In a world where women are looked upon as useless and are discriminated against, Julia Alvarez's novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, unravels and explores the struggle for gender equality and power. In the Dominican Republic under Trujillo's regime, women are granted very little rights, and work behind the scenes to challenge these traditional norms. The novel uncovers the Mirabal sisters' cautiousness to the stereotypes that blind the majority, and as the story progresses they begin to emerge from these domestic roles. Julia Avlverez adventures into the deep themes of the text and explores the dynamics between male and female characters, and how they are portrayed. By openly questioning Trujillo's authority, despite the risks, she explores her true determination to pursue her law degree, and reflects her fight and desire for justice, while being under pressure to portray a “traditional” woman in the Dominican Republic. While Trujilo constantly is objectifying women, throughout the text Julia Alzerez reveals the power struggles between men and women, through a woman's perspective. She studies the constant force put upon women, to be accepted in this world, and makes the socially constructed roles of sex very clear. In the Dominican Republic, women are expected to play the role of a housewife, and are very much limited. However, as the story progresses, the sisters begin to break away from these stereotypes.
