Abstract: There has been a longstanding debate over the effectiveness of correlational institutions. Some argue that incarceration change offenders while others argue that being incarcerated causes people to continue committing crimes. Resolving this issue is mostly important for young individuals because they are more likely to commit crimes than older folks. Using PubMed and ProQuest, I looked at studies that relate to the topic discussed above that have been conducted in the United States and around the world. This paper focuses on how incarceration affects people and how to reduce it. Keywords such “how to reduce incarceration”, “effectiveness of incarceration” were used to find articles that were directly related to the topic. Prospective This study was looking at how sexual behaviors of men who have been incarcerated change after being released from jail and the implication for HIV and STD risks. They used computational modeling to test whether rates of male incarceration could explain differences in patterns of sexual behavior between communities with high rates of incarceration and those without. They used sexual partnership among 20-25 year old urban residents and uses algorithm that incarcerates male agents and then release them back into the community. The results suggested that incarceration can cause an increase in the number of sexual partners at the community Clear et al (2003) collected community-level data regarding prison admission rates, release rates and crime rates for several neighborhoods. The results showed coercive mobility in poor communities with large minority groups and communities with extremely high coercive mobility had higher crime rates (Clear, et al 2003). They also looked at employment and reentry into the community. Results showed that employment is associated with lower crime rates and higher wages are associated with lower criminal activities. But prisoners face many challenges in finding a job because most of them have low level of education or limited work experience. Also, employers don’t often hire former prisoners. Transportation is also another challenge they face. Most released prisoners don’t have a car or access to public transportation due to not having money or social support. Results: All of the articles I researched concluded that incarceration does little or nothing to help with criminal offender’s reentry into the community. It often does more bad than good to them and make them more aggressive and violent than they were before. Conclusion: My research concluded that incarceration is not the solution that we need in order to help criminal offenders gain back entry into their communities. The solution is to lay out strategies that focus on rehabilitation and re-engagement in prosocial activities. Give
