Music is a very integral part of India and is closely linked with spirituality. India has a rich and varied cultural heritage and boasts of a civilization more than 2000 years old. Indian music is one of the oldest music traditions and heritages in the world. Known as ‘Sangeet’, Indian music is unique and has a varied style. It is a combination of three art forms-Vocal music (Gayana), Instrumental music (Vadana) and Dance (Nritya) , based on two important aspects- Melody (Raga) and Rhythm (Taala). Indian classical music has also been significantly influenced by Indian folk music. Bharat's Natyashastra was the first treatise laying down fundamental principles of dance, music, and drama (Sambamoorthy.1973)
Origin
The Pre-Vedic period
Earlier, prior to the treatises on Music and Dance, Indian music was purely devotional and spiritual,being restricted to temples and rituals. Sound or ‘pranava’ was synonymous with divinity and was thought to pervade the whole universe, called ‘Naada-brahma’
