In the article “Conditions of Trade,” Michael Baxandall explains that fifteenth-century Italian art is a “deposit” resulting from the commercial interaction between the artist and the purchaser, who he refers to as a client. These works, as such, are “fossils of economic life,” and money, and they play an important role in the history of art. In our current perception of the relationship between the artist and art, “painters paint what they think is best, and then look around for a buyer” . However in the past, especially during the Renaissance period, the customers determined the content and form of paintings, as it was them who commissioned the work before it was created. He states that the artists and clients were interconnected and a legal agreement was drawn up specifying subject matter, payment scheme and the quality and quantity of colors, which would influence the artist’s painting style. Through their similar use of line, movement, space, and color, they have created paintings that has been and will be seen by countless viewers. However, it is their contrasting use of value, emphasis, balance, and shape that have made their artwork different from one another, yet beautiful in their own way. It delivers a message to be different instead of going with the flow so that one day you, too, could be as successful as these painters.
In conclusion of this research paper I believed I have gained a new and better appreciation of renaissance art. Although other artists know who he is, Banksy doesn’t have a public face that he shows at galleries and in his documentaries. In Will Ellsworth-Jones article “The Story Behind Banksy: on his way to becoming an international icon, the subversive and secretive street artist turned the art world upside-down” he talks about one of Banksy’s earlier galleries. Ellsworth-Jones says “The show was a high-profile demonstration of the phenomenon that has come to be known as the ‘Banksy effect’—the artist’s astounding success in bringing urban, outsider art into the cultural, and increasingly profitable, mainstream” (2). Banksy’s “effect” is altering urban culture and bringing it to art galleries to be displayed and sold. In the grand scheme of things, he is commodifying graffiti and urban culture, making it more consumable and then proceeding selling and profit off of it. In A&E’s biography page for Banksy they state that Banksy’s work is unique due to the fact that it “often engages political themes, satirically critiquing war, capitalism, hypocrisy and greed.” The uniqueness of his work is a common reason different news outlets give for Banksy’s success. Michelangelo, born in Caprese, Italy on March 6, 1475, was a talented and very well known artist. He is one of the most famous artists during the Renaissance period and was known to be a painter, sculptor, architect, and poet. When Michelangelo was young he became an apprentice to a painter and later studied in the sculpture gardens with the Medici family. Through these experiences he started his career of becoming a successful and world known artist. Two statues that Michelangelo are most famous for are “David” and “Pieta.” He completed numerous ceiling paintings in Rome’s Sistine Chapel, one being the “Last Judgement.” Throughout his life he lived in Rome where he died at age eighty-eight, but he still considered himself a Florentine.
This art, like most, can be applied to the viewer in any way they wish. A person may look at one of the sculptures and see themselves. They may see a man who is going through challenges similar to their own; someone who is trying to free himself from these bounds. Within this essay, I will be referencing the works of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso in relation to Paul Cezanne’s work to see how they were both inspired by and created their own offerings in their works. The specific artwork that I will be comparing will be Matisse’s “Bonheur de Vivre (Joy of Life)”, Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” and Cezanne’s “The Large Bathers” which can all be found through the references provided.
