the tendency of former victims to become sexual abusers, cause it to be the most severely damaging form of child abuse.
Accounting profit can serve as an alternative to intrinsic value. But Buffett states that “...we do not measure the economic significance or performance of Berkshire by its size; we measure by per-share progress.” Accounting reality was conservative, backward looking, and governed by GAAP (measures in terms of net profit), therefore Buffett rejects this alternative. According to the world’s most famous investor, investment decisions should be based on economic reality, not on accounting
Perhaps the greatest association of alternative rock is the underground music scene, which can be described as an ideological concept where commercialization and legal contracts are non-existent, and mainstream coverage is severely lacking if present. Simply performing somewhere low key with these traits can label the performers as underground music artists. Groups that were truly categorized as alternative rock began performing in the scene at these low key venues and any fame and popularity gained generally stayed within the underground music scene. Popular acts could inevitably receive outside media coverage and be approached by companies in the music industry with a legally binding contract, but does that break their categorization as an alternative rock group? Or does the simple humble beginnings in the underground music scene fulfill that criteria of definition?
In life, there are many crimes people can commit, but one of the worst ones is child molestation. It is seen as one of the worst crimes even to murders and psychopaths in prisons. World Childhood Foundation has created an unsettling image to show the public what these monsters see and what a gruesome crime it is. Childhood is meant to fun and full of encouragement, but when a child is molested it scares them for life.
In his article “How Indie Labels Changed the World”, Richard King focuses on one of the most notable artists to sign to an indie label, The Smiths. Formed by Steven Morrissey and Johnny Marr in 1982, The Smiths had arranged from their inception to sign with an independent record label, with Rough Trade being their ideal preference (King). This was more than a business decision as it was also one of personal identity for the group, as Marr expresses, "The very act of being on Rough Trade at the time was a statement in itself. It cut across our whole aesthetic." Like artists who embraced the D.I.Y. ethos before them, The Smiths did not want to appear grandiose or elite but rather to present themselves as realistic models for independent music production, inspiring the likeminded to take a shot at breaking into the music industry. When The Smiths eventually grew to a popularity better fitting the support of a major label, they began meeting with record companies and considering new deals. But Marr
Accomplishing your goals is a proof you are being successful. This is because you are getting everything you wished and worked really hard to get it. Canadian singer Shawn Mendes is a bright example of this, he is at his 18 years old, and is getting everything a singer ever wanted.
What has the power to make you get up and move, to both inspire you and enrage you? Rock, rap, “pop”, country, and blues are all forms of this phenomenon we call music. Music has been a part of each and everyone of our lives. How often have you heard a song and it brought you back to a place in your past, or reminded you of someone? Chances are you were listening to music that fell into one of the two most popular categories, rock or pop. Both rock and pop can be considered movements in society, however the motivation for these movements were on the opposite ends of the spectrum. Also another thing that they have in common is that once the artists are famous the may both have a tendency to fall off the deep end. This may entail spending thousands of dollars on drugs and alcohol. Eventually many of both pop and rock stars end up in rehab. Even though the lines between rock and pop can be blurred at times there are many distinct differences.
Avant-garde mainly refers to a movement of artists and thinkers that oppose mainstream cultural values. This usually leads to an instantaneous rejection by the majority of society and a possible late recognition. It brings new ideas that society find hard to absorb. As described in his article “the Avant-garde, rarely love at first sight,” New York Times reporter, Margo Jefferson, new taste is rejected at first: “It may be that the viewer is a philistine or the critic a fraud. But it also may be that the brush with an unfamiliar theatrical form was too brief and too unexpected. Experimental theater, after all, is an acquired taste - like aged cheese or raw fish. It is an experience that needs some effort, some study and some time.” (Jefferson)
Children represent all that is innocent, pure and true in this world. They bring optimism to our lives, and are a symbol of mankind’s hope and redemption. Unfortunately, there are numerous cases of crimes against children. People perform the most unthinkable acts, which often result in a permanent, lifelong scar on the psyche of the victimized children. In doing so, these criminal minded people are destroying a whole family. These scarred children often grow up to be confused and scared citizens of the world and are unable to contribute positively towards life, unless they find help early on in their lives to get out of the trauma created by the violent acts performed against them.
