Books should be banned because Some books have Inappropriate language for children. Some books could be fine for an Adult but then to a child it could be inappropriate.Also many books include words or behavior that might be something a child shouldn’t be reading. There are multiple reasons why a book can be banned or challenged. Book banning causes the removal of materials in schools and libraries due to “inappropriate” content. The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold, was banned due to sexual content and language.
The American Library Association, ALA, is an organization that, among other things, compiles a list every year of the most frequently challenged books. “The American Library Association actively defends the right of library users to read, seek information, and speak freely as guaranteed by the First Amendment.” (ALA) Many times, the books on this list are challenged by parents with the want to protect their children from things they don’t believe to be appropriate. “Only parents have the right and responsibility to restrict the access of their children” (ALA) Even with these good intentions, by challenging a book, they are trying to challenge the authors’ thoughts and words, their First Amendment rights. These books usually contain complicated ideas, issues, and information that cause parents to not want them where their kids can read them. The novel My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult is a challenged book because of its homosexuality, offensive language, religious viewpoint, sexism, sexually explicit scenes, violence, and being unsuited to its age group; by all means this novel should not be challenged because, it’s use of offensive language is only used to intensify certain situations, and through all of the controversial issues it employs, it puts in perspective just how far someone would go for his/her family.
In order to understand how banning books in schools affect student learning, it is important to understand why books are banned in the first place. If parents describe a book as inappropriate or offensive for children, they can complain about it to the school district to have it banned. If the school district agrees with the parents, they will ban the book from the school curriculum and forbid teachers from teaching the book to students. People ban or challenge books because they don't want other to read them because of their content, even thought we see most of it in our everyday life. To stop book banning and to keep books on the shelves; if a book has inappropriate content and someone wants to buy it or get it from the library or store they have to get the parents consent. However, some adults think a few lines are hard to swallow. For example, Sophie, like any young woman, is starting to notice a change in the size of her breasts and decides to share some of her observations, “Sometimes on chilly nights I stand close to my bedroom window, unbutton my nightgown, and press my breasts against the cold glass just so I can see the amazing trick that my nipples can do” (Sones 46). This, along with a slight groping scene during her daydream, can be seen as inappropriate by concerned parents. Of course these adult situations are not the most comfortable thing to talk about, it is a natural body part that every young, female teen is getting used to at that time and it is more important to show young people that being curious about your body is okay because, “...some girls feel embarrassed…” (“How to Talk”). Young females should be encouraged to speak freely about their bodies if they do not understand something. Another example deals with a much darker scenario that most definitely should be talked about to teens, online predators. When Sophie was chatting with the guy that she had never met online, he started a conversation about what each person enjoys doing with their spare time. His response was, “I like to jerk off in libraries” (Sones 110). Sophie of course felt uncomfortable and blocked him immediately. Since the main character dealt with this issue
Banning books from public schools and public libraries is wrong. It’s irrational to have a parent or school board member’s opinion determine what a school district should be reading. Books including and not limited to, The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Lord of the Flies, and Animal Farm all have one thing in common. They have all at one time or another been subject to banishment. These literary classics have been around for a long time and proved to be vital to the education of many, especially children and adolescents. These novels teach values and educate children about world affairs that can not come from an everyday experience. When a book is banned, reasoning should be backed up with many facts and teachers should be able to agree or disagree. Teachers are the ones who have graduated from colleges and have earned this right. Though the opinions of parents matter, their opinion does not necessarily take into account all that the book has to give. Parents may not see the potential of the book as a whole. They may just see the racist language or cruel behavior in a book. What their opinions are mostly based on is the information that will keep everyone the most comfortable instead of the importance behind the basics for students to learn (Hills). Some books may include opposing ideas like this, but that does not mean that they do not have something to teach us. Many teachers take it on themselves to determine what is appropriate. They take on a certain level of self-imposed censorship to make sure that they are teaching appropriate material. Book banning in the United States and anywhere else in the world I feel should be abolished. Books are published and written for a reason. The reason is to expand the mind to new things. Sure some books are better than others but there is no reason to challenge or ban books.
Rape Fantasies by Margaret Atwood "Rape Fantasies" was written by Margaret Atwood in 1977. Basically, this short story is about the narrator, named Estelle, recalling a conversation between several women during their lunch hour. It starts with one of Estelle's co-workers, asking the question 'How about it, girls, do you have rape fantasies? Censorship in School Libraries The most debatable and controversial form of censorship today is the banning of books in school libraries. Banning books that educate students is wrong and selfish. Censorship of books in school libraries is neither uncommon nor an issue of the past. When I was teaching middle school, I heard some of my students calling one of my GLBTQ students a “fagot” and “queer” among other derogatory labels several times. However, when I heard those words, I intervened promptly. I told those students that type of language was not tolerated in my classroom and in our school and dealt with those students accordingly.
