Dear Truman Capote,
I am a junior in highschool and have just completed your amazing and suspenseful masterpiece, In Cold Blood. The name itself speaks volumes to how thrilling this book was to read. I am writing to you today about the controversial topic of banned books and whether it was justifiable for this book to be banned. This book was one of 737 books to be banned for violence. In Cold Blood should not have been banned because it provides an excellent source of great literature and controversial politics.
According to Huffington Post, one of the biggest reasons books are banned is because it is unsuited for the age group. In Cold Blood is suitable for students because they should be learning about literature

and what makes good plot and character development, which prevails throughout your book. To start off, the beginning really builds up suspense and makes the reader want to stop the inevitable: the murder of the Clutter family. We are able to see the viewpoint of Perry and Dick, the two relentless murderers, and the victims who are soon going to be tied and shot. You also show the killers arrive but do not show the actual murder of the family. Also, this added to the plot because for the entire book, the reader is left questioning how everything truly happened. What also makes this a masterpiece is the progression of characters. The readers learn mostly about Perry and his hardships as a child. As the book goes on, I felt more and more sympathetic towards Perry even though he committed such a heinous crime. “[Dewey] found it possible to look at the man beside him without anger—with, rather, a measure of sympathy—for Perry Smith’s life had been no bed of roses but pitiful, an ugly and lonely progress toward one mirage or another”(Capote 245). This quote shows the progression of Dewey’s character too, who has spent so long and hard catching these guys, only to look at them with sympathy. The other aspect to why this book should not have been banned are the political innuendos that occur in this book.
First off, you did an amazing job of incorporating the infamous death penalty and the controversy behind it. When Perry and Dick are on trial for the murder of the Clutter family, Perry must write an autobiography for the psychologists that is called in. Him writing about the traumatic parts of his life, including how he was sent to an orphanage although having two alive parents, hints that Perry just might have some type of mental diagnosis. The Kansas' M'Naghten Rule basically is where the court determines if the criminal could not tell right from wrong due to being mentally insane. When the court called for the psychologists to determine if he could not tell right from wrong, he says he does not know, and the court assumes that he is not mentally insane. What is really interesting is how you included what the psychologist would have said, which is that Perry might be a paranoid schizophrenic. The psychologists says that “when [Perry] attacked Mr. Clutter he was under a mental eclipse, deep inside a schizophrenic darkness”(Capote 302).This cleverly shows what is wrong with the M’Naghten Rule and why it is not fair. Also, it leaves readers in controversy as to whether or not Perry was actually mentally insane throughout the book because the psychologists was very unsure. This is another reason why the book should not have been banned. In Cold Blood gave readers a chance to formulate an opinion on a situation like this one and keeps the students thinking. Although “opponents say teens are already overexposed to violence via video games, television and movie”(O’Neil), free thinking in this book overcomes the whole obstacle of
violence. All in all, In Cold Blood should not have been banned because it gives students a chance to read amazing literature and formulate opinions on political controversy. Students can think more freely and the positives overcome the negatives of reading the book. In Cold is 53rd rank on Library Assn. list of classic books, so what sense does it make to be banned? Thank you for reading my letter and I hope you agree with me. From, Juned
Have you ever read a book or an article in a magazine that you wouldn’t want your children to read? “A banned book is one that has been censored by an authority—a government, a library, or a school system. A book that has been banned is actually removed from a library or school system.” (Brogan Brunner)Some reasons people want books to be banned is because they have profanity, racism, murder, and sexism. Some reasons people don’t want books to be banned is because of the first amendment which is freedom of press and speech. They also think people should be able to read what they want. Some issues in Of Mice and Men are it has racial slurs and racism. It has a lot of profanity which some people don’t like to read and murder with euthanasia. Overall of mice and men should be banned from the schools.
In Cold Blood addresses a variety of issues including questions of whether a person's upbringing plays a role in criminal activity, and whether the death penalty is right or wrong. It also deals with issues such as prejudice and religion. I feel as if the disposition of the case was fair, but I also feel bad for them.
In Cold Blood truly is a masterpiece. The resulting chronicle-agonizing, terrible, possessed proof that the times, so surfeited with disasters, are still capable of tragedy (Knickerbocker 85-86). Today, it’s hard to imagine what journalism was like before Capote and the others started looking closely at “ordinary” people, before beginning to make an effort to. Even though In Cold Blood contained sex, violence, and profanity we see it all the time, it happens everywhere. There is no way to get away from these kinds of things, this book should not be banned just because of these certain reasons, because it actually tells a true story, and can show that people can get through traumatic experiences.
The novel the outsiders should be banned because it has violence things that happens in the novel. “But dally, heaters kill people’’,kill em with switchblades to, dontcha?” This quote states that the characters in the book are really dangerous. All this violence should not be told to kids, teens.
People ban books for dumb reasons that make absolutely no sense. Another is dumb religious reasons. Ministers and educators challenged it (it being the wonderful wizard of oz) for its “ungodly” influence and for depicting women in strong leadership roles They banned the wizard of oz because it showed girls in a leadership role (what?).This is really important because they are banning a classic book because the princess was a thing that people got really people got upset with it. “Others accuse the novel of attacks on religion, the disabled and women.” Lord of the flies (“http://www.banned-books.org.uk/sections/corrosive”). Once again PC police have come again to shut down another book that is actually pretty good. Also once again imagination is not encouraged. Don’t ban books for religious reasons that are not valid. Finally racism (that is not racism). “"A review of the book in question shows it to include pervasive vulgarity and racially insensitive language,"(The Hate you Give) Hindt said.” The story is about the struggles of a black girl in a racist environment (wouldn’t this be considered anti-racist). They can basically just ban whatever book they want. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark
In Truman Capote’s famous non-fiction novel, In Cold Blood, there is evidence that supports the injustices of the trial: the death penalty. The final outcome of the trial was never to be any different than death. “Of all the people in all the world, the Clutters were the least likely to be murdered” (Capote 85). We know the two men who killed the Clutter family, Perry Smith and Bill Hickock, preplanned the crime with malice and forethought. Although the actions were cruel and gruesome, does Death Row fit what they did if their pasts, childhood environments and situation, are bad?
...ves to be on the banned books list because of its level of violence. One that wants this book off the banned books list could say that violence is everywhere, why should one book be banned for showing something that is everywhere in todays society. I think this book shows a good concept of war. It could open ones mind to the idea of war and how one is forced to fight for themself and even their country. In the book they fight for themself and their district but relating it to the readers life he or she can think of it as fighting for themselves and their country. Which I believe is a good concept for young teenagers to be exposed to. I think this book should be off the banned books list because there are many reasons The Hunger Games can be considered a “good” book, it portrays many good themes throughout the novel and it can be translated into modern day war.
Freedom of expression is not limited to adults, minors too, have the right to freely express themselves and receive information. Therefore, minors have the right to read any materials they desire. By banning The Catcher In the Rye, and novels of the like, the rights of U.S. citizens are restricted. & nbsp; The novel, The Catcher In the Rye, should not be banned from inclusion in the literature courses taught at the high school level.
Books are free like the birds with open wings, that will see light and dark. The one thing everyone should know is you can’t cage a free bird. In the school direct there has been a lot of books banned from examples of To Kill a Mockingbird to Where the Wild Things Are. Our schools should have the freedom to pick and choice want is read but shouldn’t the students get a say. With the long process of getting a book banned, why shouldn’t we make sure the students get a say. I have three reasons why The Call of The Wild shouldn’t be banned. Tho your opinion is different I would like to hear me out on this. My three logical reasons are that there is a good message,it’s great for school debates, and the journey the Buck goes on.
I personally believe that the story, To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned in schools, and the story should be allowed in students’ curriculum. The first reason to why I believe this to be true would be the fact that it allows students the opportunity to learn about human mistakes and how to be better people in the future. A second reason would be that students are able to learn important parts of our history within the book. It also teaches students important morals that may be hard to teach without the context of a book such as this one.
There are many reasons that violence is one of the reasons that the book has been banned. “He determined to strand me outside district 12 until he can apprehend to arrest me? Drag me to the square to be locked in a stockade or whipped or hanged?” (Collins 151). This isn’t really a strong bloody gory violence that would cause a student to get sick in class it’s a basic violence that you would see in any other book that involves killing and fighting. And by exposing this type of violence to children it will raise their maturity level and have the children comprehend that there is violence around them in the world and they’re going to have to learn to deal with it. 56% of the book is challenged by parents and only 13% by libraries. This tells the reader that parents have a more difficult time with the book so you ask yourself is it more of the parents why they see the book? Or is it their child’s way they see the book? both child and parents are going to see the book differently so children may like the violence in the book but the parents may say th...
It was censored in many states because of the inappropriate behaviors in the book. The public schools and libraries wanted to deter the teenagers from trying drugs and to act upon sexual activities. In 1974, Michigan schools removed the novel because of the language and sexual content. It was unsuitable for students under the age, and for students whose parents weren’t okay with the vocabulary and plot of this novel. Underage individuals could participate in the acts presented in the novel, and could cause serious harm to others. It was censored to prevent the repetition of the plot of the story.
I am a student at Soledad High School and I am writing about the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. This book should not be prohibited because of its use of foul language, violence and racism.
When a book is banned, reasoning should be backed up with many facts and teachers should be able to agree or disagree. Teachers are the ones who have graduated from colleges and have earned this right. Though the opinions of parents matter, their opinion does not necessarily take into account all that the book has to give. Parents may not see the potential of the book as a whole. They may just see the racist language or cruel behavior in a book. What their opinions are mostly based on is the information that will keep everyone the most comfortable instead of the importance behind the basics for students to learn (Hills). Some books may include opposing ideas like this, but that does not mean that they do not have something to teach us. Many teachers take it on themselves to determine what is appropriate. They take on a certain level of self-imposed censorship to make sure that they are teaching appropriate material. Along with this, books being bought with school funds have to go through a process of approval (Zimmerman). This should eliminate any problem areas that parents may have. Besides just having the school board approving the books, many teachers have the same basic outline of what a book should include and be like. They ag...
